The two chatted while walking, and after half an hour, they finally arrived in town.
" Xiaoxiao, where should we go now?" Chen Shuying asked.
"Let's find a restaurant first," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
"Okay, I'll follow your lead," Chen Shuying said.
"How about this one?" Zhang Xiaoxiao pointed to a three-story restaurant.
"Sounds good," Chen Shuying responded and parked the ox cart at the entrance.
After securing the cart, the two walked into the restaurant. Since it was not mealtime yet, there were no customers inside.
"Welcome, ladies! What would you like to eat?" the owner’s wife greeted them warmly.
"We're here to place an order," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Place an order?" The owner’s wife was momentarily taken aback, clearly not understanding at first.
"Yes, we need to cater for a group of fellow villagers who are repairing houses, probably around twenty to thirty people," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
"So many?" The owner’s wife was shocked.
"Yes," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
"How many dishes do you need?" the owner’s wife asked.
"At least ten dishes, preferably five meat and five vegetarian," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
"This...," the owner’s wife hesitated.
"I know this request is a bit much, but we can pay an extra fee for urgency," Zhang Xiaoxiao added.
"An extra fee?" The owner’s wife's eyes lit up at this.
"Yes, we can pay a bit more as long as you can prepare everything on time and deliver it," Zhang Xiaoxiao clarified.
"What time do you need it delivered?" the owner’s wife inquired.
"Around five in the evening," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Alright, we'll figure something out," the owner’s wife agreed readily.
"How will the pricing work?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
"I'll need to check with the chef about that," the owner’s wife replied.
"Okay, please go ahead," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
The owner’s wife acknowledged and went into the kitchen. After a moment, she came back out with a piece of paper.
"Ladies, here is the menu; please take a look and see which dishes you need," the owner’s wife said.
"Okay." Zhang Xiaoxiao took the menu and started looking at it.
"Sister-in-law, can you see which dishes we need?" Zhang Xiaoxiao handed the menu to Chen Shuying.
"Xiaoxiao, why don't you order? I don't understand these," Chen Shuying said.
"Alright then," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied.
"Beef, pork belly, chicken, duck, and fish—let's go with these five meat dishes," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Okay, what about the vegetable dishes?" the owner asked.
"Eggplant, green beans, cucumber, carrot, and tomato—let's get these five," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Alright, that's a total of twelve dishes. With rice and delivery fees, it comes to three hundred sixty-five yuan," the owner said.
"So expensive?" Chen Shuying exclaimed.
"Sister-in-law, this price is quite reasonable," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"But..." Chen Shuying wanted to say more but was interrupted by Zhang Xiaoxiao.
"Sister-in-law, time is tight; let's not haggle," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Then... okay," Chen Shuying hesitated for a moment before finally nodding in agreement.
"Owner, we don't have that much money on us; we can only pay a part as a deposit and settle the rest after you deliver the dishes," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Sure, no problem," the owner replied readily.
"How much should we pay as a deposit?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked.
"Just twenty yuan for now," the owner said.
"Okay." Zhang Xiaoxiao responded and took out twenty yuan to hand to the owner.
"Young lady, you need to give me a written receipt," the owner said after taking the money.
"Sure," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded.
Upon hearing this, the owner immediately took out paper and pen to write it down.
After a moment, she handed the completed receipt to Zhang Xiaoxiao.
Zhang Xiaoxiao read it carefully and confirmed there were no issues before signing her name.
"Young lady, where is your address written?" the owner asked.
"We live in Zhao Family Village; someone will be waiting for you there," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Okay, I got it," the owner replied.
"Owner, we'll be leaving now," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Alright, take care," the owner said with a smile.
"Sister-in-law, let's go," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Okay." Chen Shuying replied and followed Zhang Xiaoxiao out of the restaurant.
After leaving the restaurant, they went to the market to buy some marinated dishes and ingredients before taking an ox cart back to the village.
By the time they returned to the village, it was already past three in the afternoon.
"Sister-in-law, I'm going to the mountain to pick some mushrooms. You can head back first," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Okay, just be careful," Chen Shuying replied.
"I know," Zhang Xiaoxiao responded and then set off up the mountain with her basket on her back.
An hour later, she returned to the yard with a basket full of mushrooms. At this time, several ox carts were parked in the yard, belonging to the fellow villagers who had come to help repair the house.
" Xiaoxiao, you finally made it back," a middle-aged woman greeted her.
"Aunt Liu, what brings you here?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked in surprise.
"I came with them," Aunt Liu replied.
"Oh, you must have been waiting for a long time," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Yes, we were almost starving," Aunt Liu complained.
"I'm so sorry! I went up the mountain to pick mushrooms and lost track of time," Zhang Xiaoxiao apologized.
"You really need to pay more attention, what if something dangerous happened?" Aunt Liu scolded.
"I won't do it again next time," Zhang Xiaoxiao promised.
"That's more like it," Aunt Liu said, her expression softening a bit.
"Please sit for a moment; I'll go get you some snacks," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Alright, hurry up," Aunt Liu urged.
Zhang Xiaoxiao acknowledged her and turned to go into the house.
A moment later, she came out with two bags of sunflower seeds and handed them to Aunt Liu and the others.
" Xiaoxiao, what are these?" Aunt Liu asked curiously.
"These are sunflower seeds; give them a try," Zhang Xiaoxiao said.
"Okay," Aunt Liu replied and then cracked one open and tasted it.
"Mmm, delicious," Aunt Liu praised.
"I'm glad you like them," Zhang Xiaoxiao smiled.
