"So, you called me just for this?" I tried to keep my tone calm, but inside, I was a storm of emotions.
"Yes, I've always felt that if you owe someone a thank you, you should say it in person." Song Xingchen's voice was sincere and warm, like the gentle sun on a winter day, filling me with warmth.
"Actually... it's nothing much, just a small favor," I lowered my head, my fingers tightly twisting the edge of my pajamas, unable to suppress a smile as my body swayed slightly, resembling a shy young bride.
"It may be a small favor to you, but it means a lot to me." Song Xingchen paused for a moment, as if weighing his words. "So, I want to... thank you in person. Is that okay?"
My breath caught in my throat, and my heart raced. Thanking me in person? Does that mean I'm about to see him?
The boy I had secretly admired throughout my youth was now a celebrated idol, while I... was just an ordinary office worker.
Between us lay the vast river of time and the gap of our identities.
"I..." I opened my mouth, but my throat felt blocked, unsure how to respond.
"If it's not convenient for you right now, that's fine. Just contact me whenever you're free. This is my personal number; I've never changed it." Song Xingchen's voice remained gentle, as if he could sense my current anxiety and hesitation.
"Okay..." I replied softly, feeling the palm holding the phone start to sweat slightly.
After hanging up the phone, I sat there in a daze, my thoughts swirling. Should I agree to meet him? If I did agree, how would I face him? A series of questions spun in my mind, leaving me feeling dizzy.
At that moment, my phone rang again. I picked it up and saw it was Lin Xiaoxiao calling. A headache began to form.
Having been best friends for over ten years, I knew what she was going to say—she would want to take me to a bar to see some male model sing or introduce me to potential boyfriends.
But like me, she was perpetually single and only dared to talk about it.
"Hey, Xiaoxiao, if you're going to introduce me to a male model, you can skip it," I answered the call with a weak voice.
"Ahhh! My dear Yue! Guess what?" Lin Xiaoxiao's voice was as high-pitched as ever, filled with excitement. "I just saw Song Xingchen's Weibo! He said he’s looking for someone who helped him win a singing competition in high school and mentioned that without that person, he wouldn't be who he is today. Could he be talking about you?"
I hesitated for a moment and shyly replied, "He already called me."
"What?!" Lin Xiaoxiao's voice shot up an octave as if she had heard some earth-shattering secret. "Is that true? What did he say?"
"He said..." I took a deep breath and briefly recounted the conversation with Song Xingchen to Lin Xiaoxiao.
"Oh my gosh!" Lin Xiaoxiao exclaimed after hearing my story, her excitement making her speechless. "This is straight out of an idol drama! You've had a crush on him for so many years, and now he's actively reaching out to you and wants to thank you in person! How romantic!"
"Stop it!" I interrupted her playfully while feeling sweetly flustered inside. "What romance?"
"You used to say 'my Xingchen is the most handsome' and 'my Xingchen is such a good boy.' Now why aren't you admitting it?" My best friend teased relentlessly.
"Stop messing around, I'm no longer that naive little girl from back then." I sighed helplessly; reality is not a fairy tale, and there are too many obstacles between Song Xingchen and me.
"Why do you have so little confidence?" Lin Xiaoxiao said, exasperated. "You were the belle of our Veterinary Medicine College in college; there were so many people chasing after you that they could line up at the school gate. What are you afraid of?"
"By the way, you still have a child, right? Tangyuan is so adorable; how can you bear for him to grow up without a father?"
"..."
Thinking of Tangyuan, a wave of tenderness surged in my heart.
