For Fat Daoist and Ma Rulong, over the ten years of their relationship, the master became a true mentor. He did not teach him much, nor did he provide him with the wealth he deserved, but he taught Ma Rulong to prioritize the welfare of all living beings!
This alone is worthy of respect!
That night, as thunder roared in the sky and heavy rain fell from the heavens, the master departed from this world. He lay on his bed, looking at the disciple who was kneeling on the ground, not quite a disciple, and smiled as he closed his eyes.
Ma Rulong cried out loudly; he had never felt such sorrow before. The master's passing left him heartbroken. To his surprise, when the disciples moved to prepare the master's body for burial, they discovered he was holding a compass in his hand. On the compass lay a piece of paper that read: "This compass is to be given to Ma Rulong; it is imperative that he upholds justice and accumulates virtue!"
Clearly, before passing away, the master anticipated that Ma Rulong would agree to fulfill his last wish. Thus, he gave money to those disciples but left the compass for Ma Rulong. The master's final command was one that no one dared to disobey. When Ma Rulong received the compass from his senior brothers, he cried again and bowed deeply before the master's body.
A few days later, after completing the master's funeral rites, the brothers each went their separate ways. They expressed their concern for Ma Rulong, saying that if he encountered any difficulties in the future, he could always seek them out. Although the master had never officially accepted him as a disciple, in their hearts, he was considered their little brother.
Previously, Ma Rulong harbored resentment towards his brothers for leaving so soon after the master's death; it felt too cold-hearted. However, upon hearing their unanimous words of support, he could not voice any complaints. Being recognized by the Daoist temple was something he had longed for all his life, and now it had finally come to pass.
Thus, in this dilapidated Daoist temple on Luo Fu Mountain, the true masters had departed, and an outsider moved in.
Holding the compass in hand, day after day and year after year, he diligently worked to fulfill his grand aspirations. Through numerous Extradition Ceremonies, Ma Rulong gradually understood that the master left him this compass not for geomancy or feng shui purposes but to suppress those malevolent spirits.
This was not the most powerful magical artifact in the temple, but it played an irreplaceable role in Extradition Ceremonies.
Years later, with nothing to do at the temple, Ma Rulong began trying to descend the mountain to make a living. When the master was alive, there were still believers who would come up to offer food and money. Now that several years had passed since his master’s death and only he remained as a laborer in the temple, naturally, they stopped coming. To fill his stomach, Ma Rulong had no choice but to help people exorcise spirits under the guise of being a Daoist Priest.
Whether it was Longhu Mountain's Talismans or Mao Shan Sect's techniques, Ma Rulong only had a superficial understanding of them. His greatest reliance was this compass in his hand. With it by his side, he felt confident that he could face anything!
At this point in his story, I interrupted him with irritation and said: "If that compass is so powerful, why don’t you ascend to heaven?"
Ma Rulong was taken aback, and after a moment of staring in disbelief, he said dejectedly, "It was taken by that ghost."
"Ah?" I exclaimed in surprise.
As mentioned earlier, part of the talismans on the wooden board had been repaired by Master using Gold Paint. For over a decade, there had been no issues, and Ma Rulong had never given it much thought. However, one night while he was preparing for the Extradition Ceremony, he suddenly sensed an overwhelming Yin Qi outside the temple. When he rushed out to check, he was stunned to see several Yin Spirits emerging from beneath the wooden board. Upon seeing him, they quickly vanished without a trace.
The Yin Spirits suppressed in that place were mostly malevolent. Master's last wish was that all evil spirits causing trouble in the human realm must be brought forth for exorcism to ensure peace for humanity.
So even if just a few Evil Spirits escaped, it could disturb many people. Frustrated and anxious, Ma Rulong ran back inside to grab his compass. He wanted to chase after those Evil Spirits, but he feared it might be too late. Moreover, he was puzzled as to how the Evil Spirits could escape despite the Golden Curse suppressing them on the board.
As he pondered this, he inexplicably crouched down and lifted a part of the wooden board. As soon as he did so, everything went dark before his eyes, and he felt weightless before crashing to the ground.
The compass rolled around on the ground for a few moments before Ma Rulong looked up and was horrified to find himself in some unknown Ghost Land. Before he could get back on his feet, a gust of cold wind suddenly swept away his compass.
Panicking, he chased after it but ended up bumping into something in the darkness.
He fumbled around for quite some time and eventually began to realize that he seemed to have entered an underground storage area for Evil Spirits. The earthen walls around him and the ground beneath often felt like they were lined with altars. When he opened one and reached inside, it was filled with ash. Surrounding the altars were various everyday items. Clearly, these were urns for ashes and burial goods.
Ma Rulong was utterly dumbfounded; how could lifting a wooden board lead him here?
He couldn't figure out what had happened and desperately wanted to find a way out and retrieve his compass. But after an unknown amount of time without finding an exit, he unexpectedly encountered Master. Master emerged from the darkness calling his name. Having not seen Master for many years, Ma Rulong felt nostalgic and rushed over. However, Master immediately struck him repeatedly before vanishing without a trace.
Ma Rulong was confused about what was happening and felt quite wronged. He thought to himself that even if Master had turned into a ghost, he shouldn't hit him. Was it because he lost the compass?
Just then, another person walked in—it was none other than Qin Senior Sister and Zheng Xuejie. Their experience was far more terrifying than mine or Ma Rulong's.
The two had come together and naturally couldn't find Ma Rulong in the temple. Initially, Qin Senior Sister wanted to leave and stay overnight at the foot of the mountain, but Zheng Xuejie complained about being too tired from climbing and suggested they simply spend the night at the temple instead. Since Qin Senior Sister preferred going along with others' wishes, she didn't oppose much; after all, there were beds and blankets in the temple so they wouldn't freeze.
That night, strange noises suddenly echoed through the temple. Qin Senior Sister went to the main hall and found Zheng Xuejie bowing at the offering table. Not understanding what was happening, she approached to call out to Zheng Xuejie. However, Zheng Xuejie suddenly turned around with a cold expression and pushed her down before dragging her outside.
Qin Senior Sister was so frightened that she didn't know what to do and could only struggle desperately. However, Zheng Xuejie was incredibly strong, and she couldn't break free. After being dragged not far from the temple, she felt a sudden lightness all over her body and then fell here.
After landing, she realized that Zheng Xuejie was already gone. She waited in place for a long time before gathering the courage to move forward, and then she encountered Fat Daoist Ma Rulong.
Both were somewhat pleased to see each other, but when they started asking questions, they both felt deflated. They had entered in the same way, but neither knew how to get out. More importantly, they had lost Zheng Xuejie.
Just as they were talking, Qin Senior Sister suddenly heard Zheng Xuejie calling her name. She took out her phone to illuminate the area and saw Zheng Xuejie approaching with a weak expression, asking where they were and what had happened. Qin Senior Sister thought that Zheng Xuejie must have been enchanted earlier; otherwise, she wouldn't have acted so strangely! So, she walked over with Ma Rulong, intending to explain to Zheng Xuejie.
However, when they got closer, Zheng Xuejie suddenly slapped her phone out of her hand and began punching and kicking at both of them. Qin Senior Sister was relatively fine, only being pushed a few times, but Ma Rulong took the brunt of it, with all of Zheng Xuejie's punches aimed at his face. The two of them were confused about the situation and didn't dare retaliate. After enduring for a while, Ma Rulong finally snapped and said, "If you hit me again, I'm going to fight back!"
Zheng Xuejie emitted an extremely strange sound that was definitely not her voice, and then she vanished like smoke.
Qin Senior Sister was so scared that she sat down on the ground, while Ma Rulong was stunned because the scene of Zheng Xuejie disappearing was exactly like what had happened with his master. Was this just a coincidence?
Both of them had taken an inexplicable beating and felt utterly bewildered.
After some time passed, someone approached from another direction. Judging by his appearance, he was one of Ma Rulong's senior brothers. The senior brother looked furious and scolded Ma Rulong for daring to trespass into a forbidden area! Since he had always been afraid of his seniors since childhood, Ma Rulong timidly refrained from arguing back. Unexpectedly, as the senior brother reached him, he delivered another round of heavy blows. After finishing, he let out a strange laugh and disappeared again.
This time, Ma Rulong finally realized that whatever master or senior brother it was—none of it was real!
There must be an Evil Spirit!
