At the Engagement Banquet, my Future Mother-in-Law was causing a scene.
First, she made me sign the Marriage Guarantee for Three Children After Marriage, and then she started to worry about my Prenuptial Property.
What was even more outrageous was that she actually incited my fiancé to create Wedding Chaos: "A wife should be beaten; a man who doesn't hit his wife will be useless after marriage!"
I flipped the table and said, "This marriage can either happen or not happen!"
To my surprise, she pulled out my Gynecological Diagnosis Report from my bag and called me a slut.
My fiancé slapped me in public and announced he wanted to break off the engagement.
I covered my burning face and laughed, "You better take a good look at whose name is on that diagnosis report!"
I had been dating Han Yuhao for five years, and last month he finally proposed to me.
When my dad found out I was getting engaged, he was overjoyed and immediately decided to cover all the costs of the Engagement Banquet.
"I have to do this so that Yuhai won't be treated poorly in the future. Your mother passed away early, and your father's only wish is to see you married."
Seeing my dad's gray hair and his satisfied expression made my nose tingle with emotion.
We are not a wealthy family, and the Engagement Banquet is not a small expense, but my dad still did his best to give me the best.
Just when I was happily calling Han Yuhao, he said, "According to our customs, it's supposed to be the woman's side that pays. Our family has already given 188,000 as Bride Price; what more do you want?"
His words not only extinguished all my enthusiasm but also made me tremble with anger.
"What do you mean? Isn't the Engagement Banquet a matter for both families? Why has it become something we women should bear?"
"Also, the Bride Price is based on your hometown's customs. If you don't want to give it, there's no need to force it. My parents are marrying off their daughter, not selling her!"
Looking back on our discussions about the engagement, Han Yuhao and I had argued at least ten times, and it always came back to money.
Seeing him being so calculating made me feel like our five-year relationship had turned into a transaction—a string of numbers.
It was truly disheartening and utterly pointless.
Han Yuhao remained silent for a while, and after several minutes, he finally let out a cold laugh: "Xia An'an, I won't hold this against you this time, but you need to change your attitude after marriage. You can't be as willful as you were when we were dating; you're no longer a young girl."
I was so angry that I immediately hung up the phone, and the thought of calling off the engagement flashed through my mind.
At that moment, my dad was quietly knocking on the door while holding a cup of hot milk.
"Did you have a fight with Han Yuhao? Don't be upset. Life is like this; there are bound to be disagreements," he said. "You've been together for five years; it's not easy to get to this point. You both need to be more tolerant of each other."
Dad was right. We had been together for five years, and it had taken a lot to reach this stage. If I were to break up over such a trivial matter, it would indeed be too willful of me.
Looking at the photo of us on my phone and recalling our five years together, I ultimately swallowed my pride.
After that incident, Han Yuhao became much colder towards me.
Fortunately, the Engagement Banquet still took place as scheduled and was unaffected.
On that day, I got ready early, did my makeup, took beautiful photos, and waited with friends and family for the guests to arrive.
However, when we arrived at the hotel, we were stunned by what we saw.
In the small banquet hall stood a large crowd of people, and the most crucial part was that I didn't recognize any of them.
Just as I was feeling confused, Han Yuhao and his mother, Zhang Yanyan, approached us with smiles on their faces: "We have many relatives from our hometown. They heard that my daughter-in-law booked a big restaurant in the city and couldn't resist coming to support you."
"Mom, didn't you say that only one table of guests would come from your side? There are too many people; we can't fit them all," I replied.
"Fit? What do you mean fit? This venue is so large; we can squeeze in. They're all family; don't be so stingy," she said.
When we initially discussed the number of attendees, Han Yuhao had clearly stated that his family would only bring one table of guests, so my dad had only booked the smallest hall.
But now, Zhang Yanyan has directly brought a whole busload of people, more than three times the number we initially agreed upon.
Among these guests, more than half were brought in at the last minute, and some didn't even know Han Yuhao.
It was clear that she was trying to show off without wanting to spend any money, treating my family like a cash cow!
Although I felt uncomfortable about it, I reminded myself that they were here to support me. I contacted the hotel to pay for a larger private room and tripled the amount of food and drinks.
After all the fuss, the ceremony finally began.
Under the spotlight, Han Yuhao recited his vows with deep emotion. Looking at his handsome face, the earlier gloom instantly faded away.
Although Han Yuhao is just an ordinary person, over the past five years we have weathered storms together, and I have long regarded him as family.
I don't mind squeezing onto a bus with him or eating instant noodles together; I don't mind staying up late with him for work or continuing to live in a rented apartment after marriage.
I only hope that we can rely on each other, trust one another, and steadily navigate through life together.
Just as we were about to sign the engagement certificate with deep affection, a sharp female voice suddenly rang out from the audience.
I turned around, and it was none other than Zhang Yanyan.
