I described everything as it was, then quickly turned my head away; otherwise, if I looked a moment longer, I really wouldn’t be able to hold on. Banrada was startled to see the baby bones covered in blood and mud. He exclaimed, "No wonder that person is having bad luck. Offering something like this as an Amulet is no different from a Kuman. Which child would want to be wrapped in filthy things all day? It's already impressive that she hasn't been hurt for so many days!"
I guessed it might be because Qin Senior Sister often went to see her. Qin Senior Sister carried the Four-Faced Buddha she got from Second Uncle, which had comprehensive effects. If it weren't for its influence, the little ghost in the flowerpot would have already killed Zheng Xuejie. Banrada told me that given the situation, it would be best to send the Amulet back quickly and ask Ajan to re-empower it. I asked how much it would cost for the re-empowerment. Banrada thought for a moment and said, "Probably around ten thousand."
"What!" I exclaimed in shock. It only cost six thousand to buy, and now re-empowerment costs ten thousand? That's almost double!
Banrada said, "Do you think re-empowerment is easy? This little ghost is angry with her; Ajan has to first eliminate the Resentment before he can re-empower it. It's quite troublesome. Also, she must have some Yin Qi on her from being haunted by the little ghost. The ten thousand includes Ajan drawing talismans to dispel the Yin Qi, so it's not too expensive."
I wasn't very familiar with the market for Amulets since I had always bought them at a low price from Second Uncle. However, Second Uncle had mentioned that the profit in the Amulet business relies partly on initial transactions and mostly on after-sales service, which usually costs more than the original transaction. After all, anyone needing help after buying an Amulet is usually in trouble and willing to spend money to save their lives.
It was clear that Banrada would definitely make a profit from this, but I had no right to criticize him. He was dealing with real money; he couldn't just subsidize me.
I didn't immediately agree but instead repeated what I had learned to Zheng Xuejie. Upon hearing that the Amulet needed re-empowerment and that it would cost ten thousand, Zheng Xuejie’s eyes widened again: "How could a perfectly good Amulet end up like this? It has no protective measures at all, and now you want me to pay ten thousand?"
I replied, "This isn't someone else's fault; you've been using the Amulet all along, so of course you have to take responsibility when something goes wrong."
Zheng Xuejie said, "No way! I bought it for over seven thousand; even counting all the discounts, it's not enough to cover my costs. How can you ask me for more money now? You must have other ways to remedy this; you just don't want to tell me!"
I helplessly said, "You're dealing with a little ghost, not something else. If there were a way to resolve this without spending money, I wouldn't make you pay a dime."
"Can’t we just offer it again? I can just give it more offerings later," Zheng Xuejie suggested.
Regardless of how she put it, she was unwilling to spend ten thousand for the re-empowerment of the Amulet. Qin Senior Sister also tried to persuade her but with no effect either. I was really pushed into a corner and could only say it was up to her, but if something happened, don’t come looking for me! Seeing that I was getting a bit angry, Qin Senior Sister quickly mediated: "You two stop arguing. Just take the Amulet back and offer it for a couple of days first; if that doesn’t work out, we can discuss other options."
This was a delaying tactic, and I had nothing against it. As for Zheng Xuejie, she felt the same way.
After they left with the Potted Amulet, I explained the situation to Banrada. Knowing that the Victim was unwilling to pay, Banrada said, "This little troublemaker is not to be trifled with. You’d better persuade her more; otherwise, it might escalate into a big issue, and by then it will be too late to pay up. Also, I might be busy with other matters in a few days, so you better make a decision quickly. Otherwise, I won’t have time to look for Ajan."
After hanging up the phone, I stood there deep in thought and ultimately decided to go find Zheng Xuejie.
With the examples of Guo Senior and Zheng Xuezhang right in front of me, although hardly anyone at school knew their situation, personally, I didn’t want the Amulet I sold to lead anyone to a bad outcome. So, I rushed to the girls' dormitory, pleading with the Dormitory Matron and calling Qin Senior Sister. After much effort, I finally passed the "screening" and gained entry into this haven.
As I went upstairs, Qin Senior Sister complained a bit, saying, "You shouldn’t have sold her the Amulet; now everyone is arguing so loudly it’s about to blow the roof off."
I replied, "Who knew someone would be so bored as to pour menstrual blood into an Amulet? I mean, are you women all just sitting around with nothing better to do?"
This crude remark earned me an eye roll from Qin Senior Sister, but she didn’t argue back. If they weren’t bored out of their minds, who would engage in such pointless activities?
At the dormitory door, I heard intense arguing from inside. Zheng Xuejie was swearing, "If I did this myself, let me be struck by lightning and die a horrible death!"
Upon hearing this, Qin Senior Sister hurried inside to ask what was going on and why she was swearing. I followed her in just in time to see a Senior Sister with her hands on her hips saying, "I clearly saw her sneaking out at night and putting a sanitary pad on the flower pot; she did it herself! Why is she blaming others?"
Zheng Xuejie was stomping her feet in anger, saying, "Am I crazy? Why would I harm myself?"
The Senior Sister retorted, "You don’t even know if you’re crazy? Anyway, I saw it; believe it or not!"
"You’re full of crap! It must have been you!" Zheng Xuejie shouted as she prepared to charge at her.
I felt a headache coming on as I contemplated whether to intervene or find a place to hide to avoid getting splattered with blood. Seeing that the atmosphere was too tense, Qin Senior Sister quickly stepped in to pull Zheng Xuejie away. But these two were both convinced they were right; aside from them, no one could determine the truth of the matter. After a while, Qin Senior Sister pulled Zheng Xuejie out of the dormitory to help her calm down. I followed outside and asked Zheng Xuejie if she had ever had any conflicts with that girl.
Qin Senior Sister seemed somewhat familiar with their relationship and shook her head, saying, "We’ve always gotten along well. Last time something happened, she was running around trying to stop it and almost got into a fight with that scumbag."
I let out a sound of surprise; it seemed that their relationship was indeed quite good, and logically, such a thing shouldn't happen. Could it be that what the Senior Sister said was the truth, and that Zheng Xuejie had thrown the used sanitary napkin into the flower pot herself?
Zheng Xuejie was furious and said, "She's just talking nonsense! How could I possibly do something like that? I'm not tired of living! What will it take for you to believe me? Do I have to die for you to believe me?"
I thought about it, and she had a point; only someone with a bad mind would harm themselves. Oh, this was so frustrating—what on earth was going on?
This matter stirred up for more than two hours, but in the end, no conclusion was reached. To be safe, Qin Senior Sister took Zheng Xuejie to her own dormitory to prevent the two from clashing again upon seeing each other. I took the opportunity to ask the Senior Sister surnamed Li, who swore that she wasn't lying and insisted that Zheng Xuejie had done it herself!
I sighed and hurried out of the girls' dormitory; things were getting too complicated in there.
In the following days, Zheng Xuejie didn't come looking for me, and the Amulet naturally hadn't been sent back to Thailand. However, Qin Senior Sister came to see me many times. She told me that Zheng Xuejie was getting increasingly unlucky, almost choking on water while drinking. She was considering whether to secretly bring the Amulet over to me, whether to re-empower it or just throw it away—anything to help Zheng Xuejie get better.
I said that the Amulet had a spirit; it wasn't just an inanimate object. If we simply threw it away, that would be a major taboo, and it would cling to you until death. Therefore, we needed someone to dispel the little ghost's resentment first. Seeing Qin Senior Sister looking troubled, I felt sorry for her and said never mind; if it really came down to it, I would pay someone to help out—just treat it as if this transaction never happened.
Qin Senior Sister looked at me apologetically and said it was all her fault. If she hadn't talked so highly of me and Second Uncle, Zheng Xuejie wouldn't have been so interested in the Amulet. Normally, anyone who had been bewitched by Voodoo should keep their distance.
I waved my hand and said that one thing should be counted separately from another; this could also be seen as helping open up a market, so logically speaking, I should be grateful and couldn't blame her.
While we were chatting, suddenly the girl who had argued with Zheng Xuejie earlier ran over with a look of panic on her face and said, "She jumped off the building!"
She was obviously referring to Zheng Xuejie. I was taken aback and quickly ran over to see what had happened while asking why she jumped. The Senior Sister was almost in tears as she explained that Zheng Xuejie had come to find her at noon wanting to clarify the truth. But she had indeed seen Zheng Xuejie put the used sanitary napkin in the flower pot, so she couldn't back down. Upon hearing this, Zheng Xuejie turned around without saying a word and jumped from the fourth floor.
