I forced an awkward smile, turned to the side, and gestured for Bai Xiaolian to come inside. "It's late at night, why is it like this? Come in, don't just stand at the door."
Bai Xiaolian lowered her head, her shoulders trembling slightly as if she was still sobbing. She dragged her heavy footsteps into the room, and I noticed she was holding a delicate little suitcase.
"Wang Jie... he has changed..." Bai Xiaolian sat on the sofa, her hands tightly twisting the hem of her dress, her voice choked with emotion. "He used to be so obedient to me, but ever since he got into gambling, he often loses his temper with me and says... says I'm a burden to him..."
"Has he... has he hit you?" I asked cautiously, my gaze falling on her hand that was gripping the suitcase tightly.
Bai Xiaolian looked up at me with tear-filled eyes and nodded gently. "Last night, he went gambling again... lost a lot of money... when he came back, he exploded at me and... and hit me..."
"That's outrageous!" I pretended to be angry and slammed my hand on the table. "How could he treat you like that? You... you weren't hurt, were you?"
Bai Xiaolian shook her head, but tears streamed down her face again. "I... I packed my things today and moved out... he... he didn't even try to keep me..."
At this point, Bai Xiaolian broke down in tears. I handed her a few tissues but felt a deep sense of confusion. Her story seemed reasonable on the surface, but something felt off.
The night grew late, and I made an excuse about needing to work, arranging for Bai Xiaolian to rest in the guest room. Lying in bed, I found it impossible to sleep. Bai Xiaolian's story, that bloody dagger, and Wang Jie's gruesome death kept intertwining in my mind. I realized that I might have inadvertently become embroiled in a meticulously planned conspiracy.
For my own safety and to uncover the truth, I decided to use my deductive skills to secretly investigate the truth behind Wang Jie's death while carefully probing Bai Xiaolian for inconsistencies in her words. I got up, opened my computer, and began organizing all the information about Wang Jie and Bai Xiaolian...

I opened my computer and started searching online for everything related to Wang Jie. As a somewhat famous second-generation rich kid, Wang Jie's name frequently appeared in various entertainment news and gossip forums. I quickly browsed through the pages, trying to piece together the real trajectory of Wang Jie's life from these fragmented bits of information.
Aside from the tabloid news, I also discovered that Wang Jie was addicted to gambling and had accumulated a massive debt. There were even people online publicly demanding repayment, threatening to make him "pay for his father's debts." I clicked on one of the links and found it led to an underground casino website. The site recorded Wang Jie's gambling history, and judging by the amounts, he had lost quite a significant sum.
"Could it be that Wang Jie was silenced because he couldn't repay his enormous gambling debts?" I muttered to myself, my fingers flying over the keyboard as I tried to find more clues.
At that moment, a familiar black suitcase caught my eye. It was the suitcase that Bai Xiaolian had brought, now quietly lying in the corner of the guest room. I hesitated for a moment but couldn't resist walking over.
Taking a deep breath, I opened the suitcase. Inside, neatly arranged were a few pieces of clothing and some feminine items; nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Just as I was about to close the suitcase, a document folder caught my attention.
I opened the folder and was shocked to find it contained a beneficiary change document for an insurance policy, with none other than Bai Xiaolian listed as the beneficiary!
