The helicopter crashed, surrounded by endless primeval forest. Qi Lan heard the distressed voice of the popular star Yu Mengmeng: "I want to go home! I want my manager!"
She casually tore off a piece of roasted chicken; it tasted really good.
"Stop crying, or the wolves will come," Qi Lan kindly reminded her.
Yu Mengmeng looked at her as if she were crazy. After all, in their eyes, she was just an unskilled, eighteen-line little star who would only drag them down in the wilderness survival challenge.
Only Qi Lan knew that ten years ago, she had been brought back to civilization by a research team looking for wild people in this very forest.
And now, she was back, equipped with survival skills and...
"Awoo—"
The deafening howl of a wolf echoed in her ears. Qi Lan looked up and saw a massive White Wolf King staring at her with deep eyes, its mouth holding...
A rabbit.
...A rabbit?
Qi Lan froze for a moment before recognizing it as the White Wolf King she had raised since childhood, her eyes instantly filled with surprise. How did it end up here?
"Ah—wolf! A wolf!" Before she could speak, Yu Mengmeng had already screamed and hidden behind Lu Chen, while Fu Nian's face turned pale as he frantically picked up a branch from the ground, taking a defensive stance.
Lu Chen remained calm, his sharp gaze sweeping back and forth between the White Wolf King and her, seemingly sensing something as his brows furrowed slightly.
Qi Lan stood up, ignoring the terrified looks from the others, and walked straight to the White Wolf King. It lowered its head submissively, allowing her to take the rabbit from its mouth; it was fluffy and still warm.
"Thank you, Little White," Qi Lan said, patting the White Wolf King's head and speaking softly in a language only they could understand. "How did you get here? Did you come to bring me food?"
The White Wolf King let out a low whine, nudging her palm with its head before turning and disappearing into the dense jungle.
Qi Lan turned around to see that everyone else was still in shock, clearly unable to process what had just happened. Especially Yu Mengmeng, whose gaze towards her was filled with disbelief and... a hint of barely noticeable jealousy?
"You... you can actually talk to wolves?" Fu Nian was the first to react, stuttering slightly as he spoke.
Qi Lan shrugged and pretended to be casual. "Is it strange to know a bit of animal language when I grew up in the mountains?"
"Mountain area... didn't you say your family lives in the countryside?" Yu Mengmeng peered out from behind Lu Chen, her tone sharp.
"Isn't the countryside just in the mountains?" Qi Lan replied, feigning confusion while secretly amused; it seemed her acting skills were quite good.
Lu Chen had been silently observing me, his deep gaze seemingly able to see through everything. Qi Lan felt a bit uncomfortable under his scrutiny, diverting her eyes and preparing to handle the rabbit.
"Wait," Lu Chen suddenly spoke up, "Can you understand all animal speech?"
Qi Lan paused her actions, turned to look at him, and deliberately put on an innocent expression: "Of course not, I'm not an animal expert. I can only understand some common animals' speech, like wolves, rabbits, snakes, and so on."
After saying that, she winked at them playfully, flashing a cheeky smile.
====================
Qi Lan deliberately emphasized the word "snake," glancing at Yu Mengmeng out of the corner of her eye. Yumeng's expression changed slightly but quickly returned to normal.
"Alright, enough of that. Let's hurry and roast the rabbit; I'm starving," Qi Lan pretended not to notice her odd reaction and lowered her head to start preparing the rabbit.
"Qi Lan, you're really impressive; you can actually communicate with animals," Lu Chen said as he walked over to me, his tone carrying a hint of subtle admiration.
Qi Lan looked up at him and smiled modestly: "It's nothing; just some little tricks that are useful for survival in the wild."
"Yeah, unlike some people who can only scream and complain," Fu Nian remarked sarcastically, his gaze intentionally drifting toward Yu Mengmeng.
Yumeng's face turned pale as she bit her lip but dared not retort. She knew Fu Nian was making veiled insults but didn't want to offend him; she could only vent her frustration on me.
"Qi Lan, can you take me nearby to have a look? Maybe we can find a signal," she suddenly approached Qi Lan, pretending to be affectionate as she linked her arm with hers, her voice sweetly flirtatious.
Qi Lan calmly withdrew her hand and said, "I've searched this area, and there’s no signal. Besides, the forest is very dangerous; you’d better not wander around."
"Come on, just take me there, please," she insisted, shaking Qi Lan's arm. Her tone was playful but carried an undeniable firmness.
Qi Lan frowned, about to refuse, when Lu Chen suddenly spoke up: "Qi Lan is right; the forest is dangerous. It's safer for you to stay here."
Yu Mengmeng shot a reluctant glance at Lu Chen but didn’t dare to defy him, so she sulkily sat down nearby.
Taking the opportunity, Qi Lan walked over to the campfire and began roasting a rabbit. The rabbit sizzled as it cooked, releasing a tempting aroma.
"Wow, it smells amazing!" Fu Nian was the first to approach, his eyes fixed on the roasted rabbit.
Qi Lan pretended not to notice his eager gaze and leisurely turned the rabbit, ensuring each side was golden and crispy.
"Qi Lan, your rabbit roasting skills are impressive; it's better than anything I've had before," Lu Chen praised from the side.
Qi Lan smiled without replying and simply handed him the roasted rabbit.
Lu Chen took the rabbit but didn’t eat it immediately; instead, he tore off a piece and offered it to her: "You should have some too."
Qi Lan paused for a moment before smiling and accepting it: "Thank you."
Watching the interaction between Qi Lan and Lu Chen, Yu Mengmeng's expression darkened, and a cold smile crept onto her lips.
"Oh no!" she suddenly exclaimed, pointing behind me. "What’s that?"
Qi Lan instinctively turned to look but found nothing behind her. When she turned back again, Yu Mengmeng had vanished without a trace.
"Oh no!" Qi Lan's heart sank as she realized what had happened. She must have deliberately distracted her and sneaked into the forest.
Qi Lan immediately got up and chased after the direction Yu Mengmeng had left.
"Qi Lan, where are you going?" Lu Chen asked from behind me.
"I'm going to find Yu Mengmeng; she might be in danger!" Qi Lan shouted without looking back, quickening her pace.
In the forest, Yu Mengmeng was eagerly searching for a signal. As she walked, she was scanning the area with her phone, completely unaware of the danger beneath her feet.
"Hiss..."
A green venomous snake emerged from the grass, flicking its tongue, its cold vertical pupils fixed intently on Yu Mengmeng.
"Ah!!!"
Yu Mengmeng screamed in fright, dropping her phone to the ground. She turned to run but accidentally stepped on a loose stone, losing her balance and falling heavily to the ground.
Seeing this, the snake lunged at her immediately.
"Help! Help!" Yu Mengmeng cried out in despair, but no one could hear her pleas.
Just as the snake was about to strike, a white figure suddenly descended from above, blocking her path.
