On March 1, 2020, at 5:10 PM, in Lan City, Bing Tianyi had just returned to his rented room after a night of gaming. Seeing that his parents had not yet come home, he collapsed onto the single bed in the back room. Before he could close his eyes, the phone rang.
Bing Tianyi frowned and pulled out the old phone he had bought two years ago from his pocket. When he saw the unfamiliar number, he muttered, "What a waste of time. A broke guy like me? The scammer must be blind!"
After saying this, Bing Tianyi tossed the phone aside.
Unexpectedly, just as he threw it away, the phone rang again. Bing Tianyi had no choice but to get up, his stubble making him look even older. He answered the call, and before the other party could speak, Bing Tianyi sneered, "Alright, I don't have time to play with you, get lost!"
"Tianyi, when did you start daring to curse at me?"
On the other end of the line was a young woman's magnetic voice—one he would never forget!
Sitting on the bed, Bing Tianyi jolted upright and let out a long breath before tentatively asking, "Is that you, Ziyan?"
Wang Ziyan was Bing Tianyi's classmate from middle school through college and his ultimate goddess. Although their connection seemed significant, they had only exchanged three sentences throughout their college years.
The first: "Hello!"
The second: "It's not me!"
The third: "I'm not gay!"
To anyone else, this would seem impossible, but it had indeed happened to Bing Tianyi.
"Alright, I know you didn't mean it earlier. At 7 PM tonight, Room Two on the fifth floor of Dragon City Hotel for a class reunion. If you don't come, you might regret it!"
"Who could it be..." Before Bing Tianyi could finish his thought, he heard a beeping sound from the other end of the phone.
The invitation from the Goddess of Dreams was something he had never dared to imagine in his lifetime, yet it happened today. This made Bing Tianyi unable to help but rekindle new hope for life.
He dug out the suit he wore at graduation and took out the leather shoes his father received from a friend last New Year. Although they were a bit small, they would do for now; at least they were better than his own shoes with cracked seams. After shaving, brushing his teeth, and washing his face, when Bing Tianyi finally stood in front of the mirror, he was stunned by his handsome appearance!
"No wonder the goddess invited me; it seems she knows I've become more handsome!" After this exclamation, Bing Tianyi hurriedly walked out of his room.
Of course, it was still early to head out, but Bing Tianyi didn't go directly to Dragon City Hotel. Instead, he planned to visit the night market. That place had been his source of living expenses for the past six months.
In the two years since graduating from college, Bing Tianyi had been dismissed by countless companies. Half a year ago, he decided to stay home, not stepping outside at all, becoming a true recluse.
His parents supported the family by running a stall at the night market, struggling to make ends meet.
Many times, Bing Tianyi complained about why he couldn't be like Wang Ziyan, born into a wealthy family with chauffeured rides to high school. When she got accepted into college, her family gifted her a Ferrari. Meanwhile, he had to save money just to take a taxi.
In his spare time, Bing Tianyi often reflected on life; specifically what he was reflecting on, he couldn't quite say.
But now, it seemed that Bing Tianyi had forgotten all of that. He only remembered that he was about to meet the goddess he hadn't seen in over a year.
Soon enough, Bing Tianyi arrived in front of his parents' Dumpling Stall. Years ago, his parents had moved to this unfamiliar big city for their son's education. The city's prosperity made these elderly folks acutely aware of life's harsh realities. However, they believed that enduring hardship was worth it if it meant their son could have a better life.
Little did they expect that after their son graduated from college, things would not improve; in fact, they had gotten worse.
Not only did their son remain unemployed, but now he had also changed so drastically.
Two elderly men, frustrated with their son, were discussing how to encourage him to change when Bing Tianyi suddenly appeared before them.
"Are you here to ask us for money again?" Bing Tianyi's Father asked sternly in a low voice.
"Why else would I be here?"
"No!"
"What is that then?" Bing Tianyi immediately spotted the hundred-dollar bill in the drawer.
"If you have the ability, why don't you earn it yourself? You're already an adult, and if we die, what are you going to do?" Bing Tianyi's Father stood up, holding a spoon, ready to hit his son on the head.
"But you're still alive. As long as you're alive, you have to take care of me. Besides, you're only in your fifties; you have at least ten more years to live," Bing Tianyi said casually in front of his parents' Dumpling Stall.
Bing Tianyi's Mother, like other mothers, was not only kind but also loved her son dearly. Seeing the helpless expression on her son's face, she felt unhappy but still took out a hundred dollars and some change to hand to Bing Tianyi.
Holding the money, Bing Tianyi quickly said, "Mom is the best!" After saying this, he prepared to turn and dive into the crowd.
At that moment, Bing Tianyi's Father looked helpless and frowned deeply, displeased as he said to his wife, "Have you lost your mind? That money was meant for Brother Bao tonight; how could you just give it away?"
