"What's wrong? Did I say something wrong? Are you really going to claim that you are not with her because of her family background?" Sophia fearlessly met Chi Jinze's gaze, her tone sharp as she retorted.
Yu Wan, who had been silent all along, turned pale at Sophia's words. She bit her lip hard, trying to control her trembling body, but tears still flowed uncontrollably down her cheeks. She suddenly pushed Chi Jinze away, turned, and ran into the room, slamming the door shut behind her.
Chi Jinze watched Yu Wan's retreating figure with a heavy heart. He turned and glared at Sophia, "You have gone too far!"
"I just spoke the truth; why deceive yourself?" Sophia sneered and turned to leave.
"Sophia, stop right there!" Lu Ningyan, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke up, his tone icy and his gaze sharp as a blade aimed directly at Sophia. Sophia was momentarily stunned by Lu Ningyan's intensity; her steps faltered, but she did not turn back and walked straight out of the room, slamming the door heavily behind her.
The loud bang echoed in the empty room, shattering what little rationality remained in Chi Jinze. He clenched his fists, his expression dark and terrifying as he turned and walked toward the study.
Bang—Chi Jinze slammed the study door shut.
Chi Jinze quickly walked to Yu Wan's door and gently knocked. "Wanwan, it's me. Can you open the door? Let me come in and explain."
Silence filled the room, broken only by muffled sobs that came intermittently. Chi Jinze felt as if an invisible hand was tightly gripping his heart, increasing his worry for Yu Wan's state. He grasped the doorknob and tried to turn it but found it locked from the inside.
"Wanwan, don't do this. Listen to me; things are not as Sophia said..." Chi Jinze's tone grew anxious as he let his hand drop weakly. The veins on the back of his hand bulged, revealing his inner turmoil and unease.
He leaned against the door panel and slowly slid down to the floor, covering his face with his hands. His mind replayed Sophia's words from before she left, as well as Yu Wan's injured expression, filling him with guilt and heartache.
Inside the room, Yu Wan was leaning against the door, her arms wrapped around her knees, burying her head deeply in her arms. Sophia's sharp and bitter words felt like knives, ruthlessly tearing at her heart and making her already fragile sense of security even more unstable.
She recalled the moments spent with Chi Jinze; those sweet memories now turned into the greatest irony for her. Was she really just a toy for him to fill his emptiness? With this thought, Yu Wan's tears surged even more, soaking her clothes.
"Wan Wan, I know you're inside. Open the door. Don't keep everything bottled up. Let's talk face to face, okay?" Chi Jinze's voice came from outside the door, tinged with fatigue and pleading.
He stood up and gently knocked on the door, his tone soft yet firm: "Trust me, I am sincere about you. Sophia's words are meant to sow discord between us; don't believe her."
Listening to Chi Jinze's words, Yu Wan felt a mix of emotions. How she wished she could believe him, but Sophia's words were like a thorn, deeply embedded in her heart, making it impossible to ignore.
After a long while, Yu Wan slowly stood up and walked to the door. Taking a deep breath, she gradually opened it.
Chi Jinze saw Yu Wan's swollen eyes and felt a pang of pain in his heart. He reached out to embrace her but was evaded by Yu Wan.
