Chi Jinze watched as Yu Wan and Lu Ningyan walked away, his hands falling helplessly to his sides. The photo slipped from his fingertips and landed on the carpet with a soft thud, yet it felt like a heavy blow to his heart. He knew that explanations were useless at this point and would only escalate the conflict. Taking a deep breath, he forced himself to calm down. Sophia, I will make you pay for what you did today!
The scene shifted back to Lu Ningyan's car, where Yu Wan leaned against the window, her gaze vacant as she stared at the passing scenery. Her mind replayed the intimate photos of Chi Jinze and Sophia over and over, and her heart felt as if it were being torn apart.
"Don't think about it; you still have me!" Lu Ningyan said, freeing one hand to gently pat Yu Wan's shoulder in comfort.
Yu Wan turned to look at Lu Ningyan, her eyes red but holding back tears. She forced a smile and said, "Thank you, Ningyan. I'm fine."
"Fool, don't say you're fine when your eyes are swollen," Lu Ningyan said, looking at Yu Wan with concern as she handed her a tissue. "If you want to cry, just let it out; holding it in isn't good for your health."
Yu Wan took the tissue and gently wiped away the tears at the corners of her eyes, her voice choked as she said, "I just don't understand why he would do this to me. What did I do wrong?"
"Stop blaming yourself; it's not your fault. That man is just too despicable!" Lu Ningyan said indignantly. "A playboy like him isn't worth your sadness!"
Yu Wan fell silent, recalling the moments she shared with Chi Jinze—his tenderness, his affection. Was it all fake? Yet in the photos, he looked so happy and natural, without a hint of pretense.
"Ningyan, do you think he ever really loved me?" Yu Wan murmured, her tone filled with confusion and helplessness.
"Wanwan, don't think about it; he will regret it!" Lu Ningyan didn't directly answer Yu Wan's question but squeezed her hand tightly to give her strength.
Meanwhile, Chi Jinze returned to his study and dialed a number. "Help me investigate someone—Sophia. I want all her information; the more detailed, the better."
"Young Master, are there any other instructions?" A respectful voice came from the other end of the phone.
"Send a few people to secretly protect Miss Yu's safety. Report to me immediately if anything happens," Chi Jinze added, a hint of unnoticeable worry in his tone.
"Yes, Young Master," the person on the other end replied respectfully.
He turned and walked to his desk, pulled out a chair, and sat down. He took out a document from the drawer and carefully flipped through it. It was information about Sophia. Chi Jinze's fingertips lightly glided over the paper, his brow furrowed, and his eyes revealed a trace of coldness.
Meanwhile, Lu Ningyan was driving Yu Wan home. "Wanwan, don't think too much. You still have me; I will always be by your side." Lu Ningyan glanced at Yu Wan and slowed down the car.
Yu Wan forced a smile. "Thank you, Ningyan. I'm sorry for worrying you." She lowered her head, looking at the message Chi Jinze had sent on her phone, feeling a mix of emotions.
"Why are you being so polite with me?" Lu Ningyan freed one hand and gently patted Yu Wan's shoulder. "What do you want to eat? I'll take you."
Yu Wan shook her head. "I'm not hungry; I just want to go home and rest for a bit."
Lu Ningyan nodded and didn't say anything more, focusing on driving.
The car drove smoothly down the road, and the interior was quiet. Yu Wan gazed out at the passing scenery, lost in thought.
"We've arrived." Lu Ningyan stopped the car and turned to Yu Wan.
Yu Wan came back to her senses. "Thank you, Ningyan." She unbuckled her seatbelt, pushed open the car door, and got out.
Lu Ningyan also got out of the car. "Let me walk you up."
Yu Wan shook her head. "No need, just drive safely on your way back."
Lu Ningyan watched Yu Wan enter the apartment building before turning to leave.
