The rain was pouring down heavily, and Zhang Xiaoxiao, wearing a bamboo hat and long pants, was making her way up the mountain, stepping in puddles along the way. The rain was intense, and the mountain path was slippery; one misstep could lead to a nasty fall. Fortunately, Zhang Xiaoxiao had prepared ahead of time by wearing long pants; otherwise, she would have been covered in mud.
Zhang Xiaoxiao climbed step by step and finally reached the first small slope. She turned around to look down the mountain, but all she could see was a white haze; nothing was visible. She found a sturdy branch to use as a walking stick and continued on her way. The mountains were very quiet, with only the sound of rain falling and no other noises.
As Zhang Xiaoxiao walked along the mountain path, it made a rustling sound beneath her feet. Her gaze was determined; no matter what, she had to find Zhao Guangcai. He had gone out early in the morning to hunt in the mountains and had not returned yet, which made Zhang Xiaoxiao feel worried.
After walking for a while, Zhang Xiaoxiao suddenly heard a faint sobbing sound. Instantly alert, she thought about the deep forest—could there be something sinister lurking about? She felt a bit scared but reminded herself that Zhao Guangcai was still up in the mountains; she couldn't let fear take over.
Gathering her courage, Zhang Xiaoxiao followed the sound. The crying grew clearer, and she realized it was the sound of a child weeping. Confused, she wondered whose child was still out here crying in the mountains at such a late hour.
Following the sound, she arrived at a dense bamboo grove. After searching around, she finally found the source of the crying under a large tree. It was a thin little boy squatting there, drenched from head to toe. Next to him lay a bamboo basket filled with fresh wild vegetables, though they were now dirty from the mud.
Upon closer inspection, she recognized him as Xiao Liang. "Xiao Liang, tell your sister why you're crying here," Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
"I went up the mountain to gather wild vegetables with Goudan and the others. They bullied me, so I started crying," the boy said.
Upon hearing this, Zhang Xiaoxiao noticed that Xiao Liang's arms and legs were covered in bruises.
"They hit you?" Zhang Xiaoxiao frowned.
"Yeah," the boy nodded and didn't say anything more.
"Come on, let's go down the mountain. I'll help you with your wounds," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Sister-in-law, I can't go back yet. My basket isn't full of wild vegetables," the boy replied.
"What do you need to gather more wild vegetables for? You're hurt like this," Zhang Xiaoxiao said with concern.
"But..." the boy hesitated.
"No buts. Listen to your sister and come down the mountain with me," Zhang Xiaoxiao insisted.
"Okay," the boy nodded and didn't say anything more.
"Then stop crying," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Okay," the boy responded and stopped crying.
"Let's go," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Okay," the boy replied, picked up his basket, and followed Zhang Xiaoxiao down the mountain.
"Sister-in-law, you're really nice," Xiao Liang said.
"Xiao Liang, you're very cute too," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
"Sister-in-law, you're flattering me," Xiao Liang said shyly.
Zhang Xiaoxiao held onto Xiao Liang as they walked unevenly when suddenly they heard familiar footsteps.
Zhang Xiaoxiao turned to see Zhao Guangcai coming towards them with a quiver on his back and a bow in his hand.
Seeing Zhang Xiaoxiao and Xiao Liang, Zhao Guangcai paused for a moment before quickly walking over.
"What are you doing up here?" Zhao Guangcai asked, his tone somewhat displeased.
"You still have the nerve to ask? It's almost dark, and you haven't come back yet. I was worried, so I came out to look for you," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
"I am a big man, what is there to worry about?" Zhao Guangcai said.
"Oh, big man, you are a big man, but what am I?" Zhang Xiaoxiao replied unhappily.
"You are my Wife," Zhao Guangcai said.
"Hmph, at least you know your place," Zhang Xiaoxiao said proudly.
"Who is this?" Zhao Guangcai asked as he looked at Xiao Liang.
"Oh, this is Xiao Liang. He was bullied while gathering wild vegetables on the mountain," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
