"Sophia!" Lu Ningyan suddenly stood up and walked in front of Sophia, his tone icy. "That's enough! Stop talking nonsense!"
Lu Ningyan's sudden outburst caught Sophia off guard. She took a step back, but her tone still carried a hint of disdain. "Am I talking nonsense? Did I say something wrong? This ring, it clearly was..."
"Enough!" Chi Jinze abruptly stood up, sharply interrupting Sophia. He positioned himself protectively behind Yu Wan, his gaze cold as he stared at Sophia. "I'll say it again: this ring is a family heirloom. Now, I am giving it to Wan Wan because she is the woman I love most in this life!"
Sophia's expression changed, disbelief washing over her as she looked at Chi Jinze, her eyes gradually reddening. Chi Jinze ignored Sophia and turned to Yu Wan with a gentle look, his eyes filled with determination and affection. He picked up the ring and placed it back on Yu Wan's ring finger, speaking softly yet firmly, "Wan Wan, don't be afraid. I believe in you."
Yu Wan looked at Chi Jinze, her eyes also glistening with tears. She nodded and grasped Chi Jinze's hand, their fingers intertwining.
Sophia took a deep breath, trying to suppress the anger and jealousy within her. She forced a smile that dripped with sarcasm. "Alright then! Chi Jinze, you are ruthless!" With that, she spun around and left the villa in her high heels, the sound of her heels clicking against the floor echoing like a hammer striking Yu Wan's heart. The room was left with only Yu Wan and Chi Jinze, along with the silent Lu Ningyan.
Silence spread throughout the room as Yu Wan remained lost in her emotions. She looked down at the ring on her finger, a mix of feelings swelling within her—gratitude, unease, and confusion about the future. Chi Jinze gazed at Yu Wan and gently stroked her hair, softly saying, "Wan Wan, don't worry; I've got everything under control."
Yu Wan lifted her head to look at Chi Jinze; the unease and questions in her eyes had not faded. "Jinze, that ring..." She hesitated, recalling Sophia's earlier words; her mind felt tangled like a mess of threads that wouldn't settle.
Chi Jinze gently pulled Yu Wan into his embrace, his tone tender yet resolute. "Wan Wan, you don't need to take Sophia's words to heart. I did intend to give this ring to someone very important to me before, but now that person is you."
Yu Wan nodded lightly and buried her head into Chi Jinze's chest, listening to his strong heartbeat as she sought comfort from him. Chi Jinze softly patted Yu Wan's back as if soothing a frightened fawn.
Lu Ningyan watched the two tightly embraced together and wisely stood up. "It's getting late; I should head back now. You two should get some rest." After patting Chi Jinze on the shoulder, he turned and left the villa, leaving the couple in their own world.
Chi Jinze looked down at Yu Wan in his arms and gently asked, "Wan Wan, shall we go out to the balcony to see the stars?" Yu Wan nodded lightly and allowed Chi Jinze to lead her toward the balcony. Outside on the balcony, a gentle night breeze carried a hint of early summer warmth; the distant city lights flickered like stars against the night sky.
At that moment, Sophia sat in her car. She picked up her phone and dialed a number. "Hello? How is everything going?" Her tone was icy, completely different from how she had been in the villa moments before.
"Don't worry, Miss Sophia, the photos have been sent anonymously to Miss Yu Wan as you instructed," a flattering male voice came from the other end of the phone.
Sophia curled her lips into a cold smile, a hint of malice flashing in her eyes. "Good. Remember, leave no traces."
"Understood, Miss Sophia."
After hanging up the phone, Sophia gazed out at the flickering neon lights, a smug smile creeping onto her face. Chi Jinze, Yu Wan, this isn't over yet!
...
The next morning, when Yu Wan woke up, Chi Jinze had already left. Habitually, she picked up her phone to check for messages from him but was surprised to find a multimedia message from an unknown number.
Yu Wan opened the message and was instantly stunned by the photo. The woman in the picture had long wavy hair and was wearing a red dress; it was none other than Sophia, whom she had seen at the villa yesterday. And the man in the photo? Who else but Chi Jinze?! In the picture, Chi Jinze and Sophia were close together, laughing and chatting, their proximity so intimate that one could almost feel their breaths mingling.
In that moment, Yu Wan felt as if her heart was being tightly gripped by an invisible hand, making it nearly impossible for her to breathe. The images and emotions she had deliberately suppressed surged back to the forefront of her mind, Sophia's words echoing in her ears:
"This ring was originally meant to be a token of love from Jinze to me!"
"What? Are you planning to accept something that someone else has discarded?"
Yu Wan felt a wave of dizziness wash over her; her phone slipped from her hand and fell onto the soft carpet with a faint thud.
When Chi Jinze returned to the villa, he found Yu Wan sitting on the sofa in the living room, her face pale and her eyes vacant, like a doll that had lost its soul. A sense of foreboding gripped his heart.
"Wanwan, what's wrong?" He hurried to Yu Wan's side, crouching down with an anxious and concerned tone.
Yu Wan heard Chi Jinze's voice and slowly raised her head to look at him, her expression complex and hard to read. Chi Jinze's heart sank; he noticed that Yu Wan was tightly gripping something, her knuckles turning white and the veins on the back of her hand bulging.
Chi Jinze followed Yu Wan's gaze and saw the phone on the carpet, the screen displaying a close-up photo of him and Sophia.
"Wanwan, let me explain. It's not what you think..." Chi Jinze tried to explain, but found his voice extremely dry.
"Not what I think? Then what is it?" Yu Wan interrupted him, her tone calm but unable to hide the tremor in her voice. "Chi Jinze, how long are you going to keep lying to me?"
Chi Jinze felt as if his heart had been pierced by a needle, an unbearable pain coursing through him. "Wanwan, I'm not lying to you. Sophia and I are just..."
"Just what? Just ordinary friends? Just work partners?" Yu Wan interrupted him again, her tone filled with sarcasm. "Chi Jinze, do you take me for a fool?"
Yu Wan's words left Chi Jinze speechless. He opened his mouth but didn't know how to explain. He knew that no matter what he said now would be futile; the photo of Sophia was like a thorn deeply embedded in Yu Wan's heart.
"Just go away. I don't want to see you anymore." Yu Wan closed her eyes, tears streaming down from the corners of her eyes.
Chi Jinze looked at Yu Wan with a pained heart; he knew that Sophia had achieved her goal.
"Yu Wan!" Lu Ningyan, who had been silent until now, suddenly spoke up, his tone filled with anger. He grabbed Yu Wan and glared at Chi Jinze. "We're leaving!"
Lu Ningyan pulled Yu Wan away without looking back, leaving Chi Jinze standing alone in place, his heart feeling as if it were being cut apart.
