I stood by the roadside, watching the crowd of people coming and going, unsure of where to go. I had been wandering around the New District for several days, asking everyone I met, "Do you know how to get to Jinchang Group?" But after asking for a long time, no one seemed to know where Jinchang Group was located.
Eventually, I stopped a police officer. His surname was Huang, and his full name was Huang Xin. He was an officer from the New City Public Security Bureau. Huang Xin told me, "The Jinchang Group you mentioned should be in New City."
"This is the New District; it's still quite far from New City," he continued. I suddenly panicked, "Then how do I get to New City?" Huang Xin patted my head gently and said, "Right now, transportation is cut off everywhere; you can't get to New City."
"You might as well stay here for now and wait until the situation stabilizes before going to New City to find your sister." I felt lost and didn't know what to do. Huang Xin took me to a refugee shelter set up by the government, where they registered me and arranged for my accommodation.
Just before leaving, Huang Xin suddenly asked, "What’s your name?" I timidly replied, "My name is Zhao Di." Huang Xin nodded and said, "Zhao Di, I know a girl who looks quite a bit like you."
"She is also looking for her family; maybe you two can connect." The girl Huang Xin mentioned was named Zhao Shuyun. Three years ago, she fled from the north to New City and had been searching for her sister ever since.
As I followed Huang Xin to find Zhao Shuyun, I felt a bit scared inside. I didn't know if she was my sister. Zhao Shuyun lived in another building of the shelter, but when we went to look for her, she wasn't home. The neighbor said she had gone to the labor market to look for work.
We found the labor market again, but after searching around, we still couldn't find her. I had a faint premonition that Zhao Shuyun was my Sister. Huang Xin seemed to have the same feeling. He quietly comforted me, "Don't worry, I'll help you find her." I nodded gratefully. Huang Xin is a police officer, and he has good connections.
Within a few days, he found out Zhao Shuyun's whereabouts. She was working as a waitress in a restaurant, and when Huang Xin took me to find her, she was mopping the floor in the lobby. As soon as I saw her figure from a distance, my heart started racing. The girl was small and thin, wearing a white waitress uniform with her hair tied in a ponytail; her back looked so much like my Sister.
Huang Xin whispered, "That's her, no doubt about it." I was so nervous that I could hardly breathe. Huang Xin stepped forward and patted her shoulder. Zhao Shuyun slowly turned around, and the moment I saw her face, I froze. That was definitely my Sister! Her brows and eyes, her features—they were exactly like my mother's.
When Zhao Shuyun saw Huang Xin, she smiled and said, "Officer Zhao, what brings you here?" Huang Xin stepped aside and pushed me in front of her: "Take a look at her; is she your sister?" Zhao Shuyun stared at me for a few seconds before suddenly widening her eyes: "Zhao Di?"
My nose tinged with emotion as tears streamed down my face: "Sister!" The mop in Zhao Shuyun's hand fell to the ground as she rushed to hug me, bursting into tears. I cried along with her. The cries of the two girls echoed in the silent night sky for a long time.
I reunited with Sister.
She held my hand and looked me up and down, saying, "Zhao Di, you've grown taller; you're even taller than I am."
I gestured, "I've reached one meter sixty."
Sister smiled, "Grow a bit more; you'll look even better."
I shyly lowered my head.
Sister told me that she had been sold to the boss of a company in New City as a mistress, but not long after, the boss got bored and discarded her.
Sister was kicked out and ended up on the streets.
She didn't know anyone and couldn't find a job, so she had to wander around.
Later, while scavenging in a park, she met a Veteran.
The veteran's name was Jin Ming; he was from New City and had served in the military there.
After retiring, Jin Ming worked in New City and would occasionally visit the park where he met Sister.
Seeing Sister in such a pitiful state, Jin Ming took her back to New City and helped her find a job.
Sister was extremely grateful and regarded Jin Ming as her benefactor.
Jin Ming often helped Sister, and over time, they developed feelings for each other.
Sister ended up with Jin Ming, and they started living together.
I looked at Sister in surprise, "Sister, you..."
Sister shyly lowered her head again, "Zhao Di, please don't blame Sister."
"Jin Ming is a good person; he treats me very well."
I stared blankly at Sister, unsure of what to say.
Sister is two years older than me; she is only twenty-two this year.
But she looks like a woman in her thirties.
