The dim evening sun hung low on the horizon, casting a twilight glow through the thin clouds. As the tide rose, the encroaching seawater submerged the base of the rocks.
The afterglow illuminated Siren's pale face, casting a shadow from his prominent nose in profile. The dull sheen of his scales clearly indicated his poor condition; his lips, once a lovely light rose color, had turned pale and cracked, while his doe-like clear eyes shone with a desperate longing.
Gu Yan stood with his back to the light, the sunlight from the coast blocked by his tall figure, leaving his features obscured in shadow, making it impossible to discern his emotions.
Siren, utterly defenseless, displayed a fragile beauty. His brilliant golden hair lay tousled across the beach. His lips parted slightly as if silently uttering a word or perhaps a meaningless sigh, barely audible. Upon seeing Gu Yan, it seemed he had exhausted all his strength; his gaze flickered a few times before he could no longer bear the weight of his eyelids and closed them.
The sleeping Siren lay sprawled on the soft sand. Gu Yan took a step forward, disregarding the damp sand that stained his trousers. He bent down and knelt on one knee, casting a shadow over Siren's peaceful face that shielded it from the radiant light.
He wrapped one arm around Siren's slender neck, resting Siren's head in the crook of his arm. With his other hand, he carefully encircled Siren's waist, avoiding the ghastly wounds, lifting the fish tail gently. In this position, he cradled Siren horizontally and stood up, his figure growing taller against the beach backdrop.
He gazed thoughtfully at that enchanting face, lowered his head, and reverently placed a kiss on Siren's forehead. His cool lips lightly brushed against the smooth skin, filled with suppressed ecstasy.
Along the coastline, Gu Yan's footprints were washed away by the rising tide, becoming faint and perhaps soon to vanish completely. However, this was of little concern. At this rocky spot, those interrupted footprints would not reappear because Gu Yan had finally obtained what he desired.
On this yellowing evening, Gu Yan truly touched his deity.
That Midsummer Midnight when he was fifteen—the unbearable heat, the vast deep blue sea—those distant memories overlapped with the present: the same ocean, the same temperature, and the same protagonist. It seemed as if their roles had reversed; Siren in Gu Yan's arms had lost agency and was weak and vulnerable, having fallen from divine grace to be confined by him.
Gu Yan carried Siren toward a nearby villa.
Their shadows stretched long under the sunset as they nestled close together, appearing intimately connected.
The large house was empty; its minimalist modern decor exuded an air of luxury. Gu Yan walked straight to the bedroom; its cold design made the room feel somewhat dim. The curtains of the floor-to-ceiling windows were tightly drawn, heavy fabric blocking any sunlight from entering.
In the center of the room was a soft king-sized bed. Strangely enough, there were no walls separating the bedroom; it was an open design with an unusually large bathroom enclosed by transparent glass walls featuring a massive bathtub inside. The bathroom extended right up to the bedside, separated only by that layer of glass which allowed one to clearly see everything happening in the bathtub from bed.
The villa had three floors: the first floor housed living facilities like a living room and kitchen; the second floor contained bedrooms; and on the top floor was an outdoor swimming pool along with a small garden. All living essentials were prepared for two people as if anticipating another resident’s delayed arrival.
This seemingly unexpected reunion after ten years might be an inevitable result—a long-planned outcome.
Gu Yan gently placed Siren into the filled bathtub and leaned down close to unconscious Siren's ear, lowering his voice to exhale warm breath.
"My little prince," Gu Yan paused for a moment, "I finally."
"Got you."
Gu Yan could be considered somewhat Sickly Sweet; Siren’s injury was related to him as he had prepared everything waiting for Siren to take the bait. But it turned out that it was voluntary baiting and another scheme altogether. Wait a minute—why is dating so exhausting? It's like fighting a battle!
