“Shu Han! Shu Han, how are you?” Cheng Qiuyi's eyes were fixed on Liu Shuhan's bleeding wound. She grasped Liu Shuhan's wrist and carefully pushed aside her palm to pull out the sharp knife embedded in the injury. Liu Shuhan's palm was drenched in blood, and the smell of blood filled the air.
“Cheng Qiuyi,” Liu Shuhan grimaced, “my hand hurts so much…”
How could it not hurt? Such a sharp knife, such a deep wound.
Someone brought over a first aid kit, and Cheng Qiuyi trembled as she took some gauze to stop the bleeding from Liu Shuhan's palm, determined to take her to the hospital.
Ye Jing suddenly appeared from nowhere, startled by the blood on Cheng Qiuyi's hands. She hurriedly asked, “Qiu Yi, are you hurt?”
“Get away from me!” Cheng Qiuyi was focused on getting Liu Shuhan to the hospital and didn't want to deal with Ye Jing. If the plan was exposed, so be it; they could abandon it. Fortunately, Ye Jing didn’t press further upon seeing that Cheng Qiuyi was not seriously injured and let her go, then turned her attention to Shen Wenqin.
Shen Wenqin had long been subdued by security personnel nearby, pressed to the ground and unable to move. Cheng Boming was too young; everything happened too suddenly for him to react before his mother was restrained. Like the worst villains often depicted in dramas, these people were tall and imposing. Cheng Boming dared not resist and could only crouch beside Shen Wenqin, crying uncontrollably with tears and snot all over his face.
The surrounding guests whispered among themselves, recounting the Cheng family's scandals in detail—more than even the family knew. After sharing their gossip, they added their own commentary; some even shed a few tears out of sympathy. In short, everyone found their own satisfaction in the drama.
A-Zhi had organized a Full Moon Celebration for his daughter, but it ended in this farce because of Shen Wenqin. The joyous occasion turned into a scene of bloodshed, leaving him visibly upset. He and Yan Cailing hurriedly dismissed the guests and asked an elder to take Song Luyao back to rest. The couple casually took two chairs to sit down and waited for the police to come and take away Shen Wenqin, this madwoman.
“I wonder how serious Shu Han's injury is,” Yan Cailing expressed her concern.
A-Zhi comforted her softly by wrapping an arm around her shoulder. “She'll be fine; Miss Liu has good fortune.”
Yan Cailing spat angrily at Shen Wenqin, “What kind of person is she? Cheng Tianhong must be blind; how could he disregard such a good wife and daughter for a lunatic? The Cheng family deserves this!”
At the hospital.
Liu Shuhan's wound was too deep; she was in surgery for stitches. Cheng Qiuyi anxiously paced back and forth outside the operating room, silently praying that nothing would happen to Liu Shuhan. She thought about how lucky she was to have someone like Liu Shuhan; everyone said Liu Shuhan didn’t deserve her, but little did they know that it was Liu Shuhan who had fallen into misfortune by being infatuated with her for ten years. After they got together, due to her own injuries—big and small—Cheng Qiuyi always claimed she would protect Liu Shuhan but had never succeeded even once.
Finally, the lights in the operating room went out. Cheng Qiuyi rushed forward to ask the doctor, “Doctor, how is Shu Han's hand?”
“Thanks to timely medical attention, she's not in serious condition,” the doctor said as he removed his mask with lingering fear. “If the cut had been a few millimeters deeper, Miss Liu might have lost function in her hand.”
"What?" Cheng Qiuyi exclaimed, anxious. "What about now?"
"Now it's fine, just don't get the wound wet until it heals. Come to the hospital regularly for dressing changes. There might be a scar, so Miss Cheng should prepare herself mentally."
"I understand, thank you, doctor."
The effects of the anesthesia hadn't worn off yet, and Liu Shuhan couldn't move half her body. Cheng Qiuyi rented a wheelchair in the hospital and pushed her into the ward. They were still wearing the evening gowns from the banquet, but Liu Shuhan's dress had a large bloodstain on the right side. This dress was custom-made by Cheng Qiuyi for her; although Liu Shuhan didn't know the exact price, she could tell it wasn't cheap. It had only been worn once and was already stained, and she wondered if it could even be cleaned. That bloodstain felt like a knife cutting into Liu Shuhan's heart, more painful than the wound on her hand.
Cheng Qiuyi noticed her tightly furrowed brows and asked gently, "Is your wound hurting again?"
"No," Liu Shuhan shook her head but hesitated several times before pointing at her dress and breaking down. "That lunatic Shen Wenqin got your gift all dirty! That's money! Money!"
Even in such pain, she was thinking about money. Cheng Qiuyi felt both amused and exasperated as she tapped Liu Shuhan's forehead. "Now you care about money? Weren't you brave when you took the knife for me? Liu Shuhan, you might as well just drive me crazy!"
Liu Shuhan's right hand was tightly wrapped, and with her surviving left hand, she covered her forehead and said aggrievedly, "I don't care! This dress was ruined by Shen Wenqin; she has to pay for it." Cheng Qiuyi worked hard for her money; it shouldn't go to waste like this.
"Is this really about the dress?" Cheng Qiuyi frowned. "Do you have any idea how dangerous it was? The doctor said if the knife had gone in a few millimeters deeper, your hand would have been useless! What if it really had happened? What if... what if..." Cheng Qiuyi couldn't even finish that thought; what if the knife hadn't struck Liu Shuhan's hand? Just thinking about it made Cheng Qiuyi unable to accept it. She raised her voice to scold, "Liu Shuhan, listen to me! I have hands and feet; I don't need you to play the hero and take a knife for me! If something really happened, I would never forgive you for the rest of my life!"
Liu Shuhan sat against the edge of the bed, lowering her head and remaining silent. At that moment, she only saw the knife less than five centimeters away from Cheng Qiuyi and hadn't thought much about it. Besides, who would willingly choose to get hurt if given a choice? Now that her hand was like this and she was being scolded by Cheng Qiuyi, it was impossible not to feel frustrated.
Cheng Qiuyi realized she had spoken too harshly. Sighing, she sat down at the edge of the bed and pulled Liu Shuhan into her embrace. "Shu Han, I know your intentions towards me, but next time you encounter danger, please protect yourself first, okay?"
Liu Shuhan pushed Cheng Qiuyi away with her elbow. "Just go away! You might as well never forgive me for life. It's my fault for being stupid—getting hurt and still getting scolded."
Cheng Qiuyi chuckled softly. "You're stupid; you're the dumbest person in the world! Otherwise, how could I have so easily brought you back?"
Liu Shuhan turned away to sulk and ignored Cheng Qiuyi as silence fell over the ward.
After a long while, Liu Shuhan finally spoke up. "Qiu Yi, when that knife was aimed at you, my heart stopped. Less than five centimeters away—what would I have done if it had actually pierced you?"
"You wanted to protect me; I wanted to protect you too. I wanted you not to face those annoying family matters or deal with that irritating Ye Jing. But I'm so useless; I couldn't do it."
"Qiu Yi, you are the one who is truly foolish. Being with me, you are foolish."
Cheng Qiuyi just smiled, looking at Liu Shuhan lying on her side. She reached out and tugged at the blanket covering Liu Shuhan, but Liu Shuhan remained still in her position. So, Cheng Qiuyi walked to the edge of the bed, squatted down, and leaned over to make eye contact with Liu Shuhan. Her dress was quite fitted, making it uncomfortable to squat, so she simply sat sideways on the floor.
“Shu Han.” Cheng Qiuyi called her name face to face, warm breath hitting Liu Shuhan's face. Her sparkling lips were just inches away, and Liu Shuhan could see Cheng Qiuyi's ample chest if she looked down. The anger in her heart was completely dispersed by the alluring thoughts, and her gaze began to wander.
“Shu Han.” Cheng Qiuyi called again, “There’s probably no one smarter than me in this world who can make you follow me wholeheartedly.”
As the effects of the anesthetic began to wear off, the pain in Liu Shuhan's hand finally returned. Her complexion turned pale, and all those alluring thoughts vanished.
“Qiu Yi.” Liu Shuhan pitifully extended her bandaged right hand towards Cheng Qiuyi, “My hand hurts so much.”
“Serves you right!” Cheng Qiuyi couldn’t share in Liu Shuhan's pain; she could only squeeze into the narrow hospital bed with her, silently holding her tightly, with no other way to help.
Liu Shuhan curled up in Cheng Qiuyi's arms and endured the pain all night. Afraid of disturbing Cheng Qiuyi's rest, she gritted her teeth and held on until dawn when the pain finally eased a little. She managed to regulate her breathing and fell into a tired sleep. Meanwhile, Cheng Qiuyi rested her chin on Liu Shuhan's head and stayed awake all night.
There was no need for Liu Shuhan to stay in the hospital for her injury; the next day she insisted on being discharged. Unable to persuade her otherwise, Cheng Qiuyi handled the discharge procedures for her and carefully asked the doctor about dietary restrictions and lifestyle precautions.
A nurse tidying up the room chatted softly with Liu Shuhan, “That’s your friend, right? She really cares about you; my boyfriend doesn’t care for me this much.”
Feeling proud, Liu Shuhan thought, who else in this world could be like Cheng Qiuyi? “She’s okay,” she replied politely, “not particularly special.”
“Is that not good? If a friend can do this much for you, you should be grateful.”
Liu Shuhan smiled slightly, “You don’t know; she can be really silly sometimes and can drive you crazy.”
The nurse thought that Liu Shuhan’s smile seemed strange; it didn’t sound like she was introducing a friend but rather like someone bragging about their boyfriend to their best friend.
The car driven by A-Zhi was waiting outside the hospital. As soon as Cheng Qiuyi and Liu Shuhan came out, he honked to signal them, “Miss, Miss Shu Han, over here!”
The two got into the car. Remembering last night’s antics, Liu Shuhan said apologetically, “A-Zhi, I’m really sorry about what happened last night.”
"Miss Shu Han, what are you talking about? It was that crazy woman Shen Wenqin who caused the trouble last night. Why are you apologizing instead?"
"Where is Shen Wenqin now?" Cheng Qiuyi asked.
"She was taken away by the police and should still be locked up."
Cheng Qiuyi nodded. "Get a few reliable subordinates to keep an eye on her. We cannot let Cheng Tianhong bail Shen Wenqin out."
"Don't worry, Miss, it's already taken care of."
Liu Shuhan was still in the car, and it was inappropriate for her to hear the rest of the conversation. Cheng Qiuyi exchanged a knowing glance with A-Zhi.
As soon as they got home, Liu Shuhan started insisting on taking a shower.
"The doctor said your wound can't get wet," Cheng Qiuyi said sternly.
"I want to take a shower!" Liu Shuhan pleaded, shaking Cheng Qiuyi's arm. "Qiu Yi, if I don't shower soon, I'm going to smell bad. Just smell me!" She pretended to lift her neck closer to Cheng Qiuyi.
"Alright, I'll smell you," Cheng Qiuyi said as she wrapped her arms around Liu Shuhan's waist and pressed her nose against Liu Shuhan's neck, taking a deep breath. "Nonsense! You don't smell at all. My Shu Han is fragrant from head to toe."
A-Zhi had just retrieved Liu Shuhan's medicine from the trunk and arrived upstairs a moment later than Cheng Qiuyi and Liu Shuhan. As he reached the door, he saw the two shamelessly embracing in the entryway without even closing the door. He silently set down the bag in his hand, tiptoed away, and turned to leave.
It stinks, it stinks so much, A-Zhi thought. The air was filled with the sour smell of love.
