The townsfolk watched the scene with fear, some hiding inside their homes while others couldn't help but peek out from their windows to watch. In no time, the windows on both sides of the street were crowded with people whispering among themselves.
The black-clad men's moves were fierce, each strike a deadly attack. They wielded sharp swords, and flashes of blades crisscrossed in the air. One black-clad man executed a "Swift Wind Slash," sending a whirlwind toward Lan Xi; another used "Earth Shattering Palm," striking towards Lan Xi's chest with tremendous force. Lan Xi barely managed to dodge, but her clothes were torn, revealing a glimpse of her fair skin, causing hearts to race.
Seeing Lan Xi in such a vulnerable state stirred something in Li Ye's heart; it reminded him of that day when she had asked him for a hug. At that moment, he felt a complex mix of emotions—some embarrassment but more so concern and pity.
"Brother Ye, should we save her?" Zhiruo asked despite having some reservations about Lan Xi; seeing her in such distress made it hard for her not to inquire.
Li Ye nodded. "Regardless of everything, she has traveled with us before; we can't just stand by and watch her die."
Yan Yuchen added, "That's right; we can't just let her perish."
With that, the three quickly rushed into the fray to help Lan Xi fend off the black-clad attackers. Li Ye's sword moved like wind and thunder, driving back several assailants. Zhiruo's palm strikes were elusive yet effective, protecting Lan Xi's flank. Yan Yuchen drew his sword and attacked with strikes as fluid as flowing clouds, forcing the black-clad men to retreat step by step.
The assassins sent by Wei Chenghao realized they could not succeed against Li Ye and his companions and chose to withdraw immediately. The black-clad men quickly vanished into the alleys, leaving behind chaos in their wake.
Lan Xi looked at Li Ye breathlessly and gratefully said, "Thank you for saving me once again."
Li Ye smiled lightly and said, "It's nothing, just a small effort. But how come you are being chased again?"
Lan Xi sighed and pretended to be sad as she replied, "These people are under Wei Chenghao. I originally wanted to help you find his whereabouts to repay you for your treatment, but he discovered my movements and sent someone to hunt me down. I had nowhere to go and was hiding everywhere, only to unexpectedly run into you here."
Li Ye patted Lan Xi's shoulder and said gently, "In that case, you can temporarily join us. However, I hope you understand that we have our own goals and principles, and I hope you can abide by them as well."
