Zhang Xiaoxiao and Zhao Guangcai were quietly eating in the kitchen while heavy rain poured outside, with water cascading down from the eaves like a curtain of water.
"This rain is really heavy," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Once the rain stops, we can go up the mountain to pick mushrooms," Zhao Guangcai replied.
"Really?" Zhang Xiaoxiao exclaimed in delight.
"Yes," Zhao Guangcai nodded.
"That's great! Let's go as soon as we can," Zhang Xiaoxiao hurriedly said.
"Not so fast, let's wait until the rain stops," Zhao Guangcai advised.
"Oh," Zhang Xiaoxiao said, feeling a bit disappointed.
After finishing their meal, the rain had not yet stopped. Zhang Xiaoxiao leaned against the window, watching the rain outside, sighing, "Why isn't this rain stopping?"
"It'll probably keep going for a while longer," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Sigh, it seems we won't be able to go mushroom picking today," Zhang Xiaoxiao said sadly.
Seeing her downcast expression, Zhao Guangcai furrowed his brow and thought for a moment before saying, "You stay here and wait; I'll go out for a bit."
"Where are you going?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked curiously.
"To buy something," Zhao Guangcai replied.
"What are you buying?" Zhang Xiaoxiao inquired.
"I'll tell you once the rain stops," Zhao Guangcai said mysteriously.
"Oh," Zhang Xiaoxiao responded.
Zhao Guangcai put on his shoes, donned his hat, and took an umbrella before stepping outside.
Zhang Xiaoxiao watched him disappear into the rain, filled with curiosity about what he was going to buy. What could it be that he was being so secretive about?
She rested her chin on her hand and continued to gaze at the rain outside. The downpour grew heavier, showing no signs of letting up.
Zhang Xiaoxiao felt increasingly disappointed; it seemed there was indeed no way to go mushroom picking today. She lay bored against the window, observing the rainy scene outside.
After a while, the intensity of the rain finally began to lessen and eventually stopped altogether.
Excitedly, Zhang Xiaoxiao ran out of the kitchen and into the yard.
"Wow, the rain has finally stopped!" she exclaimed happily.
She looked up at the sky, took a deep breath, and enjoyed the fresh air after the rain. The ground was wet, but the sky was a brilliant blue with not a cloud in sight.
"What a beautiful day!" Zhang Xiaoxiao said with a smile.
"Yes," came Zhao Guangcai's voice from behind her.
"You’re back!" Zhang Xiaoxiao turned around to look at Zhao Guangcai and smiled.
"Mm." Zhao Guangcai replied.
"What did you buy?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked curiously.
"Nothing much," Zhao Guangcai said lightly.
"Impossible, you were out for so long. How could you not buy anything?" Zhang Xiaoxiao said, not believing him.
"I really didn't," Zhao Guangcai emphasized.
"I don't believe you; you're lying to me," Zhang Xiaoxiao pouted.
"I'm really not lying to you," Zhao Guangcai said helplessly.
"Then show me what you bought," Zhang Xiaoxiao insisted.
"I can't do that right now," Zhao Guangcai replied.
"Why not?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked, confused.
"I'll tell you later," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Hmph, if you don't tell me, I won't play with you," Zhang Xiaoxiao said stubbornly.
"Alright, stop messing around. I'm going to change my clothes, and then we'll go up the mountain to pick mushrooms," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Really?" Zhang Xiaoxiao said happily.
"Mm." Zhao Guangcai nodded.
"Then hurry up and change!" Zhang Xiaoxiao urged.
Zhao Guangcai nodded and walked into the bedroom.
After a while, he came out dressed. He wore old jeans, a white t-shirt, and a pair of sneakers, looking like a handsome neighbor boy.
"Let's go," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Mm." Zhang Xiaoxiao replied cheerfully.
The two of them walked out of the yard and headed up the mountain.
Although the rain had stopped, the mountain was still slippery, and one could easily fall if not careful.
Zhang Xiaoxiao walked cautiously, afraid of slipping.
"Be careful," Zhao Guangcai reminded her.
"Mm." Zhang Xiaoxiao responded.
After about twenty minutes of walking, they finally reached the top of the mountain.
The mountain was lush with trees, flowers blooming everywhere, and colorful mushrooms scattered across the fields, looking very beautiful.
"Wow, so many mushrooms!" Zhang Xiaoxiao exclaimed excitedly.
"When the rain stops completely, there will be even more mushrooms," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Then let's hurry and pick some!" Zhang Xiaoxiao urged eagerly.
"Okay," Zhao Guangcai smiled.
The two began to pick mushrooms. Since it had just rained, the mushrooms were very clean and only needed a light wipe before being placed in the basket.
"Wow, this one is so big."
"This one looks nice too."
"This is delicious too."
Zhang Xiaoxiao excitedly picked mushrooms, occasionally letting out sounds of surprise.
Although she grew up in the countryside, her family's poor conditions meant her parents rarely took her to the mountains, let alone to pick mushrooms. So this was her first time picking mushrooms by herself, and it felt very fresh.
Seeing Zhang Xiaoxiao's excited expression, Zhao Guangcai couldn't help but smile.
The two of them picked two full baskets of mushrooms before happily heading home.
"Today was really a great harvest," Zhang Xiaoxiao said cheerfully.
"We can come back to pick more tomorrow," Zhao Guangcai replied.
"Yeah," Zhang Xiaoxiao said happily.
Once they got home, they spread the mushrooms out to dry in the yard.
"Finally, we can rest," Zhang Xiaoxiao said as she sat down in a chair and rubbed her waist.
"Tired?" Zhao Guangcai asked.
"Yeah," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
"Then I'll go make dinner; you can rest for a while," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Okay," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
Zhao Guangcai went into the kitchen and started to get busy.
After a while, Zhao Guangcai came out with the dishes.
"Time to eat," Zhao Guangcai called out.
"Coming," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
The two of them sat down at the table and began to eat.
"The mushrooms today are really fresh," Zhang Xiaoxiao praised.
"We can come back to pick more next year," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Yeah," Zhang Xiaoxiao said happily.
The two enjoyed their meal, relishing the tranquility and deliciousness after the rain.
