The next day, Christmas, Su Wan went to the Fu Residence early to make up for yesterday's lesson with Ye Fan. Fu Weiheng had prepared a piano for her at the Fu Residence, so she didn't have the burden of carrying her own instrument. She walked briskly and arrived at the Fu Residence just after eleven.
Fu Weijin had gotten up early and was currently in the Piano Room accompanying Ye Fan as she practiced the piano. The living room was empty, but sounds of cooking could be heard from the kitchen, likely Aunt Lin preparing lunch. Hearing the piano music, Su Wan changed her shoes and headed to the Piano Room.
Ye Fan was playing a short etude while Fu Weijin sat leisurely in a chair by the window, reading a book.
As soon as Su Wan reached the door of the Piano Room, Ye Fan quickly spotted her and sweetly called out, "Auntie!"
Fu Weijin looked up in surprise, "Guan Guan is here? So early today?"
Su Wan felt a bit shy at Ye Fan's call of "Auntie," nodded slightly, and walked in. "Well... I thought I'd come early to give Fan Fan her lesson. Since it's Christmas today, we could actually take a week off."
Fu Weijin put his book down on the chair and stood up to pull her over. "We can't let her take a week off. Recently, Fan Fan hasn't been very motivated in practicing; if we stop for a week, she'll be even more distracted."
Su Wan thought this made sense and nodded as she set down her backpack. "Shall we start now?"
"Now?" Fu Weijin glanced at his watch and considered for a moment before saying, "It's just past eleven, Guan Guan. Do you have anything else to do today?"
Su Wan shook her head.
Fu Weijin said, "Then let's have lunch first before starting the lesson?"
"That works," Su Wan replied.
Fu Weijin led her to the stairs. "Neil is in his study; go call him down while I check if lunch is ready."
Su Wan readily agreed and headed upstairs.
The study door was slightly ajar. Su Wan gently pushed it open and saw scattered sheets of music spread across the table. The Stradivarius lay quietly on the daybed, with a black music stand beside it holding an old copy of Paganini's 24 Caprices. The study was somewhat messy; she looked around but did not see its owner despite noticing his phone still on the table.
Su Wan wasn't in a hurry; she casually picked up the book of Paganini and flipped through it.
Every page of the book was filled with notes, detailing every section, every musical phrase, including each dynamic and emotional nuance.
Su Wan was reading intently, completely unaware of the footsteps approaching from behind.
Suddenly, she felt a warmth at her waist as a pair of hands wrapped around her from behind, a warm body pressing against her back. Su Wan instinctively turned her head, her soft lips brushing against Fu Weiheng's chin resting on her shoulder.
"When did you arrive?" Fu Weiheng relaxed his grip slightly, leaning forward to pull her closer.
Su Wan let out a light laugh due to the unexpected moment. "I just got here not long ago."
Fu Weiheng straightened up and turned her around in his embrace, leaning down to kiss her lips. "Why didn't you wait for me to pick you up?"
Su Wan's voice was gentle. "I was afraid it would be hard for you."
Fu Weiheng held her cold hands and frowned slightly. "Why are your hands so cold?"
Su Wan retracted her hands and squeezed them together. "Um, it's a bit chilly today."
"I'll get you a cup of hot water," Fu Weiheng said.
Su Wan nodded as she watched him turn and head into the small tea room. She picked up the music sheets again, feeling a bit bored.
Suddenly, the phone on the table vibrated. Su Wan looked up from the sheets and saw "Ms. Mu" flashing on the screen. She leaned toward the tea room and called out, "Neil, your phone is ringing."
Fu Weiheng had just finished boiling water; the kettle clicked off while still bubbling. He was washing a cup and replied casually, "Can you answer it for me?"
Su Wan paused for a moment, put down the music sheets, picked up the phone, and pressed answer. In a soft and delicate voice, she said, "Hello, this is Fu Weiheng's phone. He is currently unavailable to take calls."
There was a brief silence on the other end before a somewhat surprised female voice responded, "Are you Guan Guan?"
Su Wan was taken aback. "Who are you...?"
The voice on the other end carried a hint of laughter: "I am Neil's mother."
Su Wan: "..."
Su Wan suddenly stiffened, her nervousness making her words somewhat clumsy: "Ah... Hello, Auntie."
"There's no need to be nervous." Mu Qing chuckled lightly, her voice melodious like a mountain spring, "I often hear Wei Jin mention you. I will be returning to the country with Neil's father next month, and I would like Neil to bring you back for a meal together."
Su Wan felt awkward; was she really going to meet the parents now...
Fu Weiheng walked out holding a cup of hot water. Hearing the movement, Su Wan quickly turned to look at Fu Weiheng and silently mouthed, pointing at the microphone: Your mom.
"Be careful, it's hot." Fu Weiheng casually approached her, handing her the water before taking the phone: "Mom..."
Su Wan awkwardly accepted the water from his hand and turned to retreat to the sofa.
On the other end, she couldn't hear what was being said, but she saw Fu Weiheng tilt his head towards her. Then he smiled slightly and said softly, "Yeah, she's a bit shy. Don't scare her... Um, when you return to the country, I'll bring her back to meet you all..."
Su Wan held the cup of hot water, her face flushed as she lowered her head and sipped slowly. After hanging up, Fu Weiheng sat down beside her and smiled: "My parents are coming back next month; we'll have dinner together then."
It was an obvious statement; what was meant to happen would happen. Su Wan knew she couldn't avoid it and finally responded with a seemingly casual "Oh," agreeing to it.
