That night, Shouya lay in bed tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep until around three or four in the morning.
He was awakened by the sound of a ringing phone around seven or eight o'clock. When he picked up his phone, he saw it was a call from An Xin Ya's home. His sleepy eyes suddenly widened, and he quickly sat up, answering the call with a soft "Hello."
"Brother Shouya, I miss Grandma. I want to go to the hospital to see her, but I don't know how to get there!" An Xin Ya's lovely voice came through the phone, anxious and flustered.
"Xinya, just wait at home for me. Don't go wandering around. I'll drive over to pick you up right away," Shouya said as he got out of bed, talking on the phone while getting dressed.
"Okay, I understand," An Xin Ya replied obediently. "I'll wait for you to come."
After hanging up, Shouya finished getting dressed and hurriedly walked into the bathroom. After washing up, he rushed downstairs to the garage, quickly got into the driver's seat, started the car, and sped off toward An Xin Ya's place.
Since it was rush hour in the morning, there were many people and cars on the road, and he had to stop at every red light. Impatiently, Brother Shouya pounded on the steering wheel and cursed under his breath, "Fuck!"
An Xin Ya had already woken up. Last night, without her grandmother at home, she felt both lonely and scared. Every little sound outside made her jumpy.
She groped her way to the telephone and reached for the buttons. Relying on her memory, she dialed Shouya's phone number one digit at a time. Picking up the receiver, she held it to her ear, waiting for Brother Shouya to answer.
When she heard Brother Shouya's voice on the line, she felt an immense joy in her heart, worried that she might have dialed the wrong number.
An Xin Ya patiently sat at home waiting for Brother Shouya to come and take her to see Grandma in the hospital. She was concerned about her grandmother and wondered how she was doing now.
As each minute passed without any sign of Brother Shouya, her anxiety grew stronger.
Knock knock...
At that moment, the doorbell rang, and An Xin Ya was overjoyed, a smile spreading across her face as she groped her way to open the door. The person in front of her felt familiar and strong; she quickly grabbed Shouya's hand and exclaimed, "Brother Shouya!"
Standing at the door, Shouya was panting after running up the stairs to the second floor.
"I'm sorry I'm late!" Shouya said apologetically as he looked at An Xin Ya. He had been delayed due to heavy traffic on the way. Seeing her fair, slender hands tightly gripping his and the joy radiating from her beaming face touched his heart.
"It's okay!" As long as Brother Shouya was here, she felt immensely happy. She then added, "So can we go to the hospital now? I want to see Grandma. I couldn't sleep well last night because I kept thinking about her!"
Her tone was filled with urgent anticipation.
Noticing that her complexion wasn't great, Shouya felt a pang of concern for her; he didn't want to see her like this.
He hadn't slept well either, as thoughts of her occupied his mind throughout the night.
"Alright! I'll take you to the hospital right now," Shouya said as he gently placed his hand on her frail shoulder, closed the door behind them, and asked if she needed to grab anything else. She shook her head to indicate she didn't. Then he carefully helped her down the stairs.
As they were getting into the car, an aunt approached them; it was Aunt Li, whom they had encountered in the hallway last time. Aunt Li noticed a handsome young man helping An Xin Ya into the car and curiously walked over, smiling as she asked, "Xinya, where are you off to?"
"Aunt Li, Grandma is sick, and I'm going to visit her at the hospital!" An Xin Ya recognized Aunt Li's voice immediately and replied with a smile.
Aunt Li finally recognized who the handsome young man was; he was An Xin Ya's friend.
"Is Grandma okay?!" Aunt Li asked with a furrowed brow, concerned. Grandma An had always been in good health; why was she sick now? Aging made people less capable, Aunt Li thought to herself. She then glanced at the luxurious car in front of her, her eyes lighting up; she hadn't expected An Xin Ya's friend to be so wealthy!
"She's fine, thank you for your concern, Aunt Li!" An Xin Ya replied lightly.
Shouya reminded her from the side, and An Xin Ya said to Aunt Li, "Aunt, I'm leaving now. Goodbye!"
"Okay, go ahead. When you get to the hospital, send my regards to your grandmother and wish her a speedy recovery!"
"Sure."
Shouya helped her into the passenger seat and closed the door. He walked around the front of the car, opened the driver's door, and sat down. Noticing she wasn't wearing her seatbelt, he leaned over to help her fasten it.
He heard An Xin Ya softly say in his ear, "Thank you, Brother Shouya!"
"You're welcome!" After fastening her seatbelt, he looked up at An Xin Ya. This was the first time he had seen her so closely; she had a sweet smile on her lips. Although she hadn't slept well last night and looked a bit pale, her skin was flawless, fair as jade, with beautiful and watery eyes and rosy lips. He couldn't help but marvel at her beauty, like that of a fairy. Her breath brushed against his face, causing his heart to flutter slightly.
He swallowed hard, gazing at her lips, wishing he could kiss her.
"Brother Shouya, what's wrong?" An Xin Ya seemed to sense something and suddenly asked.
"Ah, nothing." Shouya quickly snapped back to reality, feeling a bit flustered. He sat back in the driver's seat and glanced at An Xin Ya again, his expression awkward. If she had seen him in that moment, thinking such thoughts about her, it would have been so embarrassing!
He started the car, which drove smoothly along the road.
"I originally wanted to make some soup to bring to the hospital for my grandmother, but I..." An Xin Ya said with a dim voice full of helplessness.
Due to her vision issues, she couldn't manage such tasks. Besides, last time when her grandmother was out for an errand, she tried cooking alone in the kitchen and ended up making a mess while injuring herself. When her grandmother returned, she was scolded for it. Every time her grandmother went out, she would remind her not to step into the kitchen.
Shouya glanced at An Xin Ya, noticing the worry etched on her face tugging at his heartstrings.
"Don't worry, before I came, I already called a hotel to order a bowl of fresh soup." Shouya had prepared in advance, knowing that her eyes were not convenient, and had thought of everything for her.
"Really?" An Xin Ya's face immediately lit up upon hearing Brother Shouya's words. She turned her face, her hollow yet beautiful eyes staring straight ahead, then said, "Brother Shouya, you really are too much trouble!"
"It's no trouble at all." Shouya glanced at An Xin Ya, who was smiling brightly, and couldn't help but curve his lips into a faint smile. As long as she was happy, he was willing to do anything for her.
When did he start having such thoughts? Shouya didn't know; perhaps it was from the moment he heard her play her first piece! At that time, he was deeply captivated by her music and enchanted by her sweet and pure appearance.
Arriving at the hotel, Shouya quickly walked inside. The hotel had already packed the soup he ordered. He paid for it and took the soup out, placing it on the back seat.
An Xin Ya caught a whiff of the soup's aroma and smiled slightly, saying, "Brother Shouya, is this the Yam and Duck Soup?"
"Yes, I didn't expect your nose to be so sharp!" Shouya praised.
Upon reaching the hospital, Shouya supported An Xin Ya with one hand while holding the soup with the other as they made their way to Grandma An's ward.
Grandma An was lying in bed while doctors and nurses were conducting various checks on her. Upon seeing Shouya and An Xin Ya arrive, the attending physician in a white coat smiled and nodded at them before stepping out with a report.
"Grandma!" An Xin Ya heard the commotion, broke free from Shouya's hand, and hurriedly reached forward, collapsing beside the bed and grasping Grandma An's hand while tremblingly calling out.
"Xinya, you're here!" Grandma An felt immense joy seeing her granddaughter arrive. A smile spread across her face; the doctor had just informed her about her condition. No wonder she had been feeling discomfort in her stomach recently. At first, she hadn't paid much attention and just bought some painkillers from the pharmacy but didn't expect it to be so serious, causing her granddaughter to worry about her.
"Grandma, you scared me to death yesterday. I was so scared..." An Xin Ya widened her eyes, gripping Grandma An's hand tightly as she spoke fearfully.
"Hello, Grandma An!" Shouya placed the soup on the table and smiled as he greeted Grandma An.
Grandma An tilted her face, looking at Shouya with surprise and confusion, and asked, "He..."
"Grandma, let me introduce him. This is Brother Shouya, my friend. He drove you to the hospital. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't know what to do!" An Xin Ya stood up, grabbing Brother Shouya's arm to introduce him to Grandma An.
Hearing her granddaughter say this, Grandma An felt very touched. She wanted to sit up, but due to the surgery she had yesterday, her wound hadn't healed yet, and every movement felt like it was tearing.
Shouya quickly stepped forward to help Grandma An sit up and placed a pillow behind her back.
Tears welled up in Grandma An's eyes as she looked at Shouya and said gratefully, "Thank you so much! If it weren't for you, I might not have survived this!"
She glanced at An Xin Ya, wondering what would happen to Xinya if she went. Who would take care of Xinya? Thinking of this made her heart ache suddenly, and she felt like crying.
"Grandma An, please don't say that. It's what I should do," Shouya said with a gentle smile on his face and a warm tone.
Grandma An raised her eyes, looking at Shouya with admiration. Not only was he handsome, but he was also kind-hearted and caring, plus he was a friend of An Xin Ya.
"By the way, there's old duck soup here. Let me get you a bowl!" Shouya seemed to remember something and turned to serve a bowl of soup.
Grandma An accepted the soup that Shouya had served for her and smiled as she said "thank you." She then saw him serve a bowl of soup for Xinya as well, placing it in her hands while reminding her to be careful as it was hot and to drink slowly! The old lady noticed all these thoughtful gestures from him, showing how considerate he was towards others.
