Tu Shen took the document and began to flip through it. The file detailed Chen Shuhua's analysis of several recent serial murder cases, as well as his speculations about the killer's methods.
The more he read, the more alarmed he became. He never expected Chen Shuhua to analyze the case so thoroughly, even more professionally than himself, a detective.
"Chen Shuhua, who exactly are you?" Tu Shen put down the file and fixed his gaze on Chen Shuhua, his tone filled with curiosity.
Chen Shuhua did not answer his question. Instead, he walked to the window and gazed at the distant sky, speaking in a deep tone, "I am an ordinary person who has lost a loved one and only wants to seek justice for her."
Tu Shen fell silent; he understood what Chen Shuhua was referring to.
He had heard about Chen Shuhua's wife—a very complicated missing persons case that remained unsolved to this day.
He empathized with Chen Shuhua's feelings and understood his desire to be involved in the operation.
"I can let you participate, but you must promise me that you will follow orders during the operation and not act on your own. Do you understand?" Tu Shen said seriously.
"I understand," Chen Shuhua nodded. He knew that Tu Shen was concerned for his safety and the smooth progress of the operation.
"Good, then let's head out now," Tu Shen said as he turned and walked out of the office.
Chen Shuhua grabbed his coat and quickly followed him. He was ready to confront those ruthless criminals. He wanted to seek justice for his wife, and even if it cost him his life, he would have no regrets.
Chen Shuhua hurriedly kept pace with Tu Shen as they walked out of the office and through the corridor of the police station.
The walls on both sides of the corridor were covered with various case clues, photos, and maps, with red marks prominently indicating each crime scene. A tense atmosphere filled the air.
"This operation is very dangerous. Are you sure you want to come with us?" Tu Shen asked quietly as he walked ahead, a hint of concern in his tone.
"I have made up my mind," Chen Shuhua replied firmly, without a trace of hesitation. He gently touched the ring finger of his left hand, where his wedding ring should have been.
"Alright, but you must promise me to follow orders during the operation and not act on your own," Tu Shen emphasized again. He knew Chen Shuhua was skilled, but he was more worried that Chen Shuhua might make a wrong judgment out of impulse.
"I understand," Chen Shuhua nodded in acknowledgment.
The two arrived at the police station parking lot, where a black SUV was parked in the corner, its engine running and headlights flashing, ready to depart at any moment.
Several fully armed police officers stood by the vehicle. Upon seeing Tu Shen and Chen Shuhua approach, they nodded in greeting.
"Chen Shuhua, let me introduce you. These are all elites from our criminal investigation team, and they will be in charge of this operation," Tu Shen said, pointing to a burly officer among them. "This is Jack, our team's deputy leader and the on-site commander for this operation."
"Hello, Jack," Chen Shuhua extended his hand to shake Jack's.
"Dr. Chen Shuhua, it's an honor to meet you," Jack said with a slight smile, though there was a glint of caution in his eyes.
"Alright, time is tight. Let's get in the car and discuss further," Tu Shen said as he opened the door and gestured for Chen Shuhua to enter.
Chen Shuhua bent down and got into the vehicle, followed closely by Tu Shen. The other officers boarded several other cars. The convoy slowly pulled out of the police station and sped towards their target location.
As Chen Shuhua sat in the car, he gazed at the rapidly retreating street scenery outside the window, memories of his wife's voice and smile flashing through his mind.
He clenched his fists, silently vowing to bring those murderers to justice and avenge his wife.
"Dr. Chen Shuhua, you seem very tense," Jack said calmly, observing Chen Shuhua through the rearview mirror from the passenger seat.
"I'm fine," Chen Shuhua replied, taking a deep breath and trying to calm himself.
"I know you're worried about your wife's safety, but please trust us. We will do everything we can to find her," Jack reassured him, though he knew deep down that it had been a long time since Chen Shuhua's wife went missing, and the hope of finding her was very slim.
"Thank you," Chen Shuhua said softly. He understood Jack's good intentions but did not hold much hope. He knew that even if they found his wife, it would not change the fact that she was already gone.
The convoy drove for about an hour, arriving at the outskirts of an abandoned factory. The area was overgrown with weeds, the walls were peeling and crumbling, and the windows were in disrepair, exuding a chilling atmosphere.
"Is this the place?" Chen Shuhua asked quietly.
"Yes, according to our intelligence, the Organ Trafficking Gang's hideout is in this factory," Jack nodded seriously.
"We have surrounded the entire factory; they won't be able to escape," Tu Shen added as he opened his walkie-talkie. "All teams, be alert and prepare to move."
At Tu Shen's command, the police quickly got out of their vehicles, spreading out to approach the factory stealthily.
Chen Shuhua entered the factory with Tu Shen and Jack. Inside, it was pitch dark, and the air was filled with a nauseating smell of chemical agents.
"Be careful; there may be traps here," Jack whispered as a warning.
