I took one last glance in the direction of the Du Family Old Residence before getting into the taxi without looking back. I knew what my departure meant. Du Ming had superficially agreed to let me go, but knowing him, he would never just let it slide. Rather than letting him worry, it was better for me to disappear for a while and return once the storm had passed.
As the taxi left the city, I deliberately avoided all surveillance cameras, constantly changing routes. As expected, just after leaving the Du Family's territory, I felt a powerful sense of awareness locking onto me. The enemy was faster and more ruthless than I had imagined.
"Driver, please hurry up; I'm in a rush," I said calmly to the driver, though my palms were already sweating.
The driver seemed startled by my anxious tone and pressed the accelerator, causing the car to shoot forward like an arrow. Through the rearview mirror, I saw a black SUV closely pursuing us, its license plate deliberately obscured—definitely not a good sign.
"Lingxi, you can't escape! Just surrender!" A cold voice came from the car's phone system; I recognized it as the leader of the opposing force, the man who had always wanted me dead.
"Dream on!" I coldly replied while quickly dialing Bai Wei's number.
"Wwei, I've been targeted; can you help me check..." Before I could finish my sentence, a powerful force shattered my phone into a pile of scrap metal. Immediately after, there was a violent jolt as the taxi was forced to stop by the roadside. Before I could react, the door was yanked open roughly, and two men in black grabbed me from either side.
I was shoved into the back seat of the SUV, my hands bound behind my back and my mouth gagged. I could only watch helplessly as I was taken away from familiar streets. My heart raced not out of fear but out of anger. I, Guo Lingxi, had always been the one to scheme against others; how could I be reduced to such a pitiful state?
"Think you can catch me? You should know your own weight!" I scoffed internally while discreetly observing my surroundings for an opportunity to escape.
The vehicle twisted and turned into an abandoned factory area. I noticed several luxury cars parked outside one of the buildings—it was clear this was not a legitimate place. It seemed they intended to deal with me here.
With a loud bang, the door swung open, and I was dragged out roughly. I pretended to be too weak to resist as they pulled me into the factory.
Inside the dimly lit factory, there was a pungent moldy smell mixed with faint sounds of mice squeaking. I was thrown onto the ground and looked up to see the leader of the opposing force sitting behind a dilapidated desk, playing with a dagger and wearing a sinister smile.
"Guo Lingxi, we meet again," he said slowly, his tone dripping with mockery.
I snorted coldly but remained silent. I knew that anything I said now would be pointless. I had to stay calm and look for an escape opportunity.
"What's wrong? Are you scared now?" He stood up and walked over to me, lifting my chin with his dagger. "Too bad it's too late."
Just then, my phone rang unexpectedly. A surge of hope filled me—it must be Bai Wei! She must have tracked my location!
"Who?" The leader of the opposing force was clearly startled by the sudden ringtone and asked sharply.
Seizing the opportunity, I struggled to sit up and feigned calmness as I said, "It's my friend; she's worried about me and just wanted to check in."
"A friend?" He sneered. "Do you think I'll believe that?"
"Believe it or not," I shrugged. "You can't stop it anyway."
He hesitated for a moment as if weighing his options. Taking advantage of this pause, I took a deep breath and secretly summoned my internal energy, preparing to strike him decisively.
"Fine, I'll let you answer," he finally said but with a hint of cunning in his voice. "But you'd better pray your friend is genuinely concerned about you; otherwise..."
His words remained unspoken, but the threat was evident. I took the phone and pressed the answer button.
“Lingxi, where are you? I found out…” Bai Wei's anxious voice came through the line, but before she could finish, she was interrupted by a busy signal.
“Vivi? Vivi?” I shouted into the phone, but all I received in return was endless silence.
“It seems your friend has run into a bit of trouble,” the leader of the opposing force said gleefully. “Now, do you still want to escape?”
I knew that Bai Wei must have been exposed. Damn it! I should have anticipated that he would use Bai Wei to threaten me!
“What do you want?” I asked coldly, suppressing my anger.
“Very simple, I want you to hand over…”
Before he could finish his sentence, a loud crash interrupted him. The factory door was slammed open from the outside, and a group of men in black rushed in, surrounding us completely.
“Du Ming!” I exclaimed in disbelief.
He was dressed in a black trench coat, his gaze icy, as if he had walked out of hell itself. How could Du Ming be here? Wasn't he supposed to be at the company handling affairs? Had he been tracking me all along?
Before I could sort out my thoughts, Du Ming had already engaged in combat with the opposing forces. Gunfire, shouts of battle, and the clashing of metal mixed together, turning the entire factory into a scene from Purgatory.
“What are you doing here?” I managed to run to Du Ming amidst the chaos, grabbing his arm and anxiously asking, “It's too dangerous here; you need to leave!”
Du Ming grasped my hand in return; his hand was large and warm, contrasting sharply with his cold eyes. He looked down at me and said firmly, “I told you, I won't let you get hurt again.”
His voice was not loud, but in the noisy environment, it stood out clearly as if it carried some kind of magic that instantly calmed my inner turmoil and fear.
“But Bai Wei…” I thought of Bai Wei who had been taken away, and worry surged within me again.
“Don't worry; I've already sent someone to rescue her,” Du Ming seemed to see through my thoughts and gently reassured me. “Your safety is more important than anything.”
I nodded silently, no longer speaking but holding onto his hand tightly, feeling the warmth of his palm.
At that moment, the leader of the opposing force suddenly let out a strange cry; he pulled out a black talisman from his pocket and began chanting incantations.
As he recited his spell, the talisman emitted an eerie black light that rapidly spread outward.
“Be careful!” I sensed a powerful evil force approaching and quickly pushed Du Ming away.
“Ah!” I fell to the ground in pain as a sharp agony pierced through my chest as if I had been stabbed by a blade.
Looking down, I saw a black dagger had somehow pierced my chest; blood flowed continuously from the wound, staining my clothes red.
“Lingxi!” Du Ming exclaimed as he tightly embraced me, his eyes filled with pain and guilt.
“Why are you so foolish…” He gently stroked my cheek, his tone full of compassion. “Why did you shield me…”
I wanted to tell him that I was fine, that I had only temporarily sealed my heart's pulse, and that as soon as the dagger was removed, I would recover. However, I had no strength left and could only watch helplessly as my consciousness gradually blurred, ultimately plunging into darkness…
