The door to the banquet hall slowly opened, and a hunched figure appeared, standing out starkly in the dim light. He leaned on an ancient cane, shuffling his way inside, draped in a faded black long robe that seemed completely out of place in this luxurious setting.
I was somewhat surprised and was about to step forward to inquire when Mr. Du suddenly stood up, his face filled with disbelief. "You... you came?" His voice trembled slightly as he hurried over to assist the old man to the main table.
The guests exchanged glances and whispered among themselves, speculating about the identity of this elderly man. I had never seen Mr. Du treat anyone with such respect; it was clear that this old man was not an ordinary person.
The old man slowly sat down, his murky eyes scanning the room before finally resting on me and Du Ming. "You are Lingxi and Du Ming, right?" His voice was deep and hoarse, carrying an imposing presence without any anger.
Du Ming frowned slightly, clearly displeased by the old man's abruptness, but he still nodded politely. "Sir, may I ask who you are?"
The old man did not answer Du Ming's question but instead spoke for himself: "I heard that you wish to seek immortality and enlightenment?"
His words struck like thunder in the banquet hall, leaving both Du Ming and me stunned. We had never revealed this thought to anyone; how did he know?
The old man seemed to see through our thoughts, a meaningful smile curling at the corners of his mouth. "No need to be surprised. I have come here to tell you that deep within the Kunlun Mountains, there indeed exists a book that can grant immortality, called the Taixuan Classic..."
His words were like a stone thrown into a calm lake, stirring up waves of excitement. Du Ming and I exchanged glances, seeing disbelief and a hint of... desire reflected in each other's eyes. Immortality was a dream sought after by many; now this opportunity seemed to be right before us.
"Sir, is what you say true? Does the Taixuan Classic really exist?" I couldn't help but ask, my tone tinged with urgency.
The old man stroked his white beard thoughtfully and said meaningfully, "In this world, truth and falsehood intertwine; if you believe it exists, it does; if you do not believe, it does not. I am merely sharing what I know; how you choose is entirely up to you."
That night, Du Ming and I were restless. The old man's words echoed in our ears like seeds planted in our hearts, igniting thoughts of cultivation. Although Du Ming appeared calm on the surface, I knew a storm was brewing within him.
"Lingxi, what do you think?" Du Ming's deep eyes sparkled with complex emotions in the darkness.
I took a deep breath and said firmly, "I want to give it a try. Even if we don't find the Taixuan Classic, it will still be an adventure worth taking."
Du Ming took my hand and smiled gently. "Alright, we'll go together. No matter what lies ahead, I'll be by your side."
We began preparing for this adventure. I rummaged through my grandfather's Medical Book, hoping to find some records about cultivation while Du Ming used his connections to gather information about the Kunlun Mountains.
"Lingxi, look at this." Du Ming held up an ancient book and pointed to a page. "It mentions a practice called 'Tuna,' which can absorb the spiritual energy of heaven and earth to strengthen the body; it might help us."
I took the book and studied it carefully; its profound teachings seemed to open a new door for me into an unknown yet enticing world. I knew this journey to Kunlun would be extraordinary.
Kunlun Mountains, here we come!
On the day of departure, the entire Du Family came to see us off. Mr. Du set aside his usual seriousness and earnestly said to me, "Lingxi, Ming'er has always been stubborn; where you're going is fraught with danger—please bear with him."
I held Mr. Du's hand and smiled reassuringly. "Dad, don’t worry; I'll take good care of him."
Mother Du grasped my hand tightly with concern in her eyes. "Lingxi, please be careful and come back soon."
I nodded in agreement as warmth surged in my heart. Although the Du Family was large and prosperous, their harmony made me feel a long-lost sense of family affection.
After bidding farewell to the Du Family, Du Ming and I set off on our journey to Kunlun Mountain. Along the way, we climbed mountains and crossed ridges, enduring hardships that most people could hardly imagine.
“Lingxi, be careful!”
I slipped and nearly fell off a cliff, but fortunately, Du Ming was quick to grab me. Still shaken, I patted my chest and looked at him gratefully. “Thank you, Du Ming.”
Du Ming frowned, his eyes filled with concern. “Lingxi, are you okay? Did you get hurt?”
I shook my head to indicate that I was fine. Only then did Du Ming relax a little, but he still held my hand tightly, afraid that I might encounter another mishap.
We continued onward, the mountain path becoming increasingly rugged and the weather worsening. The wind howled and heavy rain poured down, reducing visibility to almost nothing. We trudged forward with great difficulty, our clothes soaked through by the rain, shivering from the cold.
“Roar!”
A deafening roar suddenly erupted as a massive black bear charged out from the dense forest, its mouth wide open as it lunged at us. I was so frightened that my face turned pale, instinctively closing my eyes.
“Lingxi, don’t be afraid!”
Du Ming shielded me behind him and brandished his dagger as he faced the bear. With flashes of steel and a fierce struggle, the bear let out a terrible cry and collapsed to the ground.
I opened my eyes to see Du Ming covered in blood, a wave of fear washing over me. If it weren't for him, I would have surely met my end at the bear's jaws.
We pressed on and finally discovered a hidden cave deep within a thicket. The entrance was obscured by vines; without careful searching, it would have been nearly impossible to find.
Could this be the entrance to the secret realm?
