"Lost it?" I was taken aback and quickly asked how it could have been lost.
Hu Xiaoyi said dejectedly that after he gave the bracelet to Qin Zhenzhen yesterday, the young girl was so moved that she offered herself to him. They spent the whole night in a small hotel, and when they woke up the next day, Qin Zhenzhen instinctively touched her wrist but found no bracelet. When she got up to look, her hands were empty.
This scared Hu Xiaoyi quite a bit; the boss of the Jade Store had made it very clear that the bracelet was worth at least several tens of thousands. Spending five thousand on it felt like winning the lottery. If it really was lost, it would be incredibly distressing. The two of them got out of bed and searched the room but found nothing.
I was also very upset and said, "You just had a bad experience at a small hotel; how could you not learn your lesson? Couldn't you have taken her to a big hotel? Have you asked the hotel staff?"
"It's just that I just spent five thousand and wanted to save some money..." Hu Xiaoyi explained quietly. "The hotel staff said no one came in, and there are no cameras here..."
He didn't know what to do, so I thought for a moment and told him to wait there. Then I took a taxi to the hotel. When I entered the room, Qin Zhenzhen looked a bit embarrassed upon seeing me, her face flushed. Normally, I would tease them, but I wasn't in the mood for that now.
More importantly, I originally wanted to see if there were any clues or traces they might have overlooked in the room, but as soon as I entered, I sensed Yin Qi's presence. This Yin Qi came from Qin Zhenzhen; it was weak and didn't feel like possession but more like an aura left behind after a spirit departed.
I frowned and walked over to Qin Zhenzhen, sizing her up. She felt shy under my gaze and couldn't help but want to hide behind Hu Xiaoyi. Hu Xiaoyi widened his eyes and said, "What are you looking at!"
I rolled my eyes and said, "Are you afraid I'll take advantage? There's something wrong with her; it might be related to the bracelet."
"What kind of problem?" The young couple was startled.
I explained about the Yin Qi and asked Qin Zhenzhen if she had come into contact with anything unclean recently. She replied, "No, aside from my guitar and piano, I haven't touched anything else. Yi Ge, could it be that there's something wrong with my instruments again?"
She had been bitten by a snake once and was now afraid of ropes for ten years. I shook my head and said I wasn't sure; it could be or it might not be. But we would only know by checking it out ourselves. Qin Zhenzhen trembled in fear; last time she was left with a large scar on her belly from two evil spirits in her drum set and cried for a long time because of it. Fortunately, Hu Xiaoyi didn't mind; he coaxed her gently and managed to win her over.
Upon hearing that there might be spirits in the instruments, Hu Xiaoyi quickly said, "What are we waiting for? Let's hurry back home and check so that those evil spirits don't cause trouble for your parents."
I hesitated because what he said wasn't impossible. So we took advantage of the weekend to visit Qin Zhenzhen's home. Her parents remembered me; they knew their daughter was doing well thanks to my invitation of an expert last time, so they were exceptionally polite. However, their expressions were quite unnatural when they saw me. I could understand their feelings; having someone who "exorcises spirits" frequently visiting their home couldn't be seen as a good thing.
I realized this and didn't dare to tell the truth, just saying I came here to have some fun. Qin Zhenzhen and Hu Xiaoyi also cooperated well, not revealing the truth. After wandering around her house, I found it very clean. There was no sign of evil spirits, not even a shadow of a ghost.
Qin Zhenzhen finally breathed a sigh of relief, but thinking about the bracelet that was lost after just one day made her sad again. It was clear that she really liked that bracelet. Hu Xiaoyi, having just been affectionate with her, couldn't stand such emotions and immediately patted his chest, saying he would buy her an identical one.
I widened my eyes at once; such a cheap and excellent item is not something you can just stumble upon anywhere!
Qin Zhenzhen understood this logic too and said it was better to forget it; it seemed she was fated to be without good things.
Hu Xiaoyi became anxious and, after returning to school, dragged me to the Jewelry Store. I was both amused and exasperated; this guy seemed to have lost his mind, making me feel both angry and entertained. Hu Xiaoyi knew it wasn't easy to come across such good fortune, so he said to go with the flow; if they couldn't find the same one, they could buy something similar instead, as he had to compensate for his girlfriend's hurt feelings.
I remarked that something worth seventy or eighty thousand yuan was lost overnight; this room must be very expensive, probably up to ten-star standards!
Hu Xiaoyi scratched his head and chuckled but didn't respond. We wandered around the Jewelry Store, seeing the same items as last time, which had low cost-performance ratios. In my opinion, none were worth spending money on. Hu Xiaoyi looked around with disappointment.
I secretly shook my head, contemplating whether to ask Second Uncle to get a similar piece from a jade merchant in Myanmar when I was suddenly stopped by a man. Turning around, I saw someone unfamiliar and asked, "What do you want?"
The man asked darkly, "A few days ago, did you buy a little boy's Jade Bracelet?"
My heart sank; I thought it was bad news—surely the parents had come looking for it. I immediately denied it, saying, "No, what Jade Bracelet?"
The man became anxious and pulled me out of the Jewelry Store, whispering, "Brother, don't hide it from me. To be honest, I also bought that Jade Bracelet and lost it without wearing it for even a day. At first, I thought I just misplaced it, but later when I accompanied my wife to buy a ring, I heard that you bought a Jade Bracelet from that little boy too. Just tell me honestly what that Jade Bracelet looks like."
His tone was urgent yet sincere. After hesitating for a moment without fully considering my response, Hu Xiaoyi revealed everything. After hearing this, the man slapped his thigh and exclaimed, "Oh wow! It really is identical! Looks like we’ve both been scammed!"
I said, "Not necessarily; maybe he had two Jade Bracelets?"
"Impossible!" the man replied confidently.
I wondered how it was possible; in the past, many people wore bracelets in pairs. The man said that after hearing about this matter, he visited many jewelry stores just to find us. To his surprise, when he inquired about the little boy, the staff at those jewelry stores all claimed to have seen such a child and quietly took customers outside for some unknown reason. He went through great lengths to find several of them and learned that they had all purchased the little boy's jade bracelet.
What was even more astonishing was that everyone experienced the same thing: they lost the bracelet after wearing it for just one day!
The man said that if it were one or two people, it could be a coincidence. But with so many people, it couldn't be said that the child had five or six identical bracelets, could it? Even if that were true, how could they all have disappeared overnight?
With that said, I had to believe that Hu Xiaoyi had fallen into someone's trap.
But how could the bracelets have disappeared for no reason? Was that little boy secretly stealing them right behind their backs?
That seemed unlikely because most of those who bought the bracelets lost them at home. If it were at a hotel, perhaps the little boy could bribe a bellboy to open the door, but at home? Was he a professional thief? If that were the case, it could only mean he wasn't alone and likely had a large criminal organization backing him!
The man said he had already arranged with a few others to stake out nearby jewelry stores. As soon as they saw the little boy, they would catch him! He strongly invited us to join their "enforcement" team because there were too many jewelry stores; without more people, they wouldn't be able to keep watch effectively.
I felt there was little hope in this kind of waiting for a rabbit to come by; if that child were truly part of a criminal organization, how could he possibly commit crimes in the same place?
But just because I didn't want to didn't mean Hu Xiaoyi didn't want to. He had been scammed out of five thousand yuan and felt very guilty towards Qin Zhenzhen; he was quite frustrated about it. So he immediately agreed, and the man happily left his contact information, saying they would keep each other informed once there were any discoveries.
After that person left, I glanced at Hu Xiaoyi, who was looking around anxiously, and sighed deeply.
From then on, every day after school, Hu Xiaoyi rushed to the jewelry stores, neglecting even Qin Zhenzhen. As I expected, after a week of waiting around, there was no gain. The little boy seemed to have vanished without a trace. Hu Xiaoyi wondered if there weren't enough people or if they weren't watching the right places. I said it was unlikely because when that man left, he mentioned he would ask staff at other jewelry stores in the city to help keep an eye out. So while not many people had been scammed, there were actually quite a few waiting to catch that boy.
