The Morning Radiance Palace was as quiet as a cold palace.
Qi Chao Xi sat quietly, and Qin Hao cautiously said, “Feng Chengqian defied the decree and sent that princess back.”
Her eyes flickered slightly. Qin Hao forced a smile, yet he refused to let go. “I will not let you leave, absolutely not.”
“He once told me about your relationship.”
Qi Chao Xi looked up at him. “You want an excuse to kill him, to eliminate your threat, right? So you arranged for him to be in the palace to make it easier, but why haven’t you killed him this time?”
Qin Hao was taken aback; he hadn’t expected Feng Chengqian to tell her these things.
Qi Chao Xi continued, “You don’t really like me. You only want me because I’m someone Feng Chengqian desires, isn’t that true?”
He didn’t answer but countered with a question, “Chao Xi, do you hate me?”
Qi Chao Xi fell silent.
“Do you know that what you’ve done to me is enough for me to kill you a thousand times? If I could do it all over again, I would definitely warn myself to stay away from you. But Qi Chao Xi, now I can’t let go.”
It was simply because he had held on for too long—long enough for her to become a part of his life, long enough that even knowing it would bring him pain, he still wouldn’t release his grip.
After Qin Hao finished speaking, he fell into a long silence and sighed without sound. Just as he was about to leave, Qi Chao Xi tugged at his sleeve and asked, “Can’t you not kill him?”
“Feng Chengqian is plotting rebellion.”
When that time comes, he would be powerless.
Qi Chao's body went rigid.
Qin Hao smiled sadly; perhaps it would be him who died.
Would she be heartbroken then?
In the deep of night, a strange turn of events unfolded in the palace. Several skilled fighters evaded the patrolling guards and entered the Chaohui Hall.
Qi Chao was jolted awake from her dream, drenched in cold sweat. "Who’s there?"
"Chaoxi." It was Feng Chengqian. "Whether you hate me or not, I must take you away."
"This is a trap!" Qi Chao panicked. "They want to kill you!"
As soon as she spoke, archers had surrounded the Chaohui Hall, a line of bright arrows aimed at them. Qin Hao looked heartbroken. "Qi Chao, you have betrayed me once again!"
"I didn't..." The bitterness at the corner of Qin Hao's mouth made her feel a pang in her heart.
Yet, Qin Hao refused to look at her again. He turned his head and ordered, "Arrest Feng Chengqian and his men and throw them into the dungeons to await their fate!"
Several masked men, unwilling to be captured, fought back fiercely. A few darts suddenly shot towards Qin Hao. Qi Chao broke free from Feng Chengqian and lunged to shield Qin Hao.
Qin Hao roared, "Chaoxi!"
Qi Chao fell into Qin Hao's embrace, gripping his hand tightly as she shook her head desperately. "Don't kill him... please don't kill him..."
Feng Chengqian was Bo'er’s father, and he was also her brother. She couldn't bear to see them turn against each other.
"Your Majesty, please..."
"Morning and Evening..."
Qin Hao held Qi Chao close, her voice growing weaker. He promised, "If you die, I will ensure Feng Chengqian is buried with you!"
The imperial physician had never seen Qin Hao so frantic, and he immediately grew anxious, trembling as he spoke, "Miss... the child may not be saved..."
Qin Hao was stunned; the child, their child!
"Save her... you must save her! I don't want the child!"
He didn't want to lose her, nor could he bear the thought of it. His hands trembled as he saw the tears on Qi Chao's face, and with a pained heart, he wiped them away. "We will have children; we will definitely have them..."
As long as she was willing to stay.
Qi Chao shook her head in agony. "This is my retribution..."
She remembered the late Consort Li. The miscarriage had been caused by the musk she had given her, and Consort Li's death was due to the night-blooming jasmine she sent that had triggered her heart condition... She had taken away someone else's child; now she had to pay for it.
