"Xiaoxiao, it's time to eat," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Okay," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
As Zhang Xiaoxiao ate, she glanced out the window with her peripheral vision.
After a while, a sudden sound of footsteps came from outside.
Zhang Xiaoxiao looked up in surprise and turned to the window.
"Guangcai, look!" Zhang Xiaoxiao pointed outside.
Zhao Guangcai followed Zhang Xiaoxiao's finger and saw many villagers holding candles, walking towards the Li Family.
"Why are they all heading to the Li Family?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked in confusion.
"I don't know," Zhao Guangcai shook his head.
"That's really strange," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Never mind, let's eat," Zhao Guangcai suggested.
"Okay," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
Zhang Xiaoxiao lowered her head and continued eating.
...
The Li Family.
The Li Family was packing their bags, preparing to leave.
Suddenly, a noisy commotion erupted outside.
"Mom, why is it so noisy outside?" Li Xiumei asked.
"I don't know," Sun Qiuhua shook her head.
"I'll go take a look," Li Xiumei said.
"Okay," Sun Qiuhua nodded.
Li Xiumei stepped out of the house and into the yard. She saw many villagers gathered in her yard and was momentarily stunned.
"Xiu Mei, are you all leaving?" one Aunt asked.
"Yes," Li Xiumei nodded.
"Xiu Mei, what will we do if you leave?" another Aunt said.
"That's right, Xiu Mei, you can't leave," yet another Aunt added.
"What are you all doing?" Li Xiumei asked warily, watching the crowd.
"Xiu Mei, don't misunderstand; we just can't bear to see you go," one Aunt explained.
"Exactly, Xiu Mei, we're all from the same village; if you leave, it will make us feel really sad," another Aunt said.
"You all..." Li Xiumei didn't know what to say.
At that moment, Sun Qiuhua walked out of the house.
"Xiu Mei, what happened?" Sun Qiuhua asked.
"Mom, they..." Li Xiumei pointed at the group of Aunts, unsure of how to express herself.
"Qiuhua, are you really leaving?" Aunt Qian approached and held Sun Qiuhua's hand.
"Yes," Sun Qiuhua nodded.
"Qiuhua, why are you leaving so suddenly? You didn't even tell us in advance?" Aunt Xinghua also grabbed Sun Qiuhua's hand.
"I..." Sun Qiuhua tried to pull her hand away but was tightly held by both Aunts.
"Qiuhua, we are good friends; how can you not tell us?" Aunt Qian said.
"I..." The smile on Sun Qiuhua's face was very stiff.
"Qiuhua, will you come back to see us in the future?" Aunt Xinghua asked.
"Of course, I will definitely come back to see you," Sun Qiuhua replied.
"That's good," Aunt Qian and Aunt Xinghua smiled even wider upon hearing this.
"Qiuhua, once you leave this time, we probably won't have a chance to meet again," one Aunt said.
"That won't happen; we will come back when we have the chance," Sun Qiuhua assured them.
"Qiuhua, just make sure you don't forget us when you leave," another Aunt said.
"I won't, I won't," Sun Qiuhua quickly shook her head.
"Qiuhua, take these things with you." That Aunt stuffed something into Sun Qiuhua's arms.
"This... how can I accept this?" Sun Qiuhua declined.
"Qiuhua, don't be polite; these are just a little token from us," that Aunt insisted.
"No, I can't take it," Sun Qiuhua firmly refused.
She knew that once she accepted these things, it would be hard to explain later. These people were only trying to get close and give gifts because they saw the Li Family was about to go to the capital.
"Qiuhua, these are just our small tokens of goodwill; if you don't accept them, it means you look down on us," that Aunt said.
"Yes, Qiuhua, these things aren't valuable; just accept them," another Aunt added.
"You all..." Sun Qiuhua was so angry she couldn't speak.
She didn't expect these people to be so difficult.
"Mom, what should we do?" Li Xiumei whispered.
"We can't accept them," Sun Qiuhua shook her head.
"But they..." Li Xiumei looked at everyone, unsure of what to do.
"How about..." Li Xiumei tentatively asked.
"No way," Sun Qiuhua firmly denied.
"Mom..." Li Xiumei wanted to persuade Sun Qiuhua again.
"Xiu Mei, stop talking," Sun Qiuhua said.
"Oh," Li Xiumei replied, closing her mouth.
At that moment, Zhang Xiaoxiao and Zhao Guangcai also arrived at the Li Family's yard.
"Wow, why are there so many people?" Zhang Xiaoxiao exclaimed in surprise.
"Who knows," Zhao Guangcai shook his head.
"I see they all have things in their hands; could they be here to give gifts?" Zhang Xiaoxiao speculated.
"Probably," Zhao Guangcai nodded.
"These people are too shrewd," Zhang Xiaoxiao remarked.
"What do you mean?" Zhao Guangcai asked.
"They must have seen that the Li Family is going to the capital, so they hurried over to get close and give gifts," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
"So you mean they are here to curry favor with the Li Family?" Zhao Guangcai asked.
"Pretty much," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
"Then they are quite clever," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Of course," Zhang Xiaoxiao said proudly.
"Xiaoxiao, do you see who that is?" Zhao Guangcai pointed to a woman ahead.
"That is..." Zhang Xiaoxiao looked closely and then suddenly realized, "That's Aunt Xinghua."
"She came too?" Zhao Guangcai was somewhat surprised.
"Yes," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
"It seems the Li Family has quite a high status in the village," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Absolutely," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied proudly.
