On the other side, Li Xiumei passed by the Zhao Family's yard and saw Zhang Xiaoxiao and Zhao Guangcai happily eating rabbit meat inside the house. She felt extremely envious.
She tightened her grip on the bamboo basket in her hand, which contained lunch that her mother had asked her to bring to her father.
"Xiu Mei!" Mother Li suddenly walked out of the house and shouted at Li Xiumei, who was standing dazed at Zhao Guangcai's door, "What are you standing there for? Hurry up and take your dad his lunch!"
Li Xiumei was startled and came back to her senses, quickly nodding in agreement, "Oh, I’ll go right now."
After saying that, she turned around and ran out.
Zhang Xiaoxiao heard Mother Li's angry shout and instinctively turned her head, noticing Li Xiumei standing outside the yard. She paused for a moment before realizing what was happening and couldn't help but smile slightly.
It seemed that Li Xiumei truly had feelings for Zhao Guangcai. However, this love of Li Xiumei's wasn't genuine; it was merely a result of vanity. After all, Zhao Guangcai was a poor hunter while she came from a Da Fu family in the village. The things she wanted were not possessed by others, which was why she became interested in Zhao Guangcai.
Nonetheless, Zhang Xiaoxiao didn't care about Li Xiumei's feelings for Zhao Guangcai. After all, she and Li Xiumei were destined to be enemies; why should she concern herself with an enemy's thoughts?
"Xiaoxiao, what's wrong?" Zhao Guangcai asked when he noticed her attention was focused outside the window.
"Nothing," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied with a smile, shaking her head before lowering it to continue eating.
Seeing that she was unwilling to say more, Zhao Guangcai stopped asking questions but furrowed his brows slightly. He couldn't shake off the feeling that Li Xiumei was strange; it seemed like she was always watching their home. He didn't like the feeling of being observed.
After finishing their meal, Zhang Xiaoxiao sat on a chair soaking up the sun. The autumn sun was warm and felt very comfortable on her skin. Zhang Xiaoxiao sat in the chair, enjoying the sunlight while dozing off.
Unknowingly, she fell asleep.
Zhao Guangcai finished cleaning the dishes and walked out of the kitchen, only to see Zhang Xiaoxiao sitting in a chair, eyes closed, quietly sleeping. The sunlight illuminated her fair and delicate face, making her skin appear even more translucent. Her eyelashes were long, casting a light shadow beneath her eyelids. Her breathing was steady and calm, indicating that she was indeed asleep.
Zhao Guangcai gazed at her serene sleeping posture and couldn't bear to disturb her, so he refrained from calling out to her. He sat down beside her and quietly stared at her face. Her features were exquisite, combining beautifully together. Especially those eyes, large and bright, as if they could speak. Her nose was elegantly shaped, and her lips were full and rosy, resembling two ripe mountain cherries. Her skin was very fair, like milk. Her hair was thick and black, cascading over her shoulders like a waterfall. She had a great figure—tall and well-proportioned.
She was perfect in every way, without a hint of flaw. As Zhao Guangcai looked at her, a thought suddenly flashed through his mind: if he could be with her forever, how happy that would be. At this thought, his heart raced a little faster, and his breathing became somewhat irregular. He quickly took a few deep breaths to calm his emotions. He didn't know what was happening to him; he just knew he didn't want to scare her.
He looked at her, let out a gentle sigh, then stood up and quietly walked into the house. Zhang Xiaoxiao had a particularly sweet sleep; when she woke up, it was already past three in the afternoon. She opened her eyes, stretched lazily, and then stood up from the chair. She walked into the house and found Zhao Guangcai sitting by the table reading a book.
He was so focused on reading that he didn't even notice her coming in. Zhang Xiaoxiao walked over to his side and leaned in to take a glance at the book in his hands. It was a copy of the Book of Songs.
"Hey, you're reading the Book of Songs?" Zhang Xiaoxiao exclaimed in surprise.
"Mm." Zhao Guangcai nodded, then put down the book and looked up at her. "Did you wake up?"
"Mm." Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
"Do you want some water?" Zhao Guangcai asked again.
"Yes," Zhang Xiaoxiao quickly nodded.
Zhao Guangcai stood up, walked to the table, and poured her a glass of water.
"Thank you," Zhang Xiaoxiao said as she took the cup and tilted her head back to drink it all.
"Drink slowly," Zhao Guangcai said gently as he watched her.
"Mm." Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded, then handed the cup back to him. "I want more."
Zhao Guangcai poured her another glass of water and handed it to her.
Zhang Xiaoxiao took the cup and drank more than half of it. After finishing, she handed the cup back to him and sat down beside him, looking at him with a cheerful smile. "Zhao Guangcai, I'm really happy."
"What are you happy about?" Zhao Guangcai asked, puzzled.
"Hehe." Zhang Xiaoxiao chuckled softly and then wrapped her arms around his arm. "I feel like my life is very happy right now."
Hearing this, Zhao Guangcai was momentarily taken aback. He looked at her, a complex expression flashing in his eyes. He didn't say anything, just quietly allowed her to hold him.
After a while, he suddenly asked, " Xiaoxiao, will you always stay by my side?"
"Of course," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied without hesitation. "I will always be with you."
Zhao Guangcai looked at her, a hint of relief appearing in his eyes.
He smiled lightly, then lowered his head and continued reading. Zhang Xiaoxiao looked at his profile, a sweet smile appearing on her face. She thought to herself how wonderful it would be if they could stay like this forever.
