I was so angry that I went straight back to my room and locked the door. No matter how my grandfather called out, I ignored him. Seeing that I wouldn't help him get water, he got up and kept knocking on my door. It seemed like this old man thought he had lived long enough. Well, let's settle the scores from our past life!
I contacted my good friend, who was currently studying technology. I asked her to help me create an animation of Qin Zhili. After she finished according to my request, the next day it was my turn to take care of my grandfather again. Late at night, my grandfather started causing trouble again instead of sleeping. I pulled the power switch in the house.
When my grandfather saw that the lights in my room were off and that flipping the switch didn't work, he came out of his room to call for me. I hid in the shadows and used a projector to display the animation of Qin Zhili on the wall.
"Zhi Li? Zhi Li, is that you?" My grandfather exclaimed as he saw Qin Zhili appear on the wall, excitedly rushing forward, wanting to embrace her but unable to touch anything.
"Brother Yu, I am now a wandering soul; you can't touch me..." Qin Zhili said while crying.
"Brother Yu, I died unjustly; you must avenge me! Avenge me!" Upon hearing Qin Zhili's words, my grandfather hesitated and did not respond.
"Brother Yu, don't you want to avenge me for your child? He died unjustly! He didn't even have a chance to open his eyes and see this world before he died!"
Mentioning that unborn child moved my grandfather.
"Zhi Li, I will avenge you; tell me who harmed you!"
"It was your good granddaughter, Yu Shishi!"
After Qin Zhili finished speaking, I turned off the projector and pulled the power switch back on. With a loud "click," the whole house lit up again. Taking advantage of my grandfather's distraction, I sneaked back into my room and waited for him to come for revenge.
I tossed and turned in bed, too afraid to sleep. Two hours passed, and I began to doubt whether Grandpa knew this was a trick.
Suddenly, I heard a soft click. The sound of the doorknob being gently turned reached my ears. I lay in bed with the blanket over my head, holding my breath. I could hear Grandpa's footsteps. Although he tried hard to be quiet, his age made his steps quite noticeable.
I was still thinking about how Grandpa would take revenge for Qin Zhili when I suddenly felt something poke me in the back. I lifted the blanket, covering Grandpa's face, and moved aside. I saw that Grandpa was holding a fruit knife. Fortunately, I had prepared well; I was wearing three layers of thick cotton clothing, and with the heavy blanket on top, that fruit knife couldn't hurt me at all.
I opened the window and shouted outside, "Help! Help! There's been a murder!" It was late at night, and my shout echoed through the quiet neighborhood. All the neighbors heard me. Concerned neighbors called the police, and many gathered outside our house to see what was happening.
I had already spread the word about Grandpa and Qin Zhili's situation. Now that they heard me scream for help, the neighbors instinctively thought that Grandpa had lost his mind and was seeking revenge for Qin Zhili. The police arrived at the scene quickly.
The physical evidence at the scene was that fruit knife, which only had Grandpa's fingerprints on it. After all, I wasn't injured, and we are related as grandfather and granddaughter. The police thought about taking us back to the station for mediation.
As the police led us out of the house, neighbors lined the streets, pointing at Grandpa as he walked out.
"This old man really has no respect for his age. He was a decent person when he was young, but how did he become so confused in his old age, having an affair with that loose Nanny?"
"Yeah, it's pitiful for his children, who can't even hold their heads up because of him. Now he's willing to kill his own granddaughter for that Nanny!"
"I heard it's for revenge for the Nanny, who is pregnant with his child!"
The neighbors chattered excitedly among themselves. Grandpa heard them and his face turned red with anger. He stopped in his tracks and glared at me, suspecting that I was the one spreading these words. Just as he was about to scold me, his gaze passed through my head and looked behind me.
He froze, trembling uncontrollably. Before the police could react, Grandpa let out a scream, and they didn't have time to respond.
"I... Cai Xia, I was wrong!"
Grandpa then threw himself against the wall and died instantly. Cai Xia was my grandmother's name. She was a very strong-willed person, and Grandpa had been afraid of her all his life. I had my best friend synthesize an image of Grandma earlier and just had her project Grandma's image onto the wall not far away.
Grandpa had presbyopia, which allowed him to see far away.
So he saw Grandma and realized that it was his foolish actions that caused him to frighten himself to death by crashing into the wall.
The scene turned chaotic.
The police maintained order while calling for backup.
I signaled to my best friend in the crowd to leave first.
I stood beside Grandpa's body, waiting for my dad and the others to arrive.
"Shishi!"
I heard someone calling my name, the voice familiar and warm.
It seemed to be Grandma!
I looked up and saw Grandma's spirit floating in the air.
I widened my eyes, unable to believe what I was seeing.
My friends had all left; this was not an illusion!
"Grandma!"
I saw Grandma was very excited, reaching out as if to hold my hand, but I passed right through her spirit.
"Grandma can only save you once; you must walk your own path from now on!"
After saying this, Grandma disappeared before me.
It turned out that I could be reborn because of Grandma.
She was willing to endure the suffering of ten lifetimes in the animal realm to grant me this chance at rebirth.
I silently vowed in the direction where Grandma had vanished.
From now on, I would live well for myself and for Grandma!
