In a fleeting moment between life and death, saliva poured down as if in a way that was hard for an ordinary person to comprehend, biting towards Li Nan's face in a terrifying manner.
With a loud "clang," the sound of a blunt object echoed, and Li Nan suddenly thought, "Could there still be variables?"
Just as Li Nan hesitated, he suddenly felt the force binding his hands and feet relax, and he couldn't help but exclaim inwardly, "Heaven has not forsaken me! It must be that Heaven has not forsaken me!"
Li Nan was overjoyed and abruptly opened his eyes, just in time to see a ferocious face looming beside him, causing his heart to skip a beat.
Although the Red-Eyed Man had relaxed the grip on Li Nan, his body remained still, maintaining a biting posture but had yet to strike.
With lips curled back and teeth bared, the upper and lower jaws formed a vertical angle, foul-smelling saliva dripped from his mouth, wetting Li Nan's face. At that moment, it was clear that the Red-Eyed Man was quite unsanitary and lacked any sense of decorum.
For Li Nan, who was about to meet his end at the hands of this creature, how ugly or vulgar the Red-Eyed Man appeared was beyond his comprehension. However, he felt a flicker of joy as he noticed something.
The earlier "clang" indeed came from a heavy object striking his head; evidently, despite the danger he faced, Li Nan had not been injured. Behind the Red-Eyed Man stood an old man with white hair, holding a nanzhu wood cane. Though it was only as thick as two fingers, the handle was shaped like a large dragon's head, hovering right above the Red-Eyed Man's head.
"Teaching you to bully others! Teaching you to bully..." The old man muttered incessantly, but his cane did not continue its descent. Clearly, he was a kind-hearted person. However, upon seeing the twisted face of the assailant, the old man's expression turned extremely grim.
The Red-Eyed Man's attention was drawn to the old man behind him; he immediately stood up and turned around as if suffering from anorexia, abandoning Li Nan.
In that instant, it seemed as if divine intervention had occurred for Li Nan. He straightened up and stood tall as if nothing had happened at all.
Having escaped from danger, he naturally wanted to make a run for it. However, just as Li Nan turned to flee, he saw the old man who had just helped him trembling uncontrollably, his nanzhu wood cane having fallen to the ground.
The sounds of "Phoenix Legend" echoed in the square while the nearby sidewalk was nearly deserted. At that moment of life and death urgency, no one else seemed to notice.
Gritting his teeth, Li Nan rushed towards the Red-Eyed Man and delivered a flying kick right to his waist. He didn't care whether this man was alive or dead; he understood well that striking at the vital points was essential.
"Sir! Hurry and run!" Li Nan shouted repeatedly before launching a second kick aimed at the man's groin.
The old man had completely lost his earlier bravado with the cane; only when he heard Li Nan's shouts did he slowly regain some awareness and began to move clumsily.
The old man's body was unsteady; being an elderly person who needed a cane meant his legs were not agile. Given how critical the situation was, he moved even more slowly.
As the Red-Eyed Man turned around and spotted Li Nan, he let out an angry cackle and attempted to pounce on this man who had kicked him twice.
After breaking free from the Old Man's grasp, Li Nan felt a slight sense of relief. To be honest, the two kicks he had just executed were quite fluid; he didn't even know how he managed to pull them off. It was probably a manifestation of human potential. However, just as Li Nan was about to deliver a third kick, he realized that this potential had vanished.
His lower back and hips were particularly vulnerable and could not be easily injured; otherwise, he would likely lose the happiness of his later years. Fortunately, the Red-Eyed Man had not inflicted any harm on him apart from the physical strain.
Li Nan did not dwell on the Red-Eyed Man for too long. When he missed his third kick, he inwardly cursed, "This guy is completely unfazed by my attacks; it seems exhausting me won't do any good!"
In the square, a group of middle-aged women danced wildly, completely oblivious to what was happening nearby. Most pedestrians kept their distance from the women, and the music was blaring loudly, accompanied by unpleasant shouts.
The Red-Eyed Man, enraged by Li Nan's actions, charged at him with the intent to tear him apart.
Since Li Nan couldn't defeat the Red-Eyed Man, he had no choice but to run away. However, he couldn't head towards the Old Man's direction or into the crowded square, so he sprinted towards the sidewalk instead.
As fate would have it, there had been no one on the sidewalk moments ago, but as Li Nan reached it, a massive crowd suddenly surged forth.
Seeing someone being chased down the street—especially by someone so menacing—caused panic among the citizens. Shouts erupted: "Someone's being attacked!" "It's a riot!" "Catch the thief!"
"Shut up and call the police! Hurry up and report it!" Li Nan yelled desperately as he noticed people around him.
The Red-Eyed Man plunged into the crowd and suddenly found himself surrounded by many targets, unable to distinguish between Li Nan and the Old Man from earlier. In a frenzy, he grabbed a little girl with drool dripping from his mouth.
"Li Er, my Li Er~" a mother cried out in despair amidst the crowd, completely ignoring those rushing past her.
The little girl in the Red-Eyed Man's grasp was clearly terrified; although she did not struggle, she trembled uncontrollably.
Li Nan was exhausted. After catching his breath for a moment, he noticed that the Red-Eyed Man had found another target—a seven or eight-year-old girl—who was now in grave danger.
As a doctor accustomed to life and death and familiar with human emotions, one would expect Li Nan to be somewhat cold-hearted. However, that wasn't the case for him. Perhaps it was because he hadn't been in such a harsh medical environment for too long. When he saw that a young girl was about to lose her life before even blooming like a flower bud, he couldn't bear it and hesitated.
"Forget it! If I can save her, I will!" Li Nan thought as he pushed against the flow of people and closed in on the Red-Eyed Man from about ten meters away. He took off his jacket, rolled it into a ball, and threw it at the Red-Eyed Man.
As Li Nan raised his hand to throw, he paused for a moment. His gaze fell upon a person lying on their back behind the Red-Eyed Man. The body trembled a few times before going stiff like iron—it had become a corpse. The remains were unrecognizable, reduced to some indistinct bloodied flesh as if it had been devoured.
Li Nan's heart sank in horror as he recognized that the lifeless body on the ground was none other than the Old Man who had bravely intervened earlier. One moment he had been holding a cane; in the next moment, he had transformed into a cold corpse. Even after twenty years of Socialist education, Li Nan felt an overwhelming surge of rage—he could hardly contain himself!
"Malagobi!" Li Nan shouted, and then, in a fit of anger, he threw the clothes in his hand away.
The Red-Eyed Man was hit and seemed to be angry, but clearly, he was unwilling to give up the delicate food in his hands, so he did not bother with Li Nan's provocation.
Seeing this, Li Nan felt very aggressive and looked around, only to find that there were no weapons or advantages nearby. In unarmed combat, he was clearly no match for the Red-Eyed Man!
Was he going to back down just because he couldn't win? That wasn't the character of a northern man. Li Nan bared his upper body and shouted again, seemingly wanting to showcase his flying kick technique once more. However, as he glanced around, he noticed a woman in her thirties not far away, holding a Fire Axe and seemingly ready to fight the Red-Eyed Man.
It was evident that the woman was the mother of the little girl. A mother would do anything to save her child!
Li Nan suddenly gathered his strength, feigning a stumble as if he were struggling. However, he did not hesitate and turned back to run towards the young mother.
When the woman saw a man rushing towards her, her heart tightened. But soon after, she realized that this man must be trying to save her daughter because the Fire Axe in her hand had already been snatched away.
"Damn you! You piece of trash! I don't know where you crawled out from, but how dare you act tough here? Do you think no one can deal with you? Damn you and your whole family!" Li Nan shouted as he took the Fire Axe from the mother's hands. With the weapon in hand, he felt emboldened and thought to himself: "Even if you're a fierce tiger today, you'll still be chopped down by me, Second Brother!"
Holding the Fire Axe, Li Nan charged at the Red-Eyed Man and swung it downwards.
Since the little girl was still in the opponent's grasp, Li Nan was cautious and aimed for the Red-Eyed Man's thigh instead.
The Red-Eyed Man sensed someone attacking him and instinctively raised his left arm to block it, but it ended up right under the axe blade. Seeing this, Li Nan lifted the axe and severed one of his arms at the shoulder.
The Red-Eyed Man did not seem to feel pain or bleed; instead, he turned to look at Li Nan with a face soaked in human blood.
The little girl in his arms suddenly lost support and fell to the ground, tears streaming down her face as she trembled violently.
Li Nan held the Fire Axe with rage boiling inside him; he had murderous intent. However, he knew that what stood before him could not be called a human—it was a devil, a demon that poisoned humanity!
Li Nan raised the Fire Axe and channeled his strength to strike down.
Suddenly, police sirens blared as dozens of armed officers jumped out of their cars and approached the street.
"Raise your hands! You are surrounded..." one officer shouted through a megaphone.
Li Nan noticed the police approaching and quickly withdrew, dropping the Fire Axe to indicate that he meant no harm. In this situation, there were many uncertainties about the police firing their weapons, so Li Nan took the initiative to signal for his own safety.
The Red-Eyed Man did not care about the police; he immediately reached out to grab Li Nan, intending to satisfy his own desires first. However, the surrounding police officers saw a Corpse and realized the situation was critical. One officer fired a shot, hitting the Red-Eyed Man in the chest.
The Red-Eyed Man was unharmed and continued his violent behavior, followed by a second shot and then a third.
Driven by instinct to seek advantage and avoid danger, even though the Red-Eyed Man was shot and unscathed, he retracted his hands from Li Nan and turned to flee.
"Do not fire for now; ensure the safety of that little girl and the young man!"
"Yes, Captain!" one officer responded, relaying the message via radio to all colleagues.
The person referred to as Captain furrowed his brow, already assessing the nature of this case. "Is it a malicious brawl resulting in murder? Or are there Northern Frontier riotous elements involved?"
The Captain faced a dilemma; that red-eyed man showed no fear of gunshot wounds or the police. It seemed this was going to be a major case, and as a small precinct's Captain, he felt increasingly unable to control the situation. It was necessary to seek assistance from higher authorities.
As the involved party, Li Nan, looked at the little girl who had fallen to the ground, an overwhelming sense of helplessness washed over him, causing him to collapse.
A group of police officers chased after the Red-Eyed Man, and soon an ambulance arrived to assist Li Nan and the little girl into the vehicle.
One of the accompanying medical personnel briefly examined Li Nan's injuries and said, "The patient has a head injury; it appears to be from an external force. There are signs of a concussion; we need to get him to the hospital quickly!" After checking, the medical personnel noticed Li Nan's appearance and involuntarily muttered, "How is it him?"
