I noticed the Cleaning Cart parked at the door of a room at the end of the hallway, with only a housekeeper cleaning nearby. An idea struck me, and I quickly walked over to the Cleaning Cart, pretending to search for something.
"Hello, are you cleaning room 1808?" I asked casually while rummaging through the items on the Cleaning Cart.
The housekeeper, a middle-aged woman, paused her work and looked at me with curiosity. "Yes, why?"
"Well, my friend stayed in this room before and accidentally left behind a very important necklace. Could you let me go in and look for it?" I raised my head, looking anxiously at the housekeeper.
She sized me up and hesitated. "Um, that's not really allowed. We have rules..."
"Please, that necklace means a lot to me!" I grasped the housekeeper's arm, my tone almost pleading. "I'll be quick; it won't take much of your time!"
The housekeeper was startled by my urgency and tried to pull away from my grip. "Calm down, just let go of me..."
I quickly released her arm and took a step back, still wearing an anxious expression.
Seeing this, the housekeeper sighed. "Alright, alright, but hurry up and don't let anyone see you."
"Thank you so much!" I exclaimed excitedly, shaking her hand gratefully.
She waved her hand dismissively, signaling me to hurry inside while she walked down the hallway to continue cleaning other rooms.
I gently pushed open the door to room 1808, slipped inside, and quickly closed the door behind me. The room was quiet, with the curtains drawn tight and a faint scent of perfume lingering in the air.
I took a deep breath, trying to keep myself calm. My gaze quickly swept across the room, hoping to find some clues.
On the nightstand lay a half-open magazine next to an empty ashtray. I picked up the magazine and flipped through a few pages, finding nothing unusual. Then, I opened the drawer of the nightstand; it was empty except for a hotel service guide.
I turned my attention to the wardrobe. Opening the wardrobe door, I found that the clothes had been taken away, leaving only a few empty hangers swaying gently, making faint clinking sounds. I bent down to carefully check the corners of the wardrobe, hoping to find any overlooked items, but ultimately came up empty.
The bathroom door was slightly ajar, so I walked in. The sink was neatly arranged with toiletries, and the towels had been replaced with new ones; everything was in order, showing no signs of having been used.
Could it be that I was being overly suspicious? I felt somewhat discouraged.
Just as I was about to give up, my gaze fell on something under the pillow. I bent down and reached out to touch it, discovering a hard object. Pulling it out forcefully revealed a white envelope.
I eagerly opened the envelope to find a hotel Expense List inside. I examined the items on the list: red wine, steak, dessert… The time was from nine to eleven last night. My heart sank; Xin Zhiyuan had clearly told me he was busy socializing—how could he have been alone in the hotel eating these things?
My mind was filled with questions.
“Knock knock knock…”
Suddenly, a rapid knocking at the door interrupted my thoughts.
"Who?" I asked warily.
"Hello, have you found the necklace?" came the voice of the attendant from outside the door.
