"Let me see." Luo Yi grabbed her ankle and lifted it to take a look. Zhou Yao, feeling embarrassed, immediately turned away, but Luo Yi quickly squeezed and probed beneath her.
"Ah!" Zhou Yao's heart trembled.
"You're lying." Luo Yi lowered his gaze, rubbing his wet fingertips. He looked at her with eyes as deep as a wolf's. He lightly inhaled, locking his gaze onto her, and slowly began to untie his robe.
Zhou Yao felt a chill run down her spine under his intense stare, realizing the impending disaster. She quickly slipped off the bed, saying, "I was just joking, goodbye."
Luo Yi leaned forward and pulled her back down under him; Zhou Yao's eyes widened, her hair disheveled.
Luo Yi slowed his movements, lowered his eyelids, and tucked the stray hairs from her temples behind her ear. His gaze shifted to her: "I think I mentioned before—I'm someone who holds grudges. Before you play with me, you should be prepared."
Zhou Yao was completely unprepared:
"Woo—"
……
Zhou Yao lay on the bed like a lump of clay, motionless, her heavy breathing proving she was still alive.
Luo Yi came in from outside, holding a cup of water and bringing it to her lips.
Zhou Yao lifted herself slightly, leaning in to drink. As she drank, she pressed the rim of the cup down with her mouth, slowly finishing more than half of it. Finally feeling a bit more energetic, she shot him a sideways glance and pouted, "Boss Luo, you don't care about me at all."
Luo Yi took a sip of water and glanced at her sideways.
"I'm about to be torn apart by you!"
"Not feeling well?" Luo Yi put down the cup and asked.
Zhou Yao remained silent.
"Zhou Yao, do you know what your behavior is called?"
"What?"
"Taking advantage and then acting innocent."
Zhou Yao fell silent again.
She argued, "When I was your age, I was still in elementary school."
"So what?" Luo Yi replied.
Zhou Yao pouted; there wasn't really a 'so what.' She was just in a good mood and wanted to talk. She turned over, lay on the bed, stretched lazily, and then curled back under the blanket.
"It's warmer here than in our dormitory. It's freezing in the dorm, and there's no heating."
"I don't have heating here either." Luo Yi lifted the blanket and got onto the bed.
"There is heating." Zhou Yao jumped into his arms, hugging his chest, her eyes squinting with a smile like a little fox.
Luo Yi let out a light chuckle and turned off the lights.
...
In less than a week, the temperature in Beijing dropped by ten degrees. The heating day was delayed, leaving the students suffering, freezing at night as they tried to sleep.
Zhou Yao, however, was living quite comfortably, staying at Luo Yi's place. She slept soundly in the warmth at night, though she inevitably had to "pay for the heating" in other ways before bed.
Tang Shangri-La Duo and the others thought Zhou Yao had gone home and didn't pay much attention; as for that day when they ran into Luo Yi, they believed Zhou Yao's explanation—that Luo Yi had come to Beijing for something and happened to bump into her.
The roommates all thought Zhou Yao had a fleeting crush and couldn't possibly really like the inn's boss. However, it was evident that her complexion had been getting better each day; those who didn't know might think she had been visiting a beauty salon.
Zhou Yao ran between the laboratory and Luo Yi's home with ease and contentment.
Luo Yi continued to work as usual, managing various matters in the Procurement Department. During this time, he met with Manager Xia a few times; although Manager Xia still looked down on him, he couldn't find any faults to criticize.
Luo Yi went through all the historical data of the Procurement Department and finally found some clues. At that moment, Lu Xu contacted him, saying they had news on their end as well.
Luo Yi initially planned to meet at a café, but Lu Xu showed up directly at his place. Luo Yi wasn't surprised; it was impossible to hide his residence from the police.
Lu Xu entered and looked around: "This place is quite comfortable."
Luo Yi casually glanced around and suddenly realized that after Zhou Yao moved in, his home had changed significantly. There were small glass tanks on the countertop and dining table filled with aquatic plants, with little fish swimming around. By the floor-to-ceiling windows were pothos and spider plants, and the sofa now had red and blue cushions added.
The decorative wall on one side of the living room, which used to be bare, was now adorned with colorful stones and modern crafts.
That originally dull and desolate space no longer existed.
"What do you want to drink?"
"Just water."
Luo Yi poured two cups of water and handed one to Lu Xu.
Lu Xu took out a cigarette, put one in his mouth, and offered another to Luo Yi, who raised his hand to stop him. He had been smoking less recently.
Lu Xu patted his pockets, "Damn, I forgot my lighter."
Luo Yi tossed him his lighter. Lu Xu caught it, lit the cigarette, and asked, "Are you still suspicious that Yan Lin is Dan Shan?"
"Yeah."
In Yading, Luo Yi had analyzed for Lu Xu that Yan Lin's appearance was too coincidental.
Zhou Yao was originally supposed to go with Lin Jinyan and the others along the Luo Ke Line. Once they ventured deep into the mountains, any unexpected events would be uncontrollable. However, she changed her mind at the last minute, and Lin Jinyan, as the team leader, couldn't refuse to go. In the mountains, there was no cell signal, making it impossible to contact Dan Shan's people, effectively losing track of Zhou Yao.
At that moment, Yan Lin showed up.
Not long after she arrived, Wu Ming died.
When Yan Lin was taken away by Knife-Wielder, Luo Yi found crushed cigarette butts in the bushes. He knew very well that Yan Lin was not the type to lose her composure under stress; there was only one explanation: she lit a cigarette intentionally—to signal her location to Knife-Wielder so that she could "be taken." The subsequent "self-defense" then made sense.
As for the assault, Luo Yi believed Wu Ming didn't have the guts for that. Yan Lin's original plan should have been to create a scene of struggle, pretending she was about to be killed and then killing in self-defense. But she didn't expect the police to arrive so quickly; without enough time to design the details and fearing exposure, she had no choice but to resort to a desperate measure and ordered that Knife-Wielder assault her.
Other women might not be able to do it, but Yan Lin had that kind of ruthlessness.
Although Luo Yi made this judgment, Lu Xu's perspective remained the same as before: "I believe Yan Lin is just Dan Shan's right-hand person, similar in status to the one who attempted to kidnap Zhou Yao in the hospital."
Luo Yi shook his head steadily.
"Do you think Dan Shan is a woman?" Lu Xu asked. "What evidence do you have?"
"I have no evidence. Just intuition."
Lu Xu was speechless and raised an eyebrow. "Intuition?"
"Yes. At first, I also suspected she was just Dan Shan's right-hand person, but after she killed Wu Ming, I sat in her room for half the night."
At this point, Luo Yi paused; he couldn't describe the eerie atmosphere of that night. As he sat silently in the darkness, a thought suddenly emerged in his mind:
"She is not a subordinate; she is Dan Shan."
"She originally wanted to kill me but failed time and again. Meanwhile, I managed to capture that group of Knife-Wielders and almost caught Wu Ming alive, which left her in a difficult position and forced her to change her plan to 'being violated.' This piqued her interest."
"Interest?" Lu Xu was confused.
"Yan Lin is very competitive; she likes to challenge others and admires those who are stronger and more ruthless than herself. Whether mentally or physically," Luo Yi lowered his head and tapped his fingers, "this excites her."
This had once excited him too.
Lu Xu frowned. "So what you're saying is—"
"She has already guessed that I suspect her connection to Dan Shan; she just hasn't confirmed her identity."
Lu Xu was puzzled. "If she guessed it, why didn't she take action?"
"Where was there no action?" Luo Yi looked at Lu Xu, curiously curling his lips. "The very next night, the people who kidnapped Zhou Yao came, and they were armed."
"Officer Lu, Zhou Yao was lucky that night; she happened to be in the hospital and could hold on until Jiang Peng arrived. If Zhou Yao had been sleeping in the inn that night, you wouldn't be sitting here now."
Lu Xu recalled what had happened in the hospital and felt a lingering fear. "They were well-prepared. During the Flash Flood incident, they waited for Zhou Yao to fall into the water to abduct her without anyone noticing; the police wouldn't even suspect anything."
Luo Yi shook his head again. "The group at the hospital wasn't just there to kidnap Zhou Yao."
"What do you mean?"
"The night before, a group of Knife-Wielders came; they were quite confident but miscalculated with me. Within just one day, another group arrived at the hospital, and their leader is of a high rank. Don't you think the troop movement is too quick? Officer Lu, Dan Shan's activities are in Yunnan."
Lu Xu was taken aback.
"The purpose of their visit is to protect Dan Shan," Luo Yi said firmly. "Yan Lin is Dan Shan."
"Your speculation is reasonable but not absolute. Moreover," Lu Xu pondered for a few seconds before finally saying, "Luo Yi, to be honest with you, my colleagues in Yunnan have found reliable information that Dan Shan is a man."
Now it was Luo Yi's turn to be slightly stunned.
"Are you sure?"
Lu Xu sighed. "I just found out. There was an undercover officer beside Dan Shan; at that time, Dan Shan was just an emerging jade smuggler. Later, when the undercover identity was exposed, he withdrew."
"And after that?"
"It’s strange, but after that, there hasn’t been any concrete news about Dan Shan."
"A man?"
Luo Yi bit her lip, thought for a moment, and asked, "When did this happen?"
"Three years ago," Lu Xu replied. "In these three years, the police over there haven't had any close contact with Dan Shan, and in the jade smuggling circles, they only hear his name but never see him in person."
Luo Yi frowned, her expression serious.
Lu Xu continued, "So for Yan Lin, we still have to follow what I told you in Yading—use her as bait and don’t act rashly. I'm afraid if this lead breaks off, we won’t be able to find Dan Shan at all."
Luo Yi remained silent, filled with doubts, but couldn’t sort through them at the moment.
Lu Xu asked again, "Have there been any movements on your side recently?"
Luo Yi looked up. "I’ll let you know once it’s confirmed." She added, "I need to accompany General Manager Xia to Xishuangbanna in a couple of days."
"Oh, that jade raw material procurement conference?"
"You’re quite well-informed."
"The person in charge from Yan Lin’s company will also be attending."
Luo Yi shook her head. "Yan Lin is going personally."
"Why?"
Luo Yi glanced at him and said, "Because I'm going."
Lu Xu responded with silence.
"Are you going for the company, or is there another purpose?"
Luo Yi did not hide it from him: "I reviewed the procurement projects from Oya over the past few years and found a few minor issues. I'm going to meet with the suppliers there."
"Do you need me—"
"Jiang Peng is there. His people will take care of it."
Lu Xu reminded him to stay safe before taking his leave.
Before leaving, Luo Yi added, "If you want the other party to reveal their true colors quickly, once Yan Lin arrives there, control Lin Jinyan and cut off his connection with Dan Shan's group."
...
At the end of November, the ninth test of the land project phase one was successful.
Professor Zhou, along with the laboratory researchers, witnessed that moment—the sample data analysis results obtained from field surveys matched the remote sensing image data analysis results from land with a high degree of accuracy of 99.1%.
Phase one of the land project was a complete success.
Zhou Yao was extremely excited and wanted to be the first to share this news with Luo Yi and celebrate together. However, Professor Zhou invited the staff to go home for a celebration dinner. As Zhou Yao followed everyone out of the laboratory building, she saw Luo Yi standing by the flower bed waiting for her in the night.
Zhou Yao walked towards him with the crowd, smiled apologetically at him, then beamed brightly and gave him a thumbs up.
Luo Yi understood that the land deal was successful.
As a group of people passed by, Luo Yi smiled lightly at Zhou Yao.
It was only when Zhou Yao got home that she saw the text message from Luo Yi, which simply said: "Thank you."
Although Zhou Yao was just assisting, she was still extremely happy. After working for so long, there would be a period of rest ahead, as Professor Zhou needed to report the project results to the higher-ups.
While eating at the table, Zhou Yao tilted her head happily a couple of times. Xia Mingzhen glanced over, and Zhou Yao quickly sat up straight. She had gotten used to being carefree at Luo Yi's house and hadn't adjusted back immediately.
Professor Zhou was chatting and laughing with everyone, while Zhou Yao quietly sat beside Xia Mingzhen, focusing on her meal. During this time, the housekeeper came over and mentioned that Assistant Ruan had called to ask about booking tickets to Xishuangbanna.
Upon hearing Luo Yi's name, Zhou Yao perked up; it turned out they were going to Xishuangbanna for a meeting. She immediately said, "Mom, I want to go too."
Xia Mingzhen glanced at her.
"It's so cold in Beijing these days; take me with you. I have time off."
To Zhou Yao's surprise, Xia Mingzhen agreed but added, "Ask Jiang Han if he wants to go to Xishuangbanna for a couple of days."
Zhou Yao was taken aback.
After returning to her room, Zhou Yao first asked Lu Xu, who said it was fine to travel. Then she called Jiang Han and warned him not to tag along.
Jiang Han chuckled twice: "Zhou Yao, are you the one complaining about me now? I’m definitely going; I’ll take leave from class just to go."
Zhou Yao exclaimed, "Jiang Han, you're so annoying!"
Before setting off, Zhou Yao felt a bit of perverse excitement at the thought of sneaking around with Luo Yi under Xia's watchful eye.
As soon as she spotted Luo Yi at the airport, Zhou Yao made exaggerated facial expressions at him, but Luo Yi didn’t respond. Instead, he glanced at Xia, Assistant Ruan, and Jiang Han behind her.
Zhou Yao's excitement remained, but with Xia present, she dared not act out and had to play the obedient girl, which was quite a struggle. Whenever the others moved ahead, she would sneakily touch Luo Yi's hand, but he seemed uninterested and ignored her. Zhou Yao assumed he didn’t want Xia to notice, so after a few attempts to tease him, she stopped.
Upon arriving in Jinghong, the capital of Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, they were instantly enveloped in summer. The sun shone brightly, flowers bloomed profusely, and tropical plants created a lush canopy overhead. The golden Jade Buddha Tower peeked through the greenery, giving a feeling reminiscent of Thailand.
Zhou Yao turned back to Luo Yi in the back seat and said, “I’ve heard people say that Dai Language is very similar to Thai.”
Luo Yi looked at her calmly without saying a word.
Zhou Yao was taken aback and shifted her gaze to Jiang Han beside him. “Hey, I’m talking to you!”
“There are two people in the back seat; how would I know you’re talking to me?” Jiang Han retorted.
Feeling guilty, Zhou Yao shot him a glare before turning back around.
Jiang Han said, “Zhou Yao, try glaring at me again.”
Just as Zhou Yao was about to snap back at him, she noticed Xia Mingzhen frowning slightly and looking at her sideways, causing her to shrink back into her seat.
Xia Mingzhen glanced back and saw Luo Yi, offering a faint smile. “These two kids have been this noisy since they were little; I apologize for the disturbance.”
Luo Yi curved his lips slightly.
After completing the check-in process and tidying up a bit, it was time for dinner.
Zhou Yao changed into a beautiful white dress with floral patterns, dressed herself up nicely, and stepped out to run into Jiang Han.
"Going on a blind date?"
Zhou Yao couldn't be bothered to respond.
Then she saw Luo Yi, Xia Mingzhen, and Assistant Ruan coming out of their respective rooms. Zhou Yao glanced eagerly at Luo Yi for a brief moment before turning her attention to Xia Mingzhen. The latter was pleased with her daughter's vibrant appearance and, while walking towards the elevator, said to Jiang Han, "Jiang Han, doesn't Yao Yao look good in that outfit?"
"She does," Jiang Han replied, lowering his gaze to Zhou Yao's dress belt. Noticing it was twisted, he reached out to straighten it.
Zhou Yao flinched and stepped back, saying, "I can do it myself."
Jiang Han frowned. "Do you think I want to do anything to you?"
Zhou Yao touched her belt and turned her head away, stealing a glance at Luo Yi, who seemed oblivious to her presence and walked straight into the elevator.
As the elevator slowly descended to the restaurant floor, none of the five in the elevator spoke.
Luo Yi stood at the back and glanced at Zhou Yao's dress. Without changing his expression, he reached out and accurately found the softness beneath it, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"Ah!" Zhou Yao shuddered and jumped up.
The elevator jolted.
Luo Yi calmly stared ahead. Xia Mingzhen turned to look at her daughter's embarrassing behavior, her eyes widening slightly. "Zhou Yao?"
Zhou Yao touched her back: "A bug just bit me."
Xia Mingzhen withdrew her gaze.
Zhou Yao clenched her teeth, but she couldn't do anything to Luo Yi. She had to wait until they got out of the elevator to turn around and glare at him fiercely.
...
Assistant Ruan reserved a table by the window. During meals, Xia Mingzhen preferred not to talk, and Assistant Ruan was influenced by her silence, leaving only Jiang Han occasionally chatting with Zhou Yao.
Halfway through the meal, a little boy suddenly rushed over and hugged Luo Yi's leg: "Uncle!"
Luo Yi lowered his head: "Tao Tao?"
Zhou Yao looked up and saw a strange woman approaching, accompanied by Yan Lin. Yan Lin wore a black knee-length skirt that was light and thin, accentuating her figure even more than in Yading.
Zhou Yao glanced back at Luo Yi, noticing that the boy named Tao Tao was pointing at the food on Luo Yi's plate, asking him to give him some.
Sitting there, Zhou Yao felt like a stranger.
Yan Lin stepped forward and smiled at Xia Mingzhen: "Ms. Xia, long time no see."
Oya and Yanni were competitors. When Oya fell into crisis, Yanni rose rapidly, and Xia Mingzhen knew exactly who was behind it all. However, without evidence, she still had to maintain appearances.
"Ms. Yan," Xia Mingzhen smiled.
"I didn't expect you to come in person, along with Assistant Ruan, and the young master of the Jiang Family—" Yan Lin's gaze landed on Zhou Yao. Zhou Yao held her breath; if Yan Lin claimed to recognize her and brought up her stay at Luo Yi's inn, Xia Mingzhen would surely fly into a rage.
Zhou Yao quickly glanced at Luo Yi, who was absentmindedly stroking Tao Tao's head.
"This must be—" Yan Lin looked at Xia Mingzhen, "I guess it's your daughter."
Xia Mingzhen smiled lightly.
Zhou Yao also nodded slightly to Yan Lin, "Hello."
Yan Lin looked at Zhou Yao with a meaningful smile. It was then that Zhou Yao realized Yan Lin was not interested in playing those annoying little tricks in front of Luo Yi, and Luo Yi was well aware of her personality, so he remained calm.
Once again, it was that damned unapproachable understanding that she could not interfere with.
Zhou Yao lowered his head to eat, finding the food tasteless.
After greeting, Yan Lin was about to leave when her sister took out a photo from her bag: "Yi Ge, this is a photo of you and Tao Tao. I prepared it for you two years ago. Here."
"Thanks." Luo Yi accepted it.
Zhou Yao glanced at the photo; Luo Yi was holding a young boy and smiling lightly. Looking at Tao Tao in front of him, who seemed very familiar with him, it was clear this was not their first meeting in two years.
He had seen Tao Tao and Yan Lin after returning to Beijing.
Zhou Yao held his chopsticks, his fingers numb.
Yan Lin smiled gently and nodded slightly before elegantly taking her leave. The one affected by her was not just Zhou Yao; Xia Mingzhen maintained a calm expression as she glanced at Luo Yi and said, "Mr. Luo, your ex-girlfriend is quite capable."
Luo Yi smiled, "I agree."
Xia Mingzhen did not speak again, but Luo Yi understood everything.
This trip did not require Xia Mingzhen to come personally; it was simply because he did not trust him. Coincidentally, his ex-girlfriend also came, as if they had arranged it in advance.
After dinner, the local partners invited General Xia to see the night view, while Zhou Yao claimed to feel dizzy and returned to her room to rest. Luo Yi did not go either.
Zhou Yao lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling in a daze, and began to check her phone repeatedly.
Eight o'clock, nine o'clock, ten o'clock—Luo Yi had not contacted her. What was he doing in his room? Watching TV? Playing on the computer? That didn’t seem like him.
Had he gone out to see Tao Tao?
Yan Lin was also staying here; had she gone to find him? She trusted Luo Yi, but she could not stand Yan Lin's presence in front of him.
Zhou Yao irritably ran her fingers through her hair, suddenly hating herself and the state of being controlled by him.
Time passed slowly, and General Xia returned and went to sleep.
It was eleven o'clock at night.
Zhou Yao anxiously tossed and turned in bed, glancing at the slowly moving clock and then at her phone with no messages. Finally, she could not help but leave her room.
Luo Yi's room was down another hallway; she wasn’t worried about being discovered.
Zhou Yao knocked twice on the door, feeling a bit nervous. The door opened quickly.
Luo Yi looked at her and asked, "Aren't you asleep yet?"
"It’s hot." Zhou Yao walked in, looking around. The suitcase was placed on the cabinet, neatly packed with clothes inside, and the bed had wrinkles as if someone had just lain on it—only one person was there.
Zhou Yao sighed in relief and turned to him, "What are you doing tonight?"
Luo Yi pointed his chin toward the desk where a notebook was open. Zhou Yao smiled, "Busy with work." She walked over and glanced down at the candy wrappers and cookie packaging in the trash can.
Tao Tao had been here.
The smile on Zhou Yao's face faded. She turned her back to Luo Yi, who did not see her.
She didn’t say anything, returning to sit on the edge of the bed, propping herself up with her hands and gently swinging her legs.
Luo Yi pulled a chair over to sit across from her, resting his elbows on his legs and leaning closer to her, speaking softly, "Can’t sleep?"
Zhou Yao lifted her head, her dark eyes fixed on him, "Luo Boss, I want to sleep with you."
Luo Yi smiled lightly and patted her head, "Aren't you afraid of being caught by your mom?"
"She’s already asleep," Zhou Yao pouted after saying that. "I don’t care."
"Then—" Luo Yi was about to speak when his phone rang.
He took out his phone to check for a second and immediately flipped it over.
But Zhou Yao had already seen "Yan Lin."
Luo Yi stood up and walked into the bathroom while Zhou Yao quietly stared at the empty chair in front of her.
Luo Yi closed the bathroom door, frowned, and answered the phone in a low voice, "Are you done yet—"
"Yi Ge, I guess you weren't able to get an appointment with General Gao?" Yan Lin chuckled. "I happen to have a connection here."
Luo Yi exited the bathroom, and Zhou Yao looked up at him.
"You should go back to your room and rest. I'm heading out to take care of something."
Zhou Yao tilted her head back. "It's so late."
Luo Yi forced a smile. "I'm meeting a very important supplier." With that, he turned to grab the lighter and cigarettes from the table.
"Is it Yan Lin?"
Luo Yi paused and turned back to look at her, his expression becoming calm.
He said, "It's not to meet her."
"Then she will be there too," Zhou Yao insisted, staring at him.
"Yes." Luo Yi turned around and put the cigarette case and lighter into his pocket.
"You're not allowed to go," Zhou Yao suddenly spoke up.
Luo Yi paused for a moment, walked over to the chair in front of Zhou Yao, and sat down, locking his gaze with hers. "Zhou Yao, I have something very important to handle. Also, I have no relationship with Yan Lin."
Zhou Yao stared at him blankly, a bit confused, but in the end, she shook her head stubbornly. "I don't want you to go. No matter what it is."
"Zhou Yao. Be obedient." Luo Yi's tone became slightly stern, carrying an air of pressure.
Zhou Yao's lips trembled, and she suddenly shouted at him, "I won't be obedient! Don't talk to me like that! I just don't want you to go see her!"
Luo Yi furrowed his brows in restraint, his expression changing slightly. "Is it impossible to reason with you?"
Zhou Yao glared at him resentfully.
He looked into her eyes for a moment, then glanced at his watch and commanded, "You stay here and rest; I'll be back as soon as possible."
He stood up and left.
"Luo Boss." Zhou Yao's voice softened but still caught Luo Yi's attention. He paused in the doorway.
"Luo Boss, I really like you."
Zhou Yao said this unusually calmly, "But you are not allowed to go find her—I know you won't listen anyway; you never do. But—"
She threatened, "If you go out, I will leave immediately and disappear from your sight forever."
Luo Yi gritted his teeth, hesitated for a few seconds, then opened the door and stepped out, closing it behind him.
The room fell silent, so quiet that one could almost hear the ticking of the clock.
Zhou Yao sat there in a daze, her heart shattered into pieces, yet she couldn't feel the pain; she had become numb.
She lowered her head, watching as tears fell one by one onto her hands, plop, plop. She wasn't crying; her eyes were just shedding tears.
After an unknown amount of time, she pouted, wiped her tears dry with the back of her hand, sniffed a bit, and slowly stood up to walk outside.
As soon as she opened the door, she froze in place.
Luo Yi leaned against the wall across from her with one hand in his pocket, smoking a cigarette, his gaze deeply fixed on her.
