"Ah, isn't this Zhang Xiaoxiao?" an Aunt approached, greeting her warmly.
"Hello, Aunt," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied politely.
"Weren't you going to the bookstore in town? Why are you back so soon?" the Aunt asked curiously.
"We took the ox cart back," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
"Oh, I see," the Aunt said, realizing.
"We're heading home now, goodbye," Zhang Xiaoxiao said courteously.
"Wait, Zhang Xiaoxiao, can I ask you something?" the Aunt called out to her.
"What is it?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked, puzzled.
"What were you doing at the bookstore? What use is reading for a girl?" the Aunt gossiped.
"Who says girls can't read?" Zhao Guangcai said coldly.
"I... I was just asking," the Aunt stammered.
"You don't need to ask so much," Zhao Guangcai mocked.
"I just find it strange; girls shouldn't be reading those kinds of books," the Aunt mumbled.
"This is my wife's hobby; what does it have to do with you?" Zhao Guangcai said unhappily.
"I..." the Aunt was at a loss for words.
"What about you? Just mind your own business," Zhao Guangcai said coldly.
"I... I'm sorry; I shouldn't have meddled," the Aunt admitted, lowering her head.
"Alright, you can go now," Zhao Guangcai said impatiently.
"Okay, I'm leaving now," the Aunt hurriedly replied.
"Wait," Zhang Xiaoxiao suddenly spoke up.
"Zhang Xiaoxiao, do you have something else to say?" the Aunt asked cautiously.
"Don't speak carelessly in the future," Zhang Xiaoxiao warned her.
"I... I understand," the Aunt said awkwardly.
"Let's go," Zhang Xiaoxiao said lightly.
The Aunt left dejectedly, feeling very upset inside.
"Wife, why did you just let her go?" Zhao Guangcai asked in confusion.
"If you're angry, I can help you teach her a lesson," Zhao Guangcai said seriously.
"No need; I'm too lazy to argue with her," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied indifferently.
"Really?" Zhao Guangcai asked doubtfully.
"Mm-hmm," Zhang Xiaoxiao nodded gently.
"But you didn't seem like someone who was too lazy to argue just now," Zhao Guangcai questioned skeptically.
"I just don't want to fight with you," Zhang Xiaoxiao confessed.
"Why?" Zhao Guangcai asked in surprise.
"Because I want you to go out without any worries," Zhang Xiaoxiao said softly.
"What do you mean?" Zhao Guangcai asked, confused.
"I don't want you to worry about me after you leave," Zhang Xiaoxiao explained.
"So that's why you're not holding it against her?" Zhao Guangcai said in surprise.
"Yeah," Zhang Xiaoxiao admitted.
"Silly girl," Zhao Guangcai said with concern.
"I just don't want you to worry too much about me," Zhang Xiaoxiao said quietly.
"I understand," Zhao Guangcai said, touched.
"Let's go home," Zhang Xiaoxiao said, linking her arm with Zhao Guangcai's.
"Okay," Zhao Guangcai replied affectionately.
The two of them walked home hand in hand.
---
"Wife, what do you want to eat?" Zhao Guangcai asked.
"You cook; I like whatever you make," Zhang Xiaoxiao said sweetly.
"Your words are so sweet," Zhao Guangcai teased.
"Not at all," Zhang Xiaoxiao said shyly.
"I'm going to cook; you wait here," Zhao Guangcai said.
"I want to help you," Zhang Xiaoxiao insisted eagerly.
"No need, I can do it alone," Zhao Guangcai refused.
"But I want to do it with you," Zhang Xiaoxiao pouted playfully.
"Be good; I can manage by myself," Zhao Guangcai coaxed.
"Alright then," Zhang Xiaoxiao compromised.
"You wait outside for me; I'll be done soon," Zhao Guangcai said gently.
"I understand," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied obediently.
Zhao Guangcai tied on an apron and walked into the kitchen.
Zhang Xiaoxiao squatted in the yard, picking out vegetables.
After selecting the vegetables, she brought them into the kitchen, ready to assist Zhao Guangcai.
"What are you doing in here?" Zhao Guangcai asked in surprise.
"I'm here to help you," Zhang Xiaoxiao said playfully.
"No need; I can do it alone," Zhao Guangcai insisted again.
"Why not?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked, puzzled.
"Because you'll distract me," Zhao Guangcai stated frankly.
"How could that be?" Zhang Xiaoxiao questioned skeptically.
"You'll make me want to look at you uncontrollably," Zhao Guangcai said affectionately.
"You're so annoying," Zhang Xiaoxiao teased back.
"Be good and wait for me outside," Zhao Guangcai coaxed.
"Alright then," Zhang Xiaoxiao replied helplessly.
"I'll be done soon," Zhao Guangcai promised.
"Okay," Zhang Xiaoxiao said obediently.
Zhang Xiaoxiao left the kitchen, and Zhao Guangcai began to seriously prepare lunch.
After about ten minutes, Zhao Guangcai brought the dishes to the table.
"Wife, it's time to eat," Zhao Guangcai called out.
"Coming!" Zhang Xiaoxiao replied happily.
The two sat down at the dining table and started their meal.
"Wife, eat more," Zhao Guangcai said as he placed a piece of meat into Zhang Xiaoxiao's bowl.
"Mm, you eat too," Zhang Xiaoxiao said as she served a piece of meat to Zhao Guangcai.
"Wife, you're so good," Zhao Guangcai said, touched.
"Silly, if I don't treat you well, who else will I treat well?" Zhang Xiaoxiao teased.
"I love you," Zhao Guangcai said affectionately.
"I love you too," Zhang Xiaoxiao responded.
"Let's eat," Zhao Guangcai said gently.
"Okay," Zhang Xiaoxiao said sweetly.
The two chatted while eating, creating a warm atmosphere.
After finishing their meal, Zhao Guangcai took on the task of washing the dishes while Zhang Xiaoxiao sat in the yard enjoying the cool breeze.
"Xiaoxiao!" Xiao Liang ran over and called out.
"Xiao Liang, what brings you here?" Zhang Xiaoxiao asked in surprise.
"My mom went to work at the factory, and I had nothing to do, so I came to find you to play," Xiao Liang said sweetly.
"Oh, I see now," Zhang Xiaoxiao said with realization.
