The summer on Egret Island was stifling, like a sauna, with cicadas endlessly chirping in the trees. At 13 years old, I met Duan Jiayu for the first time through my brother, Sang Yan. "My roommate, Duan Jiayu, a genius from the Computer Science department, incredibly handsome," he said. At that moment, I was holding a watermelon and biting into it so that juice was dripping everywhere; I almost choked at his words. "Bro, stop bragging. Is he really that amazing?"
"If he’s that amazing, would I be lying to you?" Sang Yan had a look that said "don't doubt me," and he flicked my forehead. "He's only a tiny bit worse than me."
I pouted, unimpressed by my brother's description, and continued to eat my watermelon. Until there was a knock on the door, Sang Yan lazily called out, "Coming!"
The next second, a tall and striking figure appeared at the door. He wore a simple white T-shirt and jeans, but his extraordinary looks were hard to hide as he leaned casually against the doorframe with a playful smile on his lips. I was stunned; the watermelon in my hand fell to the ground with a thud, splattering juice everywhere without me even noticing.
"Why are you here?" Sang Yan seemed unfazed by Duan Jiayu's arrival, speaking in a familiar tone.
Duan Jiayu finally looked up from his phone, casually scanning the living room before his gaze landed on me, who was still in shock. He raised an eyebrow and asked, "Are you Sang Yan's little junior Sister?"
The term "little junior Sister " struck me like a blow, making me feel both embarrassed and flustered as my face turned bright red. I fumbled to pick up the watermelon but only made things messier.
Seeing this, Duan Jiayu chuckled lightly, bent down to pick up the fallen watermelon, and casually tossed it into the trash can with smooth motions as if it were an insignificant task.
"Hello, I'm Duan Jiayu."
He extended his hand toward me with that same nonchalant smile on his face, but there seemed to be a hint of subtle warmth in his deep eyes. I stared at him blankly for a moment before finally reacting; I hurriedly wiped my hands and gently shook his hand.
"Sang... I..."
I lowered my head, my voice barely audible as I dared not look into his eyes.
From that day on, the name Duan Jiayu was deeply etched in my heart, and my youthful heart was completely captivated.
"Why are you here?" Duan Jiayu furrowed his brows slightly, a hint of confusion in his tone.
"Uh... I came to the library to borrow a book and just happened to run into you," I explained, my eyes flickering nervously as I tightly clutched a copy of Western Economics, my knuckles turning white.
Seeing her nervousness, Duan Jiayu's lips curled into a barely noticeable smile. This girl, clearly anxious inside, still tried to maintain a calm demeanor as if it were a coincidence.
"Oh? Are you interested in economics too?" Duan Jiayu asked casually, glancing at the book in my hands.
"Yes... yes!" I nodded eagerly, as if grasping at a lifeline, holding the book close to my chest. "I think... economics is really interesting..."
"Is that so?" Duan Jiayu raised an eyebrow, not exposing her feigned composure.
I felt my cheeks heat up, my heart racing. Stealing a glance at Duan Jiayu, I found him looking back at me with a playful smile in his deep-set eyes, as if he could see right through my thoughts. Instantly more flustered, I lowered my head and dared not meet his gaze again.
"Um... I'm going to borrow some books now!" I blurted out incoherently before running away, leaving Duan Jiayu standing there, watching her flustered figure with an increasingly deepening smile.
As the sun set, the campus bustled with people. I walked along the path with a few friends from the club, discussing club activities.
"Are you really going to join the student council?" a girl asked.
"Well, I've made up my mind," I nodded, my tone firm.
"But the student council is going to be very busy. You'll have to balance your studies and club activities, and it will be tough," another girl said with concern.
"It's okay, I can handle it," I smiled lightly, though inside I felt quite anxious.
Ever since that day I ran into Duan Jiayu at the library, I had resolved to work harder to get closer to him. I found out that Duan Jiayu was the president of the student council, so I signed up without hesitation. Even though I wasn't particularly interested in the work of the student council, I wanted to seize every opportunity to interact with Duan Jiayu.
"I hope you're not doing this for..." a boy next to me suddenly spoke up, giving me a meaningful glance, hesitating to finish his sentence.
I knew exactly what he meant. My cheeks flushed with embarrassment as I quickly waved my hand in denial. "That's not it! Don't say such things!"
"Haha, I was just joking. Don't take it seriously," the boy laughed and teased.
That night, the student council office was brightly lit. A few other new members and I were organizing documents. Duan Jiayu sat at his desk, focused on reviewing papers. His handsome and deep profile looked especially charming under the light.
I secretly glanced at him, my heart racing as if it were about to leap out of my chest. Taking a deep breath, I tried to suppress my excitement and continued organizing the files.
Suddenly, Duan Jiayu put down the documents in his hands, stood up, and walked over to the water dispenser.
Seeing this, I quickly set down my files, grabbed my water cup, and walked over to the dispenser as well.
