He held her tightly in his embrace, preventing her from getting up. His gaze fell on the scar by her cheek, darkening instantly. "Why haven't you treated these scars?"
Qi Chao lowered her head humbly. "I forgot that you dislike seeing this, and it displeases you. I beg for your forgiveness, Your Majesty."
"They are not ugly; it’s just that seeing them makes me feel guilty."
He was the one who had hurt her, using despicable means to possess her. "Chao Xi, I want to make you my consort, so we can be together every day from now on."
Qi Chao was taken aback.
Had she made a mistake? After all, Qin Hao was Du Yuetang's husband, and she loved Feng Chengqian, though that love had become a joke by now.
Qin Hao wouldn’t allow Qi Chao to return to the Butterfly Pavilion, but she was insistent. Du Yuetang was waiting there for her, so she dismissed those around her and leisurely sipped tea in the garden.
Qi Chao felt restless and after much contemplation decided to inform Du Yuetang: "He has returned."
Du Yuetang's expression remained unchanged. "Chao Xi, everything is already set in motion. Even if he comes back, we cannot change anything, can we?"
She could not change her status as a consort or the fact that Bo'er was the dragon's son; besides, she didn't want to change it anymore. Du Yuetang smiled faintly and said, "By the way, last night, Consort Li died of heart disease."
Qi Chao's expression froze. Du Yuetang continued, "Chao Xi, I know you love Feng Chengqian. You should leave with him..."
Qi Chao found herself at a loss for words; it was already too late.
There was no way she could leave with Feng Chengqian this time; Qin Hao would not let her go.
Until the eve of the coronation ceremony, Qi Chao had not seen Du Yuetang again; it seemed that Du Yuetang was intentionally avoiding her.
On the night before the ceremony, Qi Chao wandered through the garden and arrived at the pear orchard. Winter had just passed, and everything was poised for renewal.
In the darkness, a figure approached. "Chao Xi."
The voice was clear yet tinged with melancholy as he stepped closer to scrutinize her; time had not left its mark on her face.
He grasped her hand tightly. "I want to take you away."
"Feng Chengqian, you..."
"Don't tell me you're really going to marry Qin Hao, becoming just one of his many women!"
Feng Chengqian's agitation was palpable. He had returned to the capital to pay his respects but learned that she was to be conferred as a consort, and he nearly lost his mind.
"Will following you mean I can have you all to myself?" Chao Xi asked loudly.
Feng Chengqian was momentarily speechless. She couldn't help but smile bitterly. "Three years ago, I wanted to leave with you, but I missed that chance. Now, three years later, I have no choice left. Feng Chengqian, it's impossible for us."
Feng Chengqian stared at her blankly, unwilling to let go. "Chao Xi, all I know is that if I don't take you away this time, I will regret it for the rest of my life."
He had already regretted once three years ago; he would not allow himself to continue regretting now.
“Feng Chengqian, I once loved you…”
But she no longer wanted to love.
“Feng Chengqian, let her go!” Qin Hao suddenly appeared, a large group of guards following closely behind, surrounding the two of them.
Qin Hao's gaze fell on their intertwined hands, and then he looked at Qi Chao Xi with a pained expression. “You still can’t let him go, can you?”
“Your Majesty, I…”
Jealousy clouded Qin Hao's thoughts as he ordered, “Take Qi Chao Xi back to Chaohui Palace. Without my permission, do not allow her to leave!”
Feng Chengqian was prohibited from entering the harem. Although Qin Hao did not punish him due to his contributions in diplomatic relations, he remained restless, constantly thinking about Qi Chao Xi.
But the person in her heart was no longer him, or perhaps she had never truly loved him.
An arrow struck the pillar, a note tied to it. Feng Chengqian read it and was filled with rage: “Qi Chao Xi has not changed her heart. She was once violated by Qin Hao; the scars on her face are proof.”
So she would change her heart; her unwillingness to leave with him was all because of this!
Feng Chengqian felt both anger and pity. How he wished he could hold her tightly, offering her warmth and comfort. He immediately contacted old friends and allies; for Qi Chao Xi, he was willing to risk everything.
