The class bell finally rang just as I was about to suffocate. The overweight math teacher, with his ten-month-old beer belly, swayed onto the podium. His almost negligible small eyes glanced at me from behind thick glasses, and I felt as if I had been pricked by a needle. What kind of look was that? Was I some monster rescued from the jungle? Why was he looking at me like that? 0

That fat pig! 0

As you might expect, my school life was far from pleasant. 0

Others looked up to Xu Wenmo with admiration, reverence, and caution, while for me... well, let's put it this way: Xu Wenmo was an elegant and kind young lady who cared for the weak and poor, while I was the rescued refugee. A small number of people looked at me with sympathy, but most attacked me with jealousy and disdainful words. Even though Xu Wenmo kept her distance from others, I was easygoing and cheerful, always trying to get along with people. 0

My experience had become a legend in the school; everyone, whether they knew me or not, knew that I was once a withered grass in Shantytown, but thanks to Xu Wenmo's golden touch, I had risen above others. 0

I hated this differential treatment even more than I hated Xu Wenmo for giving me all of it. 0

Yet some oblivious male classmates slipped paper-thin love letters into my desk and attached a note outside the elaborately crafted envelope: "Lin Ye, please help me deliver this letter to Xu Wenmo. Thank you so much!!!" 0

That would have been fine, but why did he have to meddle? 0

That afternoon after school, students rushed out of the classroom like wild animals. Some ran out of the school gate to enjoy their rare free time, while others dashed toward the cafeteria to grab food. Meanwhile, Xu Wenmo and I sat side by side in the classroom, taking out the lunchboxes prepared by the nanny that morning. Oh right, I forgot to mention that ever since Xu Wenmo returned home to live there, Mr. Xu had hired a nanny specifically to take care of her daily needs. 0

We quietly opened our lunchboxes without saying a word; the exquisite food became tasteless after being bitten into. 0

I really wanted to go out to eat, but Xu Wenmo was my "benefactor." How could I dare leave her alone? 0

"I'm sorry," Xu Wenmo suddenly said as she paused her chopsticks. "I'm not good at communication and don't like crowded places. If you're uncomfortable, you can go out with other classmates to eat." 0

One thing I had to acknowledge was that Xu Wenmo was very sensitive to people's emotional responses; sometimes you didn't even need to speak for her to know what you were thinking. That must be a characteristic of silent people. 0

"It's fine," I smiled nonchalantly. 0

She looked at me uncertainly and then glanced at the door before raising her chin and saying, "Is someone looking for you?" 0

I turned around and saw Xiao Shan, whom I hadn't seen in days. He used to often sneak into school during lunch breaks to play. 0

Seeing me look at him, Xiao Shan waved at me. I put down my chopsticks and sought Xu Wenmo's approval with my eyes. She smiled lightly and said, "Go ahead; it's your freedom." 0

I was very happy about Xiao Shan's arrival; after all, having faced so much coldness at school, he was my boyfriend—like a ship finally arriving at a harbor warmed by candlelight. 0

With anticipation in my heart, I walked out of the classroom. 0

"What brings you here?" We found a spot where Xu Wenmo couldn't see us; I leaned against the railing and asked him softly. 0

Xiao Shan still looked as handsome and charming as ever; he gazed at me gently and said, "I just heard you returned to school; congratulations!" 0

"Yeah." 0

"Have you found your mother?" 0
I slowly shook my head. "Where can I look? I can only wait for her to find me." 0
Xiao Shan hesitated for a moment and patted my shoulder. "Don't worry, she will definitely change her mind." 0
I don't want that! To abandon my current life and return to the original chaotic state, facing a heartless and cruel mother while waiting for my brutal and rude father to be released from prison? Am I a fool to reminisce about such days? 0
"Yeah, I hope she comes to find me soon." 0
"If you have any difficulties, feel free to reach out to me. After all, we are still friends." 0
Friends?! I was taken aback. When did we regress to the level of being just friends? 0
Xiao Shan, oblivious and unaware, continued, "Um, can you do me a favor right now?" He showed a nervous and shy expression that I had never seen before, carefully taking out a palm-sized box from his inner pocket. The box was adorned with a beautiful bow, and he held it with both hands as if he were offering me his heart. "Could you... help me pass this gift to Xu Wenmo?" 0
Bang! My heart shattered like a rock falling into an abyss. 0
I stared at him, long and hard, until he finally reacted and anxiously asked, "Lin Ye, what's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that?" 0
"Go die!" I slammed the gift box onto the ground. It crashed open with a dull sound of shattering glass, and then a light green liquid oozed out from the seams of the box, gradually spreading across the floor. 0
Xiao Shan stood there as if struck by lightning for quite some time. He sluggishly shifted his gaze from the soaked paper box to my face. "You're sick!" he yelled at me. 0
"I am sick! Don't ever come looking for me again!" 0
I left him behind and turned back to the classroom. 0
Xu Wenmo sat at her desk like a dazed person, looking at me in surprise with her mouth slightly open as if she wanted to say something but couldn't. 0
I strode up to her, fluidly throwing the porcelain lunchbox onto the ground. Shards mixed with leftover food scattered across her shoes. 0
Then, without waiting for her to speak, I shot her a hateful glare and quickly walked out of the third row. In my peripheral vision, her shocked and flustered expression sent me soaring with satisfaction. 0
Of course, I would have to bear the consequences of my impulsiveness myself. 0
After school in the afternoon, Xu Wenmo, who wasn't attending evening study sessions, packed her bag leisurely amidst the noise. I sat in my seat, repeatedly urging myself to endure. After struggling for quite a while, I finally slung my backpack over my shoulder and stood in the aisle outside the third row. "Xiao Mo—" 0
She looked up at me; her dark eyes revealed no emotion. 0
"I'm waiting for you outside." After saying that, I turned and walked into the corridor. Xu Wenmo soon came out; she hesitated as she looked at me. "You..." 0
"I was wrong at noon," I apologized first. " Xiao Shan broke up with me; I don't even know why..." 0
"Break up?" 0

I placed my hand on her shoulder and sensed her slight resistance. After a moment of struggle, she regained her composure, so I pretended not to notice anything and wrapped my arm around her shoulder as we walked downstairs. "Don't start with that talk about how early relationships are bad." 0

She shook her head lightly, clearly very nervous, her steps a bit unsteady. "I mean, I'm not angry; I'm actually afraid that you might be dissatisfied with me." 0

"Huh?" 0

"We're friends, right?" She tried to sound casual. "Aren't we supposed to be each other's sounding boards? If I can't even serve that purpose, then I probably don't deserve to be your friend." 0
