Bun Head Girl I have seen her twice. I remember she is an intern under Hua Zhang and her name is Zheng Zheng.
Seeing me anxious, Zheng Zheng explained lightly: “She is asleep.” Only then did I realize my legs were a bit weak, relying on Huang Di for support.
Once Huang Di saw that I was steady, he silently blocked the door he had kicked open again.
They must have had a tough couple of days, probably staying up all night, and I don't know how long they actually rested. I asked Huang Di to pretend to take a blanket out of his bag and cover her with it. Then I inquired about what Zheng Zheng had experienced over the past two days. Zheng Zheng was both startled and scared, but fortunately, her logic was still somewhat coherent.
While Hua Zhang was drawing in the office, she found a deserted place to slack off. The mutated individuals caused chaos. By the time she realized things were going south, everyone was already fleeing in all directions. Zheng Zheng wanted to take the elevator, but there were also mutated individuals among the crowd gathered at the elevator doors. In her panic, Hua Zhang rushed over and pulled her to take the stairs instead.
When they reached the fifth floor, they encountered a man crawling on the ceiling, followed by a horde of Zombies, blocking the stairs. They had no choice but to flee upward and were eventually cornered into a small room on the eleventh floor. The middle-aged woman suddenly appeared in the room, screaming frantically, and they worked together to tie her up.
At this point, Hua Zhang woke up and was not surprised to see me with a strange man here. I had never seen her with such a heavy and exhausted expression before, as if she had gone through some torment, barely holding on with what little spirit she had left. It was then that I remembered to share the water and food from my bag with them.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
Hua Zhang shook her head and took a sip of water.
I thought we would embrace and cry when we met, but the situation was clearly much worse than that.
Hua Zhang appeared calm as if she had lost all hope, making me hesitant to ask anything or make any moves. Her gaze fell vacantly on the water bottle as she spoke: "I fell asleep while drawing yesterday afternoon and dreamed that you found me in this warehouse. At first, I didn't understand what was happening. But when we got to the eleventh floor and entered this room, everything became clear." After hiding here, she forced herself to have several dreams.
"The range of mutations is worldwide. Wen Bie, we no longer have parents." Hua Zhang held me tightly in her arms, "But it's okay; you can save them. Wen Bie, let's go find them."
The first time I saw her, she was in a state of mental breakdown. Huazhang was very strong-willed, always clear about her goals and full of drive, giving me strength. When she broke down, I had to hold myself together as well. I was somewhat mentally prepared for the death of my parents.
"What do you mean I can save them?" I asked.
"Your Ability not only prevents Zombies from attacking you, but your blood can also allow those turned into Zombies to retain their consciousness."
In that moment, my first feeling was not joy at the possibility of saving my loved ones, but rather a chilling sense of danger.
I took off my coat and rolled it up to make a pillow for her, wiping the tears from her face and comforting her, "It's getting dark now. Tomorrow we'll go home first and then make plans. I'll keep watch tonight; you should rest well."
I silently calculated in my mind that tomorrow I would change our scents, and Huang Di would be more than enough to protect us. As for those two, I hoped they would stay close and not cause any trouble.
Huazhang slept soundly for the first half of the night but began to frown and have nightmares during the latter half. It seemed like she had used her Ability; no matter how much I called her, she wouldn't wake up.
When dawn began to break, I stretched my sore shoulders and walked to the window to observe the situation. Suddenly, a hand pressed against the glass. I jumped back in surprise, taking half a step back. Huang Di quickly noticed something was off and moved beside me.
The owner of the hand revealed his face—it was the man we encountered downstairs. He clearly saw what was happening inside; upon seeing the bound woman, he pressed closer to the glass, his features distorted against it. He exaggeratedly mouthed, "So you're here?"
The dazed woman who was tied up suddenly began to struggle desperately upon seeing him.
He didn't attempt to come through the window but quickly climbed away instead. Things were looking grim; this man clearly had a grudge against the middle-aged woman inside.
I untied the ropes binding the woman and removed the cloth from her mouth. Fortunately, she didn't scream; she just looked at us with fear and curled up into a ball.
Huazhang woke up from her nightmare, drenched in cold sweat, and grabbed me to leave. I didn’t understand what was happening but quickly grabbed my bag and signaled Huang Di to open the door.
However, we were too late. As we reached the hallway, we encountered a large group of Zombies led by a Gecko Man coming our way, forcing us to run upstairs. Huang Di and Huazhang ran side by side while I stayed protected behind him; beside me was Zheng Zheng, with a screaming woman trailing behind us.
I ran to the familiar rooftop and quickly closed the door, taking a moment to catch my breath. I estimated that the man would soon be able to climb up from the outside of the building, but this time I couldn't bring so many Zombies up with me. For now, it was safe, and Hua Zhang also let out a sigh of relief, pulling me far away from that woman.
"Stay away from her; she's pretending to be crazy. Her name is Park Chuan. She deliberately closed the door on the eleventh floor after luring that man in. Didn't expect it to backfire, did she? She was chased into a dead end," Hua Zhang said. What kind of grudge could lead to this? Even in the apocalypse, she wanted to kill her.
Park Chuan's hair was disheveled, and her expression was frantic. There was blood seeping from her khaki pants at the calf—she had been bitten.
She screamed, "Does he dare to kill me? The one who should die is him! He was fired because he couldn't do anything right; why should he blame me?" I saw the Gecko Man climbing up the wall behind her, his expression cold and sinister. I didn't warn her and let her get tackled. Even though I watched her get knocked down, in the next chaotic moment, she was by my side, biting my hand. Right, she could teleport herself to other places.
She did it on purpose; she intentionally got bitten. Pretending to be frightened and disoriented, but after being untied, she didn't run away; instead, she kept following us. She had heard our conversation and wanted to become a conscious Zombie.
Blood flowed down my palm. Huang Di let out a howl and transformed into a large dog that lunged at Park Chuan. Her head nearly got crushed under his paw. I wanted to see how the Zombie that drank my blood managed to maintain its sanity and spare Huang Di's feet.
Park Chuan did not stop her transformation; she completely turned into a Zombie. With Huang Di's kick, it was conservatively estimated that several bones in her body must have broken. But she had completely lost her sense of pain and twisted her body back up to stand. Her face lost all expression; or more accurately, she lost her humanity.
The fear that had always been present on her face, the joy of retaining her consciousness, even the despicable satisfaction after drinking blood—all of it vanished.
"I'm so hungry," Park Chuan said as she scanned us with her eyes. The Gecko Man was closest to her at that moment. Yet she ran towards Zheng Zheng, who was farthest away from her, calmly seeking advantage while avoiding danger. Zheng Zheng had been terrified by Huang Di's sudden transformation and had distanced herself from us. Now being chased by Park Chuan, who was even more terrifying to her, she instinctively ran toward us.
Huang Di was still furious and kicked Park Chuan away before baring his teeth at Zheng Zheng, warning her not to come closer.
Park Chuan, unable to take human form, got up and laughed.
"I am now at the top of the Darwin tree diagram. You all used to be worker ants in society, and now you're still just bugs." Even after taking the worst beating, Park Chuan had to boast.
Gecko Man took advantage of the moment and dragged Park Chuan down from the high building together.
Park Chuan's last words gradually faded away: "I’m waiting for your death notice."
As the chaos ended, dawn broke. The weather was the same as yesterday; it hadn’t snowed, yet it felt as if a heavy snowfall had just occurred. The blue sky was tinged with gray.
Huang Di transformed back into human form, but when Hua Zhang wanted to bandage me, he insisted on using his clumsy little dog paws to tie the bandages.
I was distracted, my eyes unconsciously glancing at the spot where the two had just fallen, feeling that something was off.
"There was no sound of them hitting the ground," Hua Zhang pointed out.
She said, "Don't worry about it. One can stick to walls, and the other can teleport; whether they are dead or alive doesn’t matter."
Hua Zhang sat on the ground, rummaging through her things while eating and telling us what she had heard about the events leading up to this.
"That guy is named Zhou An. He was the one who brought Park Chuan into the company when he first joined. Later, when the big boss promoted Park Chuan, they had quite a few conflicts. Zhou An once fainted from working overtime due to a fever and hit his head, which left him unable to speak."
I fiddled with the bow in my hands, feeling somewhat lost.
Indeed, living among people means facing not only disasters themselves but also their accompanying burdens—those who have shed their human skins.
"Hua Zhang, can you see where my mom and uncle are? We should go find them."
Hua Zhang shook her head and told me she was mistaken.
"Don't you realize? Wen Bie. Although Park Chuan is a bad person by nature, after becoming a Zombie, even if she retains some consciousness, she is no longer human."
"Wen Bie, do you know what your ability represents?"
I knew: "A new intelligent species that feeds on humans."
Hua Zhang said, "Exactly. You cannot let anyone know about your ability. Ambitious people will do everything they can to make you create an army for them, even if it starts out as a way to eliminate Zombies."
The reason I instinctively felt a chill was precisely this—once someone is exploited, the consequences are unimaginable.
"Should we go home first?"
Hua Zhang held me tightly, as if overcoming fear while also conveying strength.
She avoided Zheng Zheng, who had come closer, and whispered in my ear: "We can't go back to that place anymore. I saw a man; he has a mental type Ability that can control Zombies. You married him; you helped him create many armies and establish a base."
It is Shang Yi.
This development is truly outrageous, but upon closer examination, it doesn't seem entirely impossible. When I was at his place, both Huang Di and I unknowingly let our guard down.
People should be a bit more cautious; one shouldn't confront everything head-on. I need to run. The three of us can find a deserted place, cultivate some land, and live well, returning to nature.
“Shang Yi, he is the person you dreamed of. Does he have control over the Zombie nearby?”
Hua Zhang said, “I’m not sure.”
“It’s fine; let’s keep our distance from them.” In this city, human hearts are treacherous, and dangers lurk everywhere. Finding Hua Zhang is enough; I don’t have the ability to save the world.
The world might still rely on people like Shang Yi to organize strength for salvation. In such a vast expanse, hiding is certainly possible.
I gave the house keys to Zheng Zheng and sent her on her way to the outskirts. Shang Yi wants to establish a base and will surely gather young people like Zheng Zheng.
The three of us collected supplies as we walked along.
All human machinery has stopped; the Earth’s self-cleaning ability is incredibly strong. In less than half a month, stars and the Milky Way appeared above us every night.
Hua Zhang occasionally dreams of Shang Yi. It turns out he is a supplier with plenty of resources, more than enough to establish a base in the early stages.
He learned about my abilities from Zheng Zheng and instructed his people at the base to find me. Of course, he wouldn’t be able to find me; I have no attachment to my hometown and have gone far away.
Chen Zhong serves as an officer at the base entrance, screening each person for infection. I actually saw that he only has half of his mother left. Without letting Zheng Zheng convey any words to him, he can just consider me untrustworthy.
We found a villa halfway up a northern mountain. There are hot springs and cultivated land here.
Among the three of us, Huang Di is the best at farming—he knows how to dig holes.
We mainly rely on collected supplies for living; when the season comes, we depend on nature's gifts. What we grow ourselves isn’t just food; it’s happiness.
This world has suffered greatly but seems to have regained its freedom.
