The alarm clock rang at ten twenty, but the person under the blanket showed no signs of waking up. I sighed; it seemed I had drunk quite a bit last night.
I got up and walked to the window, pulling back the curtains to look at the light rain outside, which calmed my mood considerably.
"Are you awake?" A deep voice came from behind me. I turned around to meet his profound eyes. "Hmm, what time is it?"
"It's ten thirty. Your phone is dead; do you need to contact anyone?" He handed me a cup of warm water, which I accepted with a thank you.
"No need. Did I... say anything to you when I was drunk last night?" Some fragments flashed through my mind, but they were all unclear; I only remembered that I seemed to have said a lot of nonsense.
"You asked me to marry you." He stepped closer, his tone calm, but I could detect a hint of barely concealed tension.
My heart skipped a beat, and my cheeks instantly flushed hot. "I..."
"I agreed."
Yu Wan's mind went blank; she completely did not remember saying such things and felt so embarrassed that she wished she could find a hole to hide in. "I... I was drunk; don’t..." she stammered, her hands fidgeting together helplessly.
Chi Jinze looked at her awkwardness and couldn't help but chuckle softly as he walked over and ruffled her hair. "Just kidding, don’t be nervous; I didn’t take it to heart."
Yu Wan finally relaxed a little, awkwardly smiling as she took a sip from the cup.
"What are you two talking about? So happy." A charming female voice came from the doorway. Yu Wan and Chi Jinze turned their heads simultaneously to see Sophia walking in wearing a red long dress and high heels, an enigmatic smile on her face.
"Nothing much, just chatting," Chi Jinze replied casually, his tone revealing no emotion.
"Sophia, what brings you here?" Yu Wan stood up, subtly distancing herself from Chi Jinze while politely asking.
"I came to see Jinze; what’s wrong? Am I not welcome?" Sophia walked over and sat beside the sofa, elegantly crossing her legs while her gaze remained fixed on Chi Jinze.
"How could that be? We're very happy you could come." Yu Wan forced a smile, but inside she felt a hint of unease. The relationship between Sophia and Chi Jinze seemed unusual, and the way Sophia looked at her carried an indescribable hostility.
"I have some matters to attend to, so I'll head to the study first." Chi Jinze seemed to sense the subtle shift in the atmosphere and stood up to walk toward the study, leaving Yu Wan and Sophia alone. Sophia watched Chi Jinze's departing figure, a barely noticeable cold smile curling at the corners of her mouth. She then turned to Yu Wan, a glint of cunning flashing in her eyes.
"By the way, Yu Wan, I heard that Jinze once promised a girl he would give her a grand wedding. Is that true?" Sophia asked casually, though her tone held an undertone of probing.
Yu Wan's heart sank; Sophia's words pierced her like a thorn, hitting the softest spot in her heart. She feigned calmness and smiled, "Is that so? I'm not sure, after all, I haven't been with Jinze for long."
"That makes sense. A girl like you who lacks security must care about these things," Sophia said with a light laugh, but there was a hint of mockery in the fine lines around her eyes.
Yu Wan tightened her grip on the cup slightly, her nails turning white. She struggled to suppress the turmoil within and calmly retorted, "Relationships are between two people; security comes from oneself and has nothing to do with others."
"Is that so? Then I can rest easy," Sophia raised an eyebrow, her tone laden with meaning.
Just then, Chi Jinze emerged from the study and saw Sophia getting ready to leave. He stepped forward and asked coldly, "Sophia, is there something you need today?"
"Can't I come to see an old friend if there's nothing else?" Sophia replied with a light laugh, her gaze carrying a hint of provocation.
Chi Jinze frowned slightly and said firmly, "Sophia, you know that's not what I meant."
"I'm just here to see you; after all, it's been a while," Sophia said as she reached out to touch Chi Jinze's arm but was subtly evaded by him.
"Sophia, I hope you understand that between you and me, it's just a thing of the past." Chi Jinze's tone was cold, and there was not a hint of warmth in his eyes. Sophia's hand froze in mid-air, her expression slightly changed before she regained her smile. "Jinze, you're still so heartless." She withdrew her hand and turned to walk towards the door. As she passed by Yu Wan, she paused and leaned in to whisper in her ear, "Do you really think you can win his heart? Don't be naive; he's just playing around."
Chi Jinze noticed Sophia's little gesture and stepped forward, pulling Yu Wan behind him, his gaze sharp as he looked at Sophia. "Sophia, that's enough!"
