Chapter 3 Malice
On the day of the official class assignment, the entire morning was spent by the students packing their things and moving to their new classes. In the afternoon, formal classes were set to begin. He Rui had already calmly accepted his mother's arrangement, at least his mother's original intention was still to worry about him.
He Rui slowly climbed the stairs with his book in his arms. The science experiment class was on the top floor of the teaching building - the fifth floor, and the building didn't have an elevator. In the crowded hallway, He Rui carefully used his peripheral vision to navigate, holding the heavy stack of books that obstructed his view. His thin, pale fingers tightly gripped the books, and the veins on the back of his hand bulged from the weight. Some people noticed He Rui and made way for him, but most people rudely pushed past anyone blocking their path. He Rui struggled to maintain his balance and finally made it to the door of his new class. He saw a few tables against the wall and, feeling the soreness in his arms, he placed the books on the table and rubbed his shoulders and stretched his back. His school uniform accentuated He Rui's slender waist, and there were faint stares from the surroundings. He Rui furrowed his brows and looked back, but no one was there. Perhaps he was just being overly sensitive lately, he thought strangely.
Just as He Rui turned around to organize his books, a few people forcefully bumped into his shoulder.
"Sorry, slipped a bit on the floor. Hope you don't mind, classmate."
He Rui was hit and fell to the ground, his shoulder heavily scraped against the rough edge of the table, and his palm quickly rubbed against the rough ground, with sand sticking to the oozing blood on his palm. The pain was so intense that he almost lost his voice and couldn't recover for a while. The malicious few enjoyed his embarrassed posture.
"Neither man nor woman, where did you get the guts to take brother Xu's place in the science experiment class? Just because of that one extra point in the exam, who knows if you didn't hold your dog's urine and accidentally got an extra point." A series of unbelievably dirty insults were thrown at He Rui, who struggled to raise his head to look.
There were three people in total. The one who hit him should be the skinny monkey-like boy closest to him, and the one who cursed at him should also be this monkey, with spittle even landing on his face. The other two, one was extremely tall and muscular, bulging out the school uniform like a bear; the other person was too far away for him to see clearly, only able to make out a medium build.
"I... I don't even know you at all, why..." He Rui trembled, his voice was very low, and it disappeared without a trace when the wind blew.
"Do you need a reason to beat a dog?" skinny monkeys seemed to have been triggered by something, and started his one-sided insults towards He Rui.
From those difficult-to-hear dirty words, He Rui roughly guessed the reason they came to pick on him. He felt absurd and ridiculous. He didn't want to be in this class at all. He was forced to be here, and he knew he couldn't resist. Not to mention the difference in physique, three against one, and these three were obviously troublemakers that couldn't be provoked. He Rui could only remain silent, his face pale. After the three had finished their insults, they left triumphantly.
After the three people left, the crowd around quickly dispersed, leaving only two girls looking hesitant and unwilling to stay. After a moment, the two of them gritted their teeth and went forward to help He Rui up. "Let's take you to the infirmary, it's very close by, and it won't delay you from packing your books for the new class." "Thank you for your trouble," He Rui said softly, hanging her head.
In the infirmary, the faint bubbling sound of hydrogen peroxide disinfecting the wound could be heard. Two girls first introduced themselves to He Rui, then spoke about the misdeeds of a few people. The leader, Xu Mingyuan, came from a wealthy family but had a bad temper. The other two, Zhang San and Li Si, were followers of Xu Mingyuan, also from well-off families but not as wealthy as Xu Mingyuan. The Xu family had a deep political background and was not to be trifled with.
"You should just avoid them when you see them in the future, they are completely unreasonable," sighed one of the round-faced, round-eyed girls.
"Okay... thank you, you don't need to help me in the future, I'm afraid they might hurt you," said He Rui as he got up from the bed, straightened his clothes, and decided to return to the classroom. He walked slowly to the door, feeling the two girls staring at him. He turned around and mouthed a thank you to them. The two girls visibly teared up, wanting to cry but holding back.
He Rui quickly tidied up his seat in the new class. Strangely, the people in the class had not been interested in him before. After moving his seat to the table at the back of the classroom next to the window, the number of glances around him increased, some curious, some envious, some disdainful... He was a very sensitive person, and the meaning of these glances was too complicated. He couldn't understand, and there was no one familiar in this class to ask.
The afternoon classes proceeded as usual. He Rui occasionally looked up to listen and then lowered his head to take notes, spending the time without a desk mate.
At two o'clock, the student at the window table returned, and He Rui immediately understood why others had looked at him strangely before.
