She was wearing a light yellow dress, and her jet-black hair fell casually over her shoulders. From behind, she looked somewhat... cute?
“Xiao Tang?”
Lin Fan tentatively called out.
Hearing his voice, she suddenly turned around, holding a bottle of ketchup in her hand.
“Y-You... hello...”
When Xiao Tang saw Lin Fan, a naive smile appeared on her face, completely devoid of the fierceness and terror associated with zombies in movies.
Lin Fan was momentarily stunned, his initial fear dissipating somewhat.
She looked like a little sprite who had accidentally wandered into the human world, her eyes filled with curiosity and confusion. The bottle of ketchup in her hand seemed particularly comical.
He looked at her and couldn't help but laugh.
Xiao Tang tilted her head, looking at him with a puzzled expression.
“It’s nothing, I just...” Lin Fan chuckled and shook his head as he walked closer. “That’s not how you use ketchup.”
He took the ketchup from her hand and put it back in the refrigerator.
Xiao Tang watched Lin Fan's actions intently, her eyes filled with a thirst for knowledge.
“Do you want to learn?” Lin Fan asked, picking up a bag of fries.
Xiao Tang nodded vigorously, her eyes sparkling with excitement, like a child anticipating a gift.
Lin Fan took out some ketchup, squeezed a bit next to the fries, and then handed the fries to her.
"This way you can dip them."
Xiao Tang carefully picked up a fry, dipped it in the ketchup, and then put it in her mouth, savoring it.
A satisfied smile spread across her face, her eyes squinting as if she had tasted the most delicious food in the world.
Lin Fan watched her, filled with confusion.
Is this really the uncontrollable Zombie that the former caretaker spoke of?
The former caretaker's phone call suddenly flashed in Lin Fan's mind:
"Kid, I advise you to be careful; that thing is not something you can control..."
The expression and tone he had back then were filled with fear and unease.
"What are you thinking about?"
Xiao Tang's voice interrupted Lin Fan's thoughts.
He came back to reality and found Xiao Tang looking at him curiously.
"Nothing, I was just..." Lin Fan smiled evasively, "thinking that you probably have a lot more to learn, right? Like how to use a phone, how to go online..."
His gaze fell on the tablet placed on the table, which was specially prepared by the director for Xiao Tang, hoping it would help her better understand the human world.
"How about I teach you how to use this?" Lin Fan picked up the tablet and pointed at the icons on the screen. "This is a game; you can play..."
Xiao Tang's attention was immediately drawn to the tablet. She reached out with her pale fingers and gently touched the screen.
He patiently taught her how to open the game and how to control the game character.
Xiao Tang learned quickly, mastering the basic controls in no time.
She was fully engaged in playing, sometimes furrowing her brows and other times smiling, as if she had completely immersed herself in the world of the game.
Perhaps... taking care of Xiao Tang wasn't as daunting as he had imagined?
Lin Fan picked up his phone and captured a photo of Xiao Tang while she was playing.
In the picture, she wore an innocent and cheerful smile, showing no trace of a Zombie at all.
"Ding dong."
The doorbell suddenly rang, interrupting Lin Fan's thoughts.
He got up to open the door, where a staff member from the agency delivered Xiao Tang's daily supplies.
"Hello, here is your package. Please sign for it," the staff member handed him a cardboard box.
"Thank you," Lin Fan said as he signed for it and took the box.
After the staff member left, he closed the door and returned to the living room with the box.
Xiao Tang had stopped playing and was curiously looking at the cardboard box in Lin Fan's hands.
"What is this?" she asked.
"Your things," Lin Fan replied as he opened the box.
The cardboard box contained some clothes, shoes, daily necessities, as well as some toys and snacks.
Xiao Tang's eyes lit up instantly as she excitedly pulled out a red dress from the box and held it up against herself.
"Does it look good?" she asked him.
"It looks great," Lin Fan replied with a smile and a nod.
Xiao Tang happily put on the new dress and twirled in front of the mirror like a child who had just received a beloved toy.
Perhaps he could try to take care of her, to protect her.
As night fell, Lin Fan prepared dinner for Xiao Tang.
Xiao Tang enjoyed her meal, and after finishing, she offered to help him clean up the dishes.
"I'll help you," she said.
"No need, you should rest early," Lin Fan replied.
Xiao Tang shook her head, insisting on helping him.
Lin Fan couldn't refuse her and let her assist.
After they finished cleaning up the dishes, he took Xiao Tang back to her room.
"Good night, Xiao Tang," Lin Fan said.
"Good night," Xiao Tang responded with a sweet smile.
Lin Fan closed the door and returned to his own room.
Lying in bed, he just couldn't fall asleep.
Xiao Tang's unusual behavior throughout the day filled Lin Fan with confusion.
Was she really just an ordinary Zombie?
Why was she so curious about the human world?
Why did she display behaviors and emotions that were completely different from other Zombies?
His mind was filled with questions, yet he couldn't find any answers.
At that moment, Lin Fan's phone suddenly rang.
He picked up the phone and saw it was a call from his former caretaker.
"Hello?" he answered.
"Kid, I warned you about that thing..."
Before he could finish his sentence, there was a busy tone on the other end of the line.
Lin Fan's heart sank, a sense of foreboding rising within him.
