Li Xiaolu wandered aimlessly on the streets of Manhattan. Her mind was in turmoil. She never expected that she had been deceived for so long by the person she loved the most. Zhao Shu's words pierced her heart like a knife. Jijun and his stepmother, Liu Li's words, suffocated her even more. She always thought that her relationship with Jijun developed naturally. But it turned out that Jijun had known about her existence all along. He learned everything about her from Zhao Shu.
Li Xiaolu recalled the time they spent together after they got together; Jijun would often ask her about her family, both intentionally and unintentionally. At that time, she thought Jijun was just trying to get to know her better, but in reality, he was only trying to confirm if she was the Li Xiaolu he knew. How ridiculous. She had foolishly fallen in love with someone who had ulterior motives to get close to her.
Li Xiaolu felt like such an idiot. Her self-esteem and feelings were trampled under Jijun's feet. It hurt so much. She couldn't help but remember the first time she met Jijun. She recalled that she had just moved to Los Angeles and was sick due to the unfamiliar climate and environment. She was alone in the hospital receiving an IV drip. Halfway through, Jijun suddenly appeared in her hospital room. She was surprised and asked how he got there.
Jijun said he went to her school to find her, and a classmate told him she was in the hospital. She then asked why he didn't call her. Jijun smiled but didn't say anything. At that moment, she didn't think much of it, but now she realized that perhaps Jijun just wanted to surprise her. After all, they had just started dating, and their relationship was still unstable. He wanted to create some romantic memories for her to cherish later on.
But he didn't know that what he brought her was only pain. Li Xiaolu closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
She wiped away her tears and quickened her pace.
She didn't want to stay in this place any longer.
Everything here reminded her of Jijun.
She couldn't help but wonder what Jijun was doing now.
Was he plotting something with his stepmother again?
Li Xiaolu felt utterly exhausted.
She really wanted to escape from this place as soon as possible.
She walked for a long time until her legs felt weak before she finally stopped.
She stood by the roadside and hailed a taxi.
After giving the address of her apartment, she leaned back in the seat and closed her eyes.
Her mind was in chaos.
She kept thinking about the conversation between Jijun and Liu Li.
Liu Li had said, "I heard that you are still in contact with that girl?"
Jijun's voice was cold, "What does it have to do with you?"
Liu Li scoffed, "Don't forget who helped you out of trouble back then."
Jijun sneered, "So you wanted me to go to Los Angeles?"
Liu Li replied, "I did that for your own good. Didn't you promise me not to contact that girl anymore?"
Jijun said coldly, "If it weren't for your interference, I wouldn't have broken up with Lulu."
Liu Li laughed mockingly, "Oh? Really? So are you here to settle scores with me now?"
Jijun's voice was low, "I warn you, don't hurt her again."
Liu Li's tone was sarcastic, "Oh? If I give you another chance now, what would you do?"
Jijun's voice was icy and firm, "I won't give up on Lulu again."
Liu Li scoffed, "Then let's see what happens."
Li Xiaolu's heart sank completely.
She felt so foolish.
Foolish enough to believe Jijun's lies.
He actually said that if it weren't for Liu Li's interference, he wouldn't have broken up with her.
But clearly, they were the ones who broke up first.
It was she who initiated the breakup.
It was Jijun who had given up on her first.
Li Xiaolu closed her eyes as tears streamed down the corners of her eyes.
She was really in so much pain.
She really wanted to escape from here.
To get away from Jijun, to get away from everything related to him.
Li Xiaolu returned to the apartment and packed her things.
She planned to go back to her home country as soon as possible.
She called Zhang Lin and told her that she intended to return home.
Zhang Lin was surprised, "Why so suddenly?"
Li Xiaolu said, "I miss home."
Zhang Lin sighed, "What about your job?"
Li Xiaolu replied, "I have already applied for a position and will start next Monday. After finishing this month, I will go back."
Zhang Lin was silent for a moment and said, "Lulu, tell me honestly, is something wrong?"
Li Xiaolu smiled lightly, "Nothing's wrong; I just miss home."
Zhang Lin said, "I don't believe you; you must be hiding something from me."
Li Xiaolu smiled again, "Really, nothing's wrong. I just feel quite lonely being out here by myself, so I want to go back and develop there."
Zhang Lin thought for a moment and said, "Alright, since you've made up your mind, I won't try to persuade you anymore. When are you leaving?"
Li Xiaolu said, "As soon as possible."
Zhang Lin asked, "What about your graduation certificate?"
Li Xiaolu replied, "Can you pick it up for me?"
Zhang Lin agreed.
After hanging up the phone, Li Xiaolu lay down on the bed.
She stared at the ceiling as tears streamed down the corners of her eyes.
She was really so tired.
