When she cried, it completely flustered me. Wasn't it just a few days late? Was it really worth being this upset? They say women are made of water, and that couldn't be more true. However, after I comforted Qin Senior Sister for a bit, I finally learned from her why she had called to yell at someone so early in the morning.
Since I mentioned that I would come to Thailand to help her get an Amulet, her sister and boyfriend had already fought three times in just this short week. Each time, they had just come out of the hospital, only to return within a few hours. The whole family took turns trying to persuade them, but her sister was determined to stay with her boyfriend, claiming that fighting was a sign of love.
Such nonsense; I don't know who invented that ridiculous idea.
Last night, Qin Senior Sister suddenly received a call from her mother saying that her sister was seriously injured and had been admitted to the hospital. They didn't even know if she could be saved. She rushed to the hospital overnight, and the surgery had already been going on for over four hours without completion. The doctor said the chances of survival were slim, and even if she did survive, she would likely end up in a Vegetative State.
When I asked what happened, it turned out that the couple had argued last night and then started fighting. Somehow, her sister fell from the sixth floor. Her boyfriend claimed she jumped, but the family believed he must have pushed her.
The two sides were at an impasse; her father even teamed up with several uncles to beat up that guy. Now his family was unhappy too; they felt it was unjust to be assaulted before the situation was clarified. After calling the police, a bunch of people went straight to the station to give statements and hadn't come out yet.
After dawn, the surgery finally concluded. As the doctor had said, although her sister was saved, the brain damage was severe, and it was unlikely she would wake up. Qin Senior Sister and her mother immediately broke down in tears; a perfectly healthy person would now be bedridden forever—what were they going to do?
After crying for a while, Qin Senior Sister suddenly remembered that this all stemmed from the Amulet incident and directly called me back. Hearing what happened left me feeling quite frustrated as well.
Although I had already told Qin Senior Sister that relying on Mind Control Powder to force someone’s feelings was not advisable, I never imagined things would escalate to such a serious level. In this matter, her sister resembled Guo Senior from before; both knew it was impossible yet couldn't bring themselves to let go.
However, the Composite Yan Tong Amulet I bought for her sister contained very little Yin Liao and would hardly affect her mental state. So all these thoughts came from her own heart; frankly speaking, she brought this upon herself. But even if I were foolish enough to think so, I wouldn't dare say it in front of Qin Senior Sister; otherwise, she might actually kill me.
After some comforting words, Qin Senior Sister stopped crying but firmly stated that her sister's Vegetative State was my responsibility and that I had to take full accountability. My head felt heavy as I replied, "How am I supposed to take responsibility? Am I supposed to marry her?"
Qin Senior Sister insisted, "Either you marry her or you make her wake up! I don’t care! If you don’t take responsibility, I’ll call the police!"
I said, "Calling the police won’t help; these kinds of things happen everywhere in the world—if something goes wrong, it's considered an accident."
Upon hearing this, Qin Senior Sister started crying again: "I knew all men are heartless! You just want to play with women and then walk away like cowards!"
I was so frustrated that I couldn't speak, thinking to myself that it wasn't my fault, just an undeserved disaster. However, I have a natural weakness for seeing women cry; when they do, my heart softens, and I can only speak gently and negotiate. In the end, Qin Senior Sister made an outrageous request. She said, "Didn't you tell me something about a Yin card? That little ghost is very effective, right? Fine, you get one for me. As long as it can wake my sister up, I'll pay any amount!"
I was taken aback. Can a Yin card really wake someone in a vegetative state? Strictly speaking, it's not impossible; after all, whether someone in a vegetative state recovers does depend on luck. But this was too far-fetched for me to agree to directly. I quickly put on my pajamas and ran to find Second Uncle in the next room.
I knocked on the door vigorously. Second Uncle, still groggy from sleep, leaned against the door frame. From his shoulder, I could vaguely see two women lying on the bed like crabs. Woken up from his dreams by the noise, Second Uncle was not pleased and told me to get to the point or face the consequences.
I explained Qin Senior Sister's situation to him. After listening, Second Uncle yawned and said, "What does that have to do with you? She should go find a doctor or report that guy for attempted murder."
I was afraid Qin Senior Sister would hear those words, so I covered my phone and told Second Uncle about her request. After hearing it, he was momentarily stunned and then shrugged, saying, "I can't guarantee she'll wake up for sure. But if her family has money, there are a few expensive little ghosts I could sell."
This typical businessman mindset gave me a headache. I had to say, "It's not that I really want to sell her a little ghost; I just want to placate her first. Isn't it said that time heals all wounds? Maybe in a few months she won't care about this anymore."
Second Uncle responded with an "Oh," and said, "Then what are you waiting for? Just get her one and say it's the best from Thailand. Pray sincerely for three years; she'll definitely wake up. Hmm, don't charge too much—two or three thousand will do. Yes, Renminbi, not Thai Baht."
Just casually selling something for two or three thousand Renminbi? What if they find out the truth? I'd be in big trouble! With such an unreliable uncle, I seriously doubted if he was picked up from a garbage dump by Grandpa; how could he be so different from Second Uncle?
However, Second Uncle's suggestion was indeed good. After thinking for a while, I asked him to help me get a decent Authentic piece. Even if it couldn't wake someone in a vegetative state, at least it would help Qin Senior Sister's family live better. As for the Yin card and little ghost, I genuinely didn't want to sell them to someone like her.
Second Uncle waved his hand impatiently, signaling that I could leave now. He said, "Later you can pick one at home; whichever you like just send it over to her as long as it's at cost price. What a unlucky kid—never even kissed anyone yet causing so much trouble! If you really got into bed with her, you'd probably end up giving your head to her as a ball!"
The door slammed shut behind me as I hurried back to my room and closed the door. I told Qin Senior Sister that there was indeed an Amulet that could wake someone up but that it worked slowly and might require several years of continuous offerings to succeed. To prevent Qin Senior Sister from asking more questions, I clearly told her that this Amulet was already the best available; no matter if she spent tens of thousands or even millions, the effect would still be the same.
Qin Senior Sister immediately agreed and asked me to send the Amulet right away while handing me the money in person. At the same time, she wanted me to sign an agreement stating that if her sister didn't wake up after three years, I would be responsible for it for life.
I certainly wasn't willing to sign such an agreement. Second Uncle had made it very clear: recovery from a vegetative state depends entirely on luck; the Amulet might not have much effect in this case either. If it worked at all, it meant she was supposed to wake up anyway; it would just be earlier than expected. So I muttered under my breath, "How about marrying someone in a vegetative state? Marrying you would be more reasonable."
Qin Senior Sister had sharp ears; upon hearing this she directly said, "As long as you can make her wake up, I'll marry you! But if she doesn't wake up, then you have to marry her!"
I was taken aback, not expecting her to say such a thing. With Qin Senior Sister's looks and figure, there could be enough people chasing after her to fill the entire playground. Marrying her wouldn't be a bad deal at all. But I couldn't agree; what if her sister really woke up? If she didn't wake up, marrying someone in a vegetative state would be worse than buying an inflatable doll—at least that would make sounds if you put batteries in it.
I stammered and spoke ambiguously, just refusing to agree to sign the agreement. Qin Senior Sister knew it was hard to force someone to do something over the phone, so she had no choice but to let me send the Amulet first and discuss other matters when we met.
From this perspective, Qin Senior Sister was indeed very good to her sister. How lucky it must be to have such a sister. After hanging up the phone, I forcibly dragged my Second Uncle, who hadn't had enough fun yet, back home. In his bedroom, Second Uncle opened a wardrobe and pointed at the various Amulets inside with an unhappy expression, saying, "Pick whatever you like; they're all good stuff."
The wardrobe was divided into ten shelves, each containing different items—some Authentic, some Kuman. There were very few Yin card and little ghosts; only a handful were like the difficult-to-handle Big Biling family. I looked through them one by one and asked Second Uncle about those I didn't understand. At first, he spoke with a sense of pride, telling me when he acquired certain Amulets, how much he spent back then, and how much they were worth now. But after I annoyed him with questions, he simply grabbed a few from inside and said, "Just these few; pick any one of them. They're all a thousand times better than the last Yantong Amulet."
A thousand times was certainly an exaggeration, but judging by the labels on the Amulets, they were indeed valuable antiques. Measured by today's prices, each piece was worth no less than one hundred thousand Thai Baht. This was just Second Uncle being stingy; he only took out the cheapest ones. Otherwise, touching any of the others would cost tens of thousands or even more.
I picked and chose until I finally selected a limited edition Four-Faced Buddha blessed by Long Po Chan Nan for Qin Senior Sister. I intended to grab another health-preserving Medicine Master Amulet, but Second Uncle slapped my hand away without hesitation and closed the wardrobe door, saying, "Don't go too far; she only spent a little money. Giving her this Amulet means I've lost quite a bit!"
I chuckled awkwardly and said, "Rich enough to not care about small change..."
"Get lost!"
Besides this Four-Faced Buddha, I also asked Second Uncle to help me pick out eight ordinary Amulets to send back to the mainland. I called Hu Xiaoyi and insisted that he personally deliver the Four-Faced Buddha to Qin Senior Sister.
Hu Xiaoyi readily agreed and then told me that Liang Xi had been acting strangely lately.
I asked how he was acting strangely. He hesitated for a moment before saying, "Didn't I tell you before? He often walks around alone at night as if he's anxious. It's gotten worse recently; last night while I was sleeping, I suddenly felt someone touching me all over. When I opened my eyes, Liang Xi was standing there with a flushed face—it was really terrifying."
