The three of them realized that the situation was man-made and decided to investigate secretly in the city. They quietly left Charity Manor, concealing themselves in the darkness. Walking through the streets of Qingyang City, the cold night wind sent chills down their spines. Li Ye, Zhiruo, and Yan Yuchen navigated through the alleys, only hearing the howling wind, which made the atmosphere particularly silent.
At that moment, a piercing scream echoed from nearby. Li Ye quickly gestured for the others to approach the source of the sound silently.
They saw a member of the Bat Gang being attacked by a terrifying specter. The specter appeared as a translucent shadow, its body twisted and grotesque, with eyes glowing a fierce red. Its long, thin arms ended in sharp claws that mercilessly pierced into the Bat Gang member's body.
"It's a Soul Devourer!" Yan Yuchen whispered, shock written all over her face.
Specter acted decisively, appearing before the Soul Devourer like a ghost, its sharp claws slashing towards it. The Soul Devourer let out a chilling scream, releasing the Bat Gang member and turning to pounce on Specter.
Specter and Soul Devourer quickly engaged in combat, claws flying and cold winds swirling around them. The Soul Devourer's speed was astonishing, its form flickering unpredictably, causing Specter to miss several attacks.
At this moment, Shadow Reaper joined the battle. Armed with a longsword, her swift and fierce swordplay complemented Specter's moves perfectly. The light of her sword struck like lightning at the Soul Devourer, forcing it back. Specter seized the opportunity to attack from the side, claws aiming fiercely at the Soul Devourer's chest.
The Soul Devourer roared in anger, its body suddenly transforming into a cloud of black mist as it retreated rapidly. Specter and Shadow Reaper refused to relent and pursued relentlessly. Their coordination became increasingly seamless, balancing offense and defense as they pushed the Soul Devourer back step by step.
However, the Soul Devourer was incredibly powerful; with its bizarre movements and formidable dark energy, it managed to withstand their attacks. It let out an angry shriek before turning into black mist and vanishing into the night.
Specter and Shadow Reaper halted their attacks, cautiously scanning their surroundings to ensure that the Soul Devourer would not strike again. Li Ye stepped forward and looked at them with concern: "Are you both alright?"
Specter and Shadow Reaper nodded slightly, indicating they were unharmed.
Zhiruo anxiously looked at the Bat Gang member who had been attacked; his body was already cold, clearly beyond hope of survival. Zhiruo turned to Li Ye: "Brother Ye, didn't you say this was man-made? How could a 'Soul Devourer' really appear?!"
Li Ye frowned and said: "This Soul Devourer was likely summoned by someone. Look at the wounds on this Bat Gang member; they are different from those inflicted by weapons found on the corpses. It's very likely that this Soul Devourer incident is unrelated to those sacrificed bodies!"
Yan Yuchen nodded while looking at the corpse: "I think you're right, Li Ye. I never expected there would be so much trouble in Qingyang City!"
Zhiruo looked at Li Ye and Yan Yuchen and said, "So what should we do next?"
Before Li Ye could respond, a group of Bat Gang members appeared and surrounded them. The leader glared fiercely at Li Ye and his companions, saying, "How dare you kill my brother!"
Li Ye frowned slightly and quickly scanned the surroundings. These Bat Gang members were clearly not to be trifled with; the burly man at the front had a face full of scars and held a gleaming large knife, looking quite menacing.
Li Ye said in a deep voice, "We did not kill your man; it was the Soul Devourer that attacked him."
"Stop talking nonsense!" The burly man clearly didn't believe him and shouted angrily, "Brothers, let's chop these guys up and avenge Ali!"
The Bat Gang members surged forward, and Li Ye calmly instructed, "Yan Yuchen, Zhiruo, be careful and protect yourselves."
Li Ye turned to Specter and Shadow Reaper and ordered, "Specter, Shadow Reaper, just knock them out; don't harm them."
Specter and Shadow Reaper quickly sprang into action, knocking out the approaching Bat Gang members one by one. Their movements were swift and precise, wasting no effort; the Bat Gang members fell one after another but were not seriously injured.
Seeing this, the burly man roared in anger and swung his knife at Li Ye. Li Ye snorted coldly, raised his hand to block, and swiftly counterattacked, forcing the burly man back several steps. Unwilling to back down, the burly man lunged again with his knife. Li Ye's eyes turned cold as he seized the opportunity to strike the burly man's chest with a palm, sending him flying to the ground where he landed heavily and spat out a mouthful of blood.
Li Ye stared coldly at him and said in a deep voice, "We really did not kill Ali."
Gasping for breath, the burly man looked up at Li Ye. Having witnessed their strength, he finally understood that what Li Ye said was true. He struggled to stand up and awkwardly apologized, "Sorry, I misunderstood you."
Li Ye nodded and signaled for Specter and Shadow Reaper to protect Yan Yuchen and Zhiruo. Then he said to the burly man, "I am Li Ye; this is Zhiruo and Yan Yuchen. Can you tell me what exactly happened?"
The burly man rubbed his chest and coughed a few times before introducing himself: "I am Wang Meng, Vice Leader of the Bat Gang. Our gang is a local force in Qingyang City, making a living by collecting protection fees. Recently, there have been frequent deaths in the city; the victims all died in tragic circumstances, but the Yamen has taken no action."
"So you decided to take matters into your own hands?" Li Ye asked.
Wang Meng nodded, "Yes, since we collect protection fees, we must ensure the safety of this area. It's a matter of honor in the underworld. So I sent my men to patrol every night, usually in groups of three. Unfortunately, Ali went to the restroom alone and lost his life. When I arrived and saw you all, I naturally misunderstood and thought you killed Ali."
Li Ye frowned, pondering for a moment before saying, "There may be a larger conspiracy behind these deaths. We are currently investigating this matter."
Yan Yuchen interjected, "All the deceased have strange talisman marks on them. We suspect this is part of some evil sacrificial ritual."
Wang Meng's expression changed slightly upon hearing this, and he nodded gravely, "If that's the case, we indeed need to cooperate. If the Yamen does nothing, we must save ourselves."
Li Ye nodded, "Alright, let's investigate together. We must find the mastermind behind the Soul Devourer in this city."
The group reached a consensus and decided to collaborate on investigating these terrifying death incidents. They moved the Bat Gang's members aside to ensure their safety, and then Li Ye led Zhiruo and Yan Yuchen to follow Wang Meng back to the Bat Gang's base to discuss strategies further.
At the Bat Gang's base, Wang Meng showed them several records detailing the times and locations of recent death incidents. Li Ye examined these records closely and noticed that there seemed to be a pattern to these events.
"It looks like we need to check the scene," Li Ye said.
"Exactly," Wang Meng agreed with a nod. "We will do our utmost to assist you."
As night fell, Li Ye, Yan Yuchen, and Zhiruo followed Wang Meng to the location where the most recent death incident occurred. They carefully observed from the shadows, hoping to find more clues.
