"Cough, cough, let me do it," Zhang Xiaoxiao said, clearing her throat.
"Oh, sure," Doctor Li handed her the syringe.
Zhang Xiaoxiao took the syringe and asked Zhao Guangcai to roll up his sleeve.
Zhao Guangcai obediently rolled up his sleeve. His arm was strong and muscular, with a bronze complexion that looked very healthy.
Zhang Xiaoxiao glanced at him and felt her face heat up; she quickly averted her gaze.
"You two make such a lovely couple," Doctor Li said with a smile.
Zhang Xiaoxiao awkwardly smiled back, unsure of what to say. She was used to the medical environment from her past life where patients needed to explain their conditions themselves; if someone else spoke for them, they would often be reprimanded. That's why she had asked Zhao Guangcai to talk to the doctor himself earlier.
However, she forgot that this was a rural area, not a hospital, and Doctor Li was an elder who had watched them grow up, so he naturally wouldn't mind these things.
Doctor Li demonstrated the injection for her, and then Zhang Xiaoxiao gave Zhao Guangcai the shot. After administering the injection, Doctor Li reminded them of some precautions, such as not bathing for five days and only using a damp cloth to wipe their bodies.
"Okay, we will remember. Thank you, Doctor Li," Zhang Xiaoxiao said with a smile.
"You're welcome. You two can go back now," Doctor Li waved them off.
"Alright," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
The two left the clinic. On their way home, they saw a small car parked outside the Li Family's house.
"Hey, whose car is that?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked in surprise.
"I don't know," Zhao Guangcai shook his head.
"It looks like it belongs to Zhao Xiaosong," Zhang Xiaoxiao guessed.
She was not unfamiliar with cars from this era; in her past life, she had encountered various vehicles, from old-fashioned jeeps to later models like BMWs, Mercedes-Benzes, and Audis. So this small car did not seem unusual to her.
However, for Zhao Guangcai and the villagers, this car was quite a rare sight.
Zhao Guangcai appeared indifferent towards the car; he silently stared at Zhang Xiaoxiao. Seeing her fixated on the car made him think she liked it too, and a hint of regret and disappointment flashed in his eyes.
Zhang Xiaoxiao did not notice his unusual reaction; she took his hand and said, "Guangcai, let's hurry back."
"Mm," Zhao Guangcai replied softly.
Once they got home, Zhang Xiaoxiao suddenly remembered that she needed to boil water for Zhao Guangcai's medicine. But what if she couldn't start a fire?
"Guangcai, can you start a fire?" Zhang Xiaoxiao looked at Zhao Guangcai for help and asked.
"I can," Zhao Guangcai nodded.
"Then help me start a fire," Zhang Xiaoxiao said with a smile.
"Okay," Zhao Guangcai readily agreed.
He got off the bed, put on his shoes, and walked to the kitchen.
Zhang Xiaoxiao quickly followed him.
Zhao Guangcai squatted in front of the stove, took some firewood and straw, then lit a lighter, igniting the straw and stuffing it into the stove. He then arranged the firewood on top.
Soon, flames roared to life.
"Wow, Guangcai, you're amazing," Zhang Xiaoxiao admired as she looked at him in awe.
"What's so amazing about that?" Zhao Guangcai replied with a shy smile.
"I just think you're impressive," Zhang Xiaoxiao said, tilting her head playfully.
"Really?" A glimmer of amusement flashed in Zhao Guangcai's eyes.
"Of course," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded seriously.
Zhao Guangcai smiled and fell silent, quietly watching the flames.
Zhang Xiaoxiao found him charming like this; despite his worn clothes, his extraordinary aura shone through.
" Xiaoxiao?" Zhao Guangcai suddenly turned to look at her and called out.
"Mm?" Zhang Xiaoxiao snapped back to attention.
"The water is boiling; you can take out the medicine now," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Okay," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded eagerly.
She went to get the medicine.
By the time she returned with it, Zhao Guangcai had already poured the boiled water into a bowl.
"Take your medicine," Zhang Xiaoxiao handed him the medicine and said.
"Mm," Zhao Guangcai nodded, took the medicine, and swallowed it in one go.
"Quickly drink some water to soothe your throat," Zhang Xiaoxiao immediately handed him a bowl of water and said.
"Mm," Zhao Guangcai nodded again, took the bowl of water, and drank a few sips.
"How do you feel?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked with concern.
"Pretty good," Zhao Guangcai replied with a smile.
"Then you should rest now," Zhang Xiaoxiao urged him.
"I don't want to rest," Zhao Guangcai shook his head.
"You just had an injection; you need to rest," Zhang Xiaoxiao said seriously.
"I'm not tired at all," Zhao Guangcai insisted.
"No way, you have to rest," Zhang Xiaoxiao said firmly.
"Alright," Zhao Guangcai conceded reluctantly with a nod.
"Hurry up and go," Zhang Xiaoxiao urged again.
"What about you?" Zhao Guangcai asked as he looked at her.
"I'll go check on the little fox in the woodshed," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
"I'll go with you," Zhao Guangcai said.
"No need, you should rest well," Zhang Xiaoxiao shook her head.
"Then I'll lie down for a bit; call me if you need help," Zhao Guangcai advised her.
"Okay, I understand," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
With that, Zhao Guangcai went back to rest.
After Zhang Xiaoxiao cleaned up the dishes, she prepared to go to the woodshed to check on the little fox.
At that moment, she heard arguing coming from next door.
Curious, Zhang Xiaoxiao stepped out of the kitchen and discovered that Sun Qiuhua and Zhao Xiaosong were arguing.
So they were still here.
Zhang Xiaoxiao decided to go next door to watch the drama unfold.
In the neighboring yard,
"Auntie, please give Xiu Mei to me; I will take good care of her," Zhao Xiaosong pleaded earnestly.
"You wish," Sun Qiuhua shouted angrily.
"Auntie, what will it take for you to let me have Xiu Mei?" Zhao Xiaosong frowned.
"I've told you, there's no way you're taking my daughter," Sun Qiuhua glared at him and said.
"Auntie, this isn't as simple as you think; my mom will never give up on Xiu Mei," Zhao Xiaosong said in a low voice.
"Hmph, she was the one who handed Xiu Mei over to me in the first place; now that she wants her daughter back, there's no way that's happening," Sun Qiuhua snorted coldly.
"Auntie, this matter is not as straightforward as you believe," Zhao Xiaosong frowned again.
"I don't care; I absolutely won't let you take my daughter away," Sun Qiuhua stated firmly.
"Auntie, why must you be so stubborn?" Zhao Xiaosong sighed.
"Stop talking nonsense and get out of here," Sun Qiuhua pointed towards the door and said.
