That evening, Li Xiaolu was working late at home. Suddenly, she felt a wave of dizziness. She was momentarily stunned and hadn't yet realized what was happening when the water cup on her desk toppled over, spilling water everywhere. It was then that Li Xiaolu realized there had been an earthquake.
She immediately ran out of her bedroom, not even taking the time to put on her slippers, and dashed barefoot to the door, opening it to go outside.
Downstairs, a crowd had already gathered, and everyone was discussing the tremor they had just experienced. Some were speculating whether it was an earthquake, while others wondered if the building had collapsed.
Li Xiaolu took out her phone to check the news, but there was nothing reported. She tried calling Jijun, but the call wouldn’t go through. Her anxiety grew even more.
Reluctantly, she called Zhang Lin. Fortunately, Zhang Lin's phone connected quickly.
Li Xiaolu hurriedly asked, "Are you okay?"
Zhang Lin replied, "I'm fine, what's wrong?"
Li Xiaolu said, "There was an earthquake just now."
Zhang Lin paused for a moment before asking, "Are you alright?"
Li Xiaolu reassured her, "I'm fine; I'm at home."
Zhang Lin sighed in relief, "That's good."
Li Xiaolu then asked, "Have you seen Jijun?"
Zhang Lin responded, "He went to the office today; he’s not here with me."
Li Xiaolu felt even more worried. Zhang Lin said, "Don't worry; he’s definitely okay."
Li Xiaolu nodded, "I understand."
After hanging up the phone, Li Xiaolu looked at the bustling doorway and silently prayed that Jijun was safe.
After more than an hour, Li Xiaolu finally saw a familiar car approaching. It was Jijun's car. Li Xiaolu immediately stood up. The car door opened, and Jijun got out. He spotted Li Xiaolu right away and ran towards her. Li Xiaolu also ran towards him. Jijun embraced Li Xiaolu tightly. She could hear a slight tremor in his voice as he said, "I'm so glad you're okay."
Li Xiaolu felt a lump in her throat and hugged him back. She had been so scared just moments ago, fearing that something had happened to Jijun. Now, seeing him standing safely in front of her, her heart finally felt at ease.
Around them, neighbors were murmuring about the scene. "Wow, this young man is really something. When I saw him running down during the earthquake, I knew he must have someone he cares about," one neighbor remarked. "Yeah, you could see how anxious he was earlier. Now that he sees his girlfriend is fine, he can relax," another added. "I really envy them," said another voice.
Hearing these comments, Li Xiaolu couldn't help but laugh. She released Jijun from her embrace and looked at him, saying, "I was really worried about you too."
Jijun paused for a moment, staring at Li Xiaolu. "Really?" he asked.
Li Xiaolu nodded, "Yes."
Jijun then asked, "Did you try calling me?"
Li Xiaolu replied, "I did, but I couldn't get through."
Jijun pulled out his phone to check it and said, "It's dead." He looked back at Li Xiaolu and explained, "When you called me, I was on my way back."
Li Xiaolu said, "Me too. I saw you weren't at the office, so I called you, but I couldn't get through. I called Zhang Lin, and she said you weren't with her, which made me even more worried."
Jijun stared deeply at Li Xiaolu. "Lulu..."
Li Xiaolu continued, "I'm really scared something happened to you."
Jijun hugged her tightly. His voice was a bit hoarse. "I won't get into any trouble."
Li Xiaolu closed her eyes. "Okay."
...
Because of the aftershock earlier, everyone couldn't go back and had to wait there.
Li Xiaolu and Jijun sat beside the flower bed, leaning against each other.
Jijun asked her, "Are you scared?"
Li Xiaolu shook her head. "Not scared."
Jijun smiled slightly. "I'm not very scared either."
Li Xiaolu looked at him. "What are you afraid of?"
Jijun replied, "Afraid of losing you."
Li Xiaolu paused. She looked at Jijun. "I won't leave you."
Jijun was taken aback. He stared at Li Xiaolu. "What did you say?"
Li Xiaolu repeated, "I won't leave you."
Jijun's eyes lit up. He excitedly asked, "Is that true?"
Li Xiaolu said, "But I have a condition."
Jijun quickly asked, "What condition?"
Li Xiaolu replied, "You need to find what you lost from me, and then we can get back together."
Jijun paused.
Li Xiaolu looked at him. "Can you find it?"
Jijun said, "Of course."
He took off the necklace from around his neck and handed it to Li Xiaolu.
When Li Xiaolu looked, she saw that the ring was hanging on it.
She exclaimed in surprise, "How did you...?"
Jijun replied, "I found it on the ground after you left that day."
Li Xiaolu was speechless, "Why didn't you tell me?"
Jijun said, "Because I wanted to put it back on you myself."
He stood up and said to Li Xiaolu, "Give me your hand."
Li Xiaolu extended her hand.
Jijun reverently helped her put on the ring.
He gazed at Li Xiaolu and asked, "Is it okay now?"
Li Xiaolu looked at him.
Jijun's eyes were filled with anticipation, anxiety, and a hint of nervousness.
Suddenly, Li Xiaolu smiled.
She nodded and said, "It's okay."
Jijun embraced her tightly.
Li Xiaolu also held him close.
...
Jijun and Li Xiaolu kissed again.
After more than three years apart, their kiss was still perfectly in sync.
They desperately breathed in each other's air, wishing they could merge into one another's bodies.
It was unclear how long they stayed like that before they slowly parted.
Jijun caressed Li Xiaolu's cheek and said hoarsely, "Lulu, I love you."
Li Xiaolu looked at him and replied, "I love you too."
