When Rao Jie stepped out, Wu Rong was already waiting outside. The moment the door opened, their eyes met in an eerie silence, locking gazes for nearly three seconds before someone finally broke the tension.
"Looking pretty good!" Ye Ming exclaimed loudly, giving Wu Rong a nudge to step forward.
At that moment, Wu Rong was dressed in a meticulously tailored suit. With just a little tidying up, he looked strikingly handsome. He had several suits, but Rao Jie had never counted them while helping him organize. Each one was a high-end Italian design. This time, he opted for the simplest style: a black suit paired with a white shirt. The basic color scheme on him exuded an air of elegance and sophistication.
The suit was well-tailored, showcasing his tall and slender figure with broad shoulders and a narrow waist, presenting a refined and graceful appearance. Coupled with his handsome features—eyes like polished ink and brows like delicate brush strokes—he was even more attractive than many male celebrities known for their stunning looks.
As Rao Jie watched him, her heart began to race. If Wu Rong remained silent, he would simply be a beautiful man; anyone who appreciated beauty would be drawn to him at first sight.
Feeling a bit nervous, Rao Jie unconsciously clutched the hem of her dress and fidgeted. "Um... is this outfit okay?" she asked. Having never attended such a formal event before, she was unsure if she might appear inappropriate.
In truth, Rao Jie had dressed quite conservatively. The dress Wu Rong bought for her was elegant and modest, giving off a fresh and pleasant vibe without any complicated designs or embellishments. It reflected her usual style but was just a bit more formal and upscale.
She paired the dress with a small jacket and handbag, applied light makeup, and styled her hair up, shedding some of her youthful appearance without overdoing it—making it quite suitable for the dress.
"Looks great! Right, Wu Rong?" Ye Ming quickly poked Wu Rong from behind, hoping he would offer some timely praise.
However, Wu Rong seemed completely oblivious to the feelings of the young girl beside him and simply stated, "Ready? Let's go."
Ye Ming and Rao Jie exchanged glances of disbelief.
Before long, the three of them drove to the venue for the banquet. This event was organized under the name of Shencheng University, naturally showcasing grandeur. They arrived at the best hotel with the largest banquet hall. It was Rao Jie’s first time here.
Feeling somewhat anxious, she closely followed in Wu Rong's and Ye Ming's footsteps.
However, soon, Ye Ming parted ways with them, as he needed to stay on the first floor to greet the guests. Only Rao Jie and Wu Rong went upstairs.
Rao Jie followed Wu Rong closely, never walking side by side, which made it seem less like they were companions and more like she was an assistant. Many mathematicians who attended also brought their Graduate Assistants with them, so Rao Jie’s presence at the venue didn’t seem out of place.
The two entered the elevator, and as the doors closed, a silence filled with awkwardness enveloped them. Rao Jie suddenly realized that she hadn’t had a proper conversation with Wu Rong yet.
After a moment of thought, she looked up at Wu Rong, who was standing in front of her with his back turned, and mustered the courage to speak: “Professor Wu.”
Wu Rong paused for a moment and turned to look at Rao Jie. Her heart raced as she bit her lip, ready to say something more when suddenly the elevator dinged and opened.
Oh no, she hesitated too long; they had already reached the banquet floor. Just as she felt a bit disappointed, she heard a familiar voice.
“Welcome, Professor Wu.”
Rao Jie and Wu Rong both looked up to see Long Yong standing at the elevator entrance to greet them.
Long Yong first noticed Wu Rong and then saw Rao Jie, his face lighting up in surprise. “Rao Jie, what are you doing here?”
