The corridor's lights were pale and cold, stretching the shadows of the two men into elongated forms. Chen Shuhua silently followed Tu Shen, his eyes vacant and lifeless, as if he had become a hollow shell devoid of a soul.
Tu Shen brought Chen Shuhua back to his home and settled him in the guest room to rest. Chen Shuhua lay on the bed but could not fall asleep. His mind replayed memories of his wife, Chen Lily, and the haunting image of dissecting her on the Autopsy Table.
" Chen Lily, what should I do? What am I supposed to do?" Chen Shuhua murmured in anguish, gripping his hair tightly.
He could not forgive himself, nor could he face a life without his wife.
Chen Shuhua began to drink heavily, trying to numb his nerves with alcohol and escape the harshness of reality. He locked himself in his room every day, drinking without rest, as if that would help him forget all the pain.
Tu Shen watched helplessly, anxious for his friend. He knew Chen Shuhua was on the brink of collapse but felt powerless to help. All he could do was bring meals to Chen Shuhua daily and urge him to drink less, only to be met with harsh refusals.
"Get away! Leave me alone!" Chen Shuhua shouted as he smashed the bottle in his hand onto the floor, glass shards flying everywhere.
Tu Shen sighed in resignation and quietly cleaned up the mess. He understood that what Chen Shuhua needed now was not advice but an outlet for his emotions.
Days passed, and Chen Shuhua remained trapped in the shadow of losing his wife. He became increasingly despondent and disheartened.
One night, Chen Shuhua went alone to a bar in town, seeking to numb himself with alcohol. He sat at the bar and ordered one glass of whiskey after another, pouring them down his throat.
"Sir, you've had too much to drink. Should I..." The bartender noticed Chen Shuhua's disheveled state and kindly attempted to intervene.
"Get lost! Don't bother me!" Chen Shuhua interrupted rudely, his gaze unfocused and filled with pain and despair.
At that moment, a woman in a black lace dress sat down next to Chen Shuhua. She had fiery red curly hair and wore bright lipstick, exuding an air of mature allure.
"Drinking alone? You seem to be in a bad mood," the woman said, lifting her glass and taking a light sip, her gaze intentionally or unintentionally sweeping across Chen Shuhua's face.
Chen Shuhua ignored her, continuing to drink alone.
Seeing this, the woman was not offended and continued, "I'm Lily. What about you?"
Chen Shuhua still did not respond, as if the woman did not exist.
"I heard you're the best forensic expert in this town. Is that true?" Lily did not give up and continued to seek a topic of conversation.
"Forensic expert?" Chen Shuhua scoffed as if he had heard a ridiculous joke. "What does it matter? I couldn't even protect my own wife!"
A flicker of barely noticeable light flashed in Lily's eyes at Chen Shuhua's words. She asked nonchalantly, "What happened to your wife?"
"She died," Chen Shuhua replied flatly, as if discussing something unrelated to himself.
"She died? How did she die?" Lily pressed on, curiosity evident in her tone.
"She was..." Chen Shuhua began but suddenly stopped. He looked up, his gaze sharp as he stared at Lily. "Why are you asking so many questions?"
Lily was startled by Chen Shuhua's intense gaze but quickly regained her composure. She raised her hands in a gesture of innocence and said, "I'm just curious, don't misunderstand. Rest assured, I'm not interested in what happened to your wife."
Chen Shuhua coldly glanced at Lily, said nothing more, and continued to drink his alcohol in silence.
Seeing that Chen Shuhua was no longer paying attention to her, Lily wisely closed her mouth, but her gaze never left Chen Shuhua, as if she were plotting something.
"However..." Lily suddenly lowered her voice and spoke mysteriously, "I have heard some things about your wife; perhaps you would be interested to know."
Chen Shuhua abruptly raised his head, his eyes fixed intently on Lily as he asked, "What do you know?"
Lily's lips curled slightly upward, revealing a meaningful smile.
