I said, "Since that's the case, why not trade friendship for some money to spend?" Banrada's expression changed, and he said with a bitter face, "How can our friendship be measured by money... Besides, it's not worth much anyway..."
Seeing his stingy look, I couldn't help but laugh. After chatting for a while, Ajan Dong mentioned he needed to return to the company. These Ajan basically live at the company, and if Second Uncle has business, he will notify them. So returning early might mean getting orders sooner. It sounded like they were treating Ajan like workers. However, Ajan Dong didn't seem to mind.
There are so many Ajan in Thailand that they are everywhere. In recent years, Amulets have gradually gained popularity, and many scammers have even built temples, hiring some mediocre monks to act as High Monks and sell talismans that aren't even legitimate. The Black Robed Mage is already feared by people, so the business of Ajan Masters isn't particularly good either.
But once they come to China, they no longer have to compete; they just sit in the company waiting for business to come to them. Second Uncle has a wide network that allows these Ajan to earn more money than they would in Thailand. Since they can make money, what do they have to complain about?
When Ajan Dong was about to leave, I asked Banrada if he was going with him. He shook his head and said, "I'm not part of the company; why should I go back?"
When I asked where he planned to go next, Banrada said he wanted to wander around the mainland and see what fun things there were. I laughed and said, "With your temperament, you want to make a profit wherever you go. If you say you're going to swindle people, I believe it; but if you say you're going for leisure, I don't buy it."
Banrada unhappily replied, "Am I really that greedy in your eyes?"
I nodded and said yes. Seeing the chubby guy looking angry but unable to retort made me feel completely relieved from the frustration of being scammed earlier. Then I asked him if he had thought about looking for his twin brother Ma Rulong. Banrada thought for a moment and then shook his head. Although he and Ma Rulong looked almost identical, they weren't very familiar with each other—one was in the mainland while the other was in Thailand. One was a Dealer while the other was a Taoist; they were completely different paths.
Sometimes I really don't understand the so-called brotherly bond. Second Uncle and Second Uncle are completely different in appearance and personality yet are separated by two places. But their feelings for each other are very deep; at least I know Second Uncle would do anything for Second Uncle, even risking his life.
Perhaps this is due to different family upbringing? Given Grandpa's personality, he probably wouldn't like brothers turning against each other. It's easy to imagine that Second Uncle and Second Uncle must have been instilled with the idea that unity is strength since childhood.
Banrada took the train alone without saying where he was going. Ajan Dong's train wasn't at the same time as his. While waiting in the station lounge, I received another call from Boss Yin. This time he sounded much more anxious and immediately said, "Brother, please help me!"
A man in his forties calling me brother—I'm classmates with your friend's nephew! But hearing his urgent tone made it clear something serious had happened, so I asked, "What happened? Did you get robbed?"
Boss Yin said, "It's worse than being robbed. Remember that Homeowner I told you about last time—the one who was haunted? Do you remember?"
I replied that I did remember and asked if he wasn't just lying about it not being haunted; how come the Homeowner came knocking again?
Boss Yin sighed heavily and said, "I wish he could have come to find me alive, but he's already dead!"
I was slightly taken aback. Dead?
Boss Yin explained that he only found out about this last night. Homeowner had been watching the workers renovate the house and hadn’t returned home since the afternoon. His wife and children tried calling him but couldn’t get through. When they finally went to the new house and opened the door, they discovered that he was already dead. Moreover, the scene was extremely gruesome; the electrician had used a cutting machine to dig trenches, nearly slicing his entire abdomen in half. His intestines and organs were everywhere.
When Boss Yin received the call, he immediately understood that trouble was brewing. He didn’t dare go to the house himself but called the person who sold him the ghost, hoping that they could come take a look. The person agreed and came by in the middle of the night to take a distant glance without even entering before turning around and leaving. When Boss Yin asked what was going on, the person said, "This is troublesome; it will cost three hundred thousand, or else we won't discuss it further. Don't say I didn't warn you; this house is uninhabitable. If you sell it to someone else, one will die after another!"
Now Boss Yin was genuinely anxious. He had been having nightmares for several days, always dreaming of someone crying and screaming in his ear, saying things like "It hurts! It hurts!" He hadn’t slept well for days, and now such a big incident had occurred.
Some say that matters that can be settled with money aren’t really troubles. But Boss Yin felt that whether money could solve it depended on how much!
Three hundred thousand was almost equivalent to the price of an entire apartment. He was reluctant to spend that much money, so after staying up all night and unable to bear it any longer, he called me again.
I hadn’t expected that the haunting would be so severe that someone actually died. I originally just wanted to mess with Boss Yin for a few days, but now it turned out well—the main person was fine, but an innocent person had died. I felt a bit regretful and said, "This has nothing to do with me; why are you calling? I’m not interested in your problems; I’m still waiting to find someone to buy Male Ghost!"
Boss Yin quickly replied, "Brother, please help me out and see how we can resolve this. I’m begging you; my whole family is counting on this property to survive. If we really can’t sell it, we’ll all jump off a building! As for your Male Ghost, can’t I just buy it?"
I glanced at Ajan Dong, thought for a moment, and said, "I’m a bit busy right now; I’ll call you back when I finish."
With that, I hung up and turned off my phone.
Whether or not Male Ghost would be sold to Boss Yin didn’t matter much; there had been others expressing interest in similar ghosts or spirit cards recently. However, that haunted house piqued my interest. To demand three hundred thousand means it must be quite serious; even if they were asking for an outrageous price, it likely wasn’t an easy situation. I mentioned this to Ajan Dong and asked if he had any way to resolve it.
Ajan Dong said we’d need to see the place first since this is mainland China and quite different from Thailand.
Seeing that he looked somewhat tired, I suggested he shouldn’t rush back just yet and should find a place to rest for half a day first. Ajan Dong nodded in agreement, and then I took him to a hotel where we booked a room. After watching some television and taking a short nap, we only turned on our phones when it was time for lunch in the afternoon. As soon as I powered up my phone, I saw several messages from Boss Yin. They were mostly asking why I had turned off my phone and urging me not to ignore him.
He looked anxious, so I cheerfully called him back. Boss Yin was pleasantly surprised and almost cried.
I said, "Sorry, my phone ran out of battery earlier, and I just had time to charge it after finishing up. By the way, how's everything on your end? Is it a murder or a suicide? It might not necessarily be a haunting, right?"
Boss Yin replied, "Who would commit suicide with a cutting machine? And that little thing—how could you saw yourself all the way around... Ugh, just talking about this makes me feel weak. Please, brother, hurry up and come!"
I felt that I had kept him waiting long enough; it was about time to go. If I delayed any longer, it might backfire. So I said, "Then give me an address, and I'll bring someone over. There's an Ajan Master nearby; I'll take him along to check it out."
Boss Yin was overjoyed and quickly provided the specific address. I looked at the address in the text message and estimated that it would take two to three hours to drive there. Jokingly, I said, "It's a bit far; the gas money will probably cost several hundred."
Without hesitation, Boss Yin patted his chest and said, "I'll reimburse you two thousand for gas!"
I laughed and stopped pretending. Ajan Dong had already rested well and looked much better than before. As we drove to Boss Yin's city, it was completely dark by the time we arrived. Boss Yin was waiting near his building, his legs sore from standing. When he finally saw me, he hurried over.
He said the police had sealed off the scene and left someone to guard it. However, he had used his connections to get the officer on duty to leave temporarily.
I chuckled and said, "You're openly bribing them."
Boss Yin grimaced and replied, "Come on, brother, don't joke around; I'm about to go crazy."
As we chatted, we walked into the newly built complex. Boss Yin pointed at one of the buildings in the distance and said, "That's the one!"
