At the night market, Lu Yuan quickly set up the stall for me and then hid to the side. I was waiting idly for customers to arrive. Just then, Ge Reyping's sharp voice rang out: "Li Jingwen!"
I instinctively looked up, and a slap landed hard on my face. "Smack—" The crisp sound of the slap echoed throughout the night market.
Seeing this, Lu Yuan rushed out to stop Ge Reyping, who was about to hit me again. I covered my face and looked at them with red eyes: "Mom, brother, why are you hitting me?"
Li Guangsheng coldly stared at me: "Li Jingwen, who allowed you to arrange a loan behind my back?"
I shook my head: "I didn't do it, I don't know."
"You dare to lie!" Li Guangsheng said sternly. "My classmate sent me a message saying I've become a dishonest person. Li Jingwen, how could you leak my information without telling me? What are you trying to do?"
I bit my lip, my eyes red and looking pitiful. Seeing this, Ge Reyping couldn't help but curse: "Li Jingwen, you've really grown bold. How dare you take my information to get a loan behind my back? Now I'm a dishonest person too! Do you know what that means for someone like me who works in a hotel?"
"Li Jingwen, are you trying to ruin me?"
I pretended to be strong:
"Mom, I didn't, I've never heard of any loan. You must be mistaken!"
Ge Reyping pushed me away, "How dare you lie!"
As she spoke, she rolled up her sleeves, ready to fight.
I fell to the ground, covering my sore cheek, crying uncontrollably:
"Mom, I'm your biological daughter.
I've raised my brother since he was little; how could I possibly harm you?"
"For all these years, I've done whatever you asked me to do.
You told me to go east, and I wouldn't dare go west. All the money I've earned
has gone to you and my brother; I've even given you all my savings.
Why do you still treat me like this?"
"Why won't you believe me just once?"
Ge Reyping trembled with anger:
"Li Jingwen, stop pretending to be pitiful.
You took my information to get a loan; that's a fact.
If you don't pay me back today, I'll call the police on you!"
Li Guangsheng chimed in, "Yeah, we'll call the police on you!"
I feigned innocence and looked around at the bystanders:
"Uncles and aunties, please judge for yourselves.
I've been working since I was eighteen, giving all my earnings
to my mom and my brother. My mom asked me to set up a stall at the night market,
so I did. My mom wanted my brother to relax a bit,
so I gave them all my money."
"But why don't they believe me?"
"I just want them to have a better life. Am I wrong?"
The bystanders pointed at Ge Reyping and Li Guangsheng, saying,
"This little girl is so pitiful. She's so young and already working to earn money, yet this is the result."
"Yeah, I see that this girl's mother and brother clearly treat her like an outsider."
"I remember this girl; she sets up her stall before dawn every day, earning every penny through hard work. It's really not easy."
Seeing this, Ge Reyping quickly explained,
"That's not true! This little brat used our information to take out loans. We are the victims here."
The crowd began to voice their accusations against Ge Reyping and Li Guangsheng.
Ge Reyping's face turned ugly as she glared at me fiercely:
"Li Jingwen, you little brat! How dare you slander me? Do you believe I won't beat you to death?"
