Li Nan was invited into the police car, and one of the officers bluntly asked, "Li Nan, do you recognize this person?"
A photo was thrust in front of Li Nan. After pondering for a moment, he replied, "Isn't this the person who committed the crime last night? Although he has been shot in the head, I still recognize that green polyester short-sleeve shirt he was wearing!"
The officer chuckled, "Since you've recognized him, then just be honest with us!"
This statement left Li Nan confused, like a monk unable to grasp the situation: "What should I confess? I'm not a suspect; there's nothing to confess!"
The space in the police van was quite large. Li Nan sat in the back compartment against the wall, with one officer beside him, another behind him, and one more sitting by the rear door.
For a moment, the atmosphere inside the police van felt strange. Before the officer who had questioned Li Nan could speak again, the officer behind him said, "We suspect you have intricate connections to the serious incident that occurred tonight at Beiyuan Square, so please be honest!"
Li Nan's mouth dropped open in disbelief: "I don't know that person; I just bumped into him by chance near Beiyuan Square. After that, he went wild, grabbing and biting anyone he could find. What does that have to do with me? If it weren't for my quick reflexes, I would probably be lying in the morgue right now. You tell me how this is related to me; I'm also a victim here!"
The officer behind Li Nan leaned forward and continued to question him: "You bumped into him and he went crazy; who would believe that?"
At this moment, the officer sitting next to Li Nan said, "Xiao Wang, you should be quiet!"
"Yes! Captain!" The officer referred to as Xiao Wang immediately shrank back like a deflated balloon.
"I am Captain Han Guang from Jiangbei Police Station."
Seeing that Han Guang extended his right hand, seemingly having dispelled any previous hostility, Li Nan felt it inappropriate to refuse and shook hands with Han Guang.
This Captain from Jiangbei District Police Station appeared to be around forty years old, with dark skin and a determined gaze; he looked like a capable person.
Li Nan defended himself: "It was purely a coincidence that I bumped into that person. I'm an intern doctor at Jiangbei City First Hospital; you can verify all of this!"
Han Guang smiled and said, "I already know about that. I've seen the surveillance footage near Beiyuan Square; it seems you have no issues. However..."
Usually, the boss praises you first, then suddenly brings up a "but," which typically means you're about to be fired; the same goes for a girlfriend—when the conversation shifts, it often leads to a breakup. Therefore, Han Guang's words seemed to carry deeper meaning to Li Nan.
Han Guang noticed a change in Li Nan's expression, but it wasn't the kind of guilty look that suggested he had something to hide; rather, it resembled a fear of the unknown. At this point, Han Guang had already begun to believe Li Nan's words.
Han Guang slowed his speech and continued, "However, this case is quite tricky. It is unprecedented in Jiangbei City. Although the murderer has been killed, the impact is severely negative. Various rumors have emerged regarding the Beiyuan Square case, and as Mr. Li Nan is directly involved, his voice carries more weight. I hope Mr. Li will refrain from overthinking and not simply follow what others say."
Common people are most concerned with everyday matters and enjoy gossiping. Li Nan understood the deeper meaning behind Han Guang's words and replied, "All I know is that I almost died tonight; that's not something to boast about!"
Han Guang smiled, "Alright, you can get out of the car now. Tomorrow morning, please go to the Beiyuan precinct to give a statement. Once that's done, you will have no further connection to this matter!"
The car door opened, and Li Nan left, heading straight back to the hospital.
Inside the van, someone asked Han Guang, "Boss, this case tonight is unusual; it's already involved the military. It's better for us not to get entangled in it!"
Han Guang's expression tightened as he replied, "Do you think I would seek trouble for myself? I'm just a bit worried; Jiangbei City may never see peace again!"
The person beside him didn't understand and merely muttered, "Even if the sky falls, it won't crush us!"
Han Guang's police car was parked near Jiangbei Hospital, so as soon as Li Nan got out, he hurried inside and saw Nurse Gao Xue again.
Earlier, Han Guang and his team had said they were taking Li Nan for questioning about the evening's incident. Gao Xue couldn't stop them but was surprised to see Li Nan back so soon: "Didn't they say they were taking you back to the police station for a statement? How did it end so quickly?"
Li Nan chuckled, "Look at the time; it's already past ten at night. They must have gone home to sleep long ago—there's no time left for them to deal with someone like me. So I came back!"
Seeing Li Nan return made Gao Xue happy, but she still grumbled, "If they didn't have time for your statement, why bother coming to disturb you?"
Li Nan was puzzled about why Han Guang had come looking for him that night. If it was just to prevent him from spreading rumors, there was no need for such a fuss! Unable to understand Han Guang's intentions and unwilling to dwell on such mentally exhausting matters any longer, he said to Gao Xue, "Please find me a bed; I’ll stay as a patient tonight!"
Gao Xue laughed, "I see you don't have any issues at all, yet you're pretending to be sick here!"
Li Nan shrugged it off, "Who says I'm not sick? Can't you see I've scraped a patch of skin off the back of my head? If I don't mention it, I'm fine, but once I do, I feel dizzy!"
Gao Xue was startled by Li Nan's feigned fainting and immediately supported him, saying, "You need to get a CT scan for your head. If you're always feeling dizzy, it can't just be a mild concussion!"
Li Nan's trick had worked, and he chuckled. Gao Xue realized she had been fooled and immediately raised her fist to lightly punch him, pretending to be angry.
Li Nan enjoyed this feeling and couldn't help but laugh louder. Gao Xue pouted, "I'll go find you a bed. It's not a good sign for a doctor to sleep in the hospital; let's just let you sleep it off here!"
Just as Gao Xue was leaving, a woman hurriedly walked into the hospital and asked the front desk for Li Nan's room number. Unfortunately, Li Nan's injuries were minor and did not require hospitalization at all. Gao Xue had merely taken advantage of her position to provide some convenience for the man she liked, which wouldn't appear in the front desk records.
The woman inquired around until she finally spotted Li Nan standing in the Emergency Department corridor.
"Hello, my name is Mo Xiaohui. Are you Li Nan, who was injured near Beiyuan Square tonight?"
Li Nan nodded woodenly in affirmation. Mo Xiaohui relaxed slightly and wiped the fine sweat from her forehead before saying, "Finding you wasn't easy. Do you have some time now? I'd like to ask you about what happened tonight at Beiyuan Square."
Mo Xiaohui looked Li Nan up and down; it seemed that Wang Bo's information was not very accurate. This man appeared to be completely uninjured. If it weren't for the two butterflies tied to each of his hands, Mo Xiaohui would have every reason to believe that Li Nan was perfectly fine.
Li Nan remained still and expressionless, momentarily stunned by Mo Xiaohui's presence. "Is Mr. Li not available right now?" she asked.
After hesitating for a few seconds, Li Nan finally came to his senses and firmly replied, "Not at all! I'm very available!"
Faced with Mo Xiaohui from Jiangbei Television Station, Li Nan's previously lively demeanor suddenly dulled. Fortunately, he didn't act too out of character and managed not to raise any suspicions.
Seeing a stretcher beside Li Nan, Mo Xiaohui said, "Mr. Li, do you need to lie down? I want to ask you a few questions about the details of what happened tonight at Beiyuan Square. It might take some time. If you're injured, lying down while we talk is perfectly fine. Actually, I'm from Jiangbei Television Station..."
Li Nan suddenly smiled and said, "I know you; you are the host of Neighborhood News. I watch that show, and I quite like you... and your program."
Mo Xiaohui smiled in response and said, "Since you know me and my program, that makes things easier." Originally, Mo Xiaohui had planned to take out her press card from the television station. After all, everyone tends to be cautious when approached by a stranger. The most important thing was that she had rushed out of the station and seemed to have forgotten her press card.
Before becoming a host at Jiangbei Radio, Mo Xiaohui worked as a reporter covering news stories, and she had never completely abandoned those skills. So she quickly took out a voice recorder from her bag and said to Li Nan, "I need to record what we discuss next; I hope you don't mind!"
Li Nan lay on the stretcher against the wall, perfectly positioned to see Mo Xiaohui's waist. Tonight, she was wearing a formal short skirt that only reached her knees. However, from Li Nan's angle on the stretcher, he couldn't help but glance up at her slender, fair legs, but unfortunately, the beautiful view was obscured by the skirt.
"I don't mind at all! Not at all!" Li Nan said insincerely.
Mo Xiaohui leaned slightly forward, resting her head as she stood beside Li Nan's stretcher and asked, "Mr. Li, were you near Beiyuan Square around six o'clock this evening?"
Li Nan nodded, then his gaze fell on Mo Xiaohui's chest and lingered there.
Mo Xiaohui seemed to notice Li Nan's gaze but didn't think much of it; she merely assumed there was something inappropriate about her appearance. She slightly adjusted her hair and reminded him, "Mr. Li~"
Li Nan suddenly snapped back to reality and secretly chastised himself for being so lewd. He deliberately shifted his gaze away and said earnestly, "I witnessed the incident that occurred at Beiyuan Square tonight. Feel free to ask me anything!"
Upon hearing this, Mo Xiaohui became interested: "Then please describe in detail what happened during the Beiyuan Square Incident tonight!"
As a young man who had received over twenty years of education in Socialism and cultivated values, Li Nan felt deeply guilty about his vulgar interests. However, facing a beautiful and refined goddess like Mo Xiaohui, how could he possibly hold back?
