"You and Shouya, when are you getting married? Give me some grandchildren to hold..." Grandma An looked at Xinya and Shouya, grinning widely. This was something she eagerly anticipated.
"Grandma, what are you talking about?!" An Xin Ya blushed, her cheeks turning a light shade of red as she shyly exclaimed, asking her grandmother not to speak nonsense. She and Brother Shouya hadn't even started dating yet.
Seeing her flushed face, Grandma An felt delighted inside, knowing that Xinya had feelings for Shouya but was too shy to admit it. She glanced at Shouya, aware that he openly liked her granddaughter Xinya and had no qualms about expressing it.
"Grandma, let's not discuss my marriage with Xinya for now; we can talk about it later!" Shouya suddenly said.
Grandma An furrowed her brows and asked in confusion, "Why? Don't you like my Xinya?"
"Right now, I just want to heal Xinya's eyes. Once she regains her sight, I can propose to her then!" Shouya gazed affectionately at An Xin Ya, who was already blushing deeply, her face red all the way to her ears.
"Alright, alright!" Grandma An's frown slowly relaxed as she spoke with both excitement and emotion. She looked at Xinya and longed for the day when her bright and beautiful eyes would be restored.
"I hope you can let me take Xinya to New York for treatment," Shouya said seriously while looking at Grandma An.
Only in New York could they address the significant damage to her eyes. Many tissues had gradually deteriorated. A thorough examination and analysis there would provide clarity before they could proceed with surgery...
"Why do you need to take Xinya to New York? She lost her parents when she was young and has been raised by me ever since. She has never left my side. How can I agree to let you take her so far away?" Grandma An was puzzled; there were reputable hospitals nearby that could treat her granddaughter without needing to go all the way to New York.
Not only was Grandma An confused, but even An Xin Ya felt bewildered. Why did she have to go to New York? Leaving Grandma for an unfamiliar place would make her anxious and lost.
"Grandma, I understand your concerns, but please rest assured that I will take good care of Xinya," Shouya said sincerely as he looked into Grandma An's eyes, hoping she would agree to let him take Xinya.
Grandma An furrowed her brow tightly as she looked at Shouya and then at Xinya. She hesitated and finally said, "Can I think about it?"
"That's fine, but I hope you can give me an answer soon. We can't delay any longer regarding Xinya's eyes," Shouya reminded her. He knew that bringing this up unexpectedly would be hard for them to accept right away, so he wanted them to have some time to consider it and prepare themselves mentally.
He glanced at An Xin Ya sitting beside him, noticing her worried expression and furrowed brows. He felt a surge of concern for her and reached out to hold her hand, offering her strength and warmth.
That night, Grandma An knocked on Xinya's door. When she received no response, she pushed the door open and found Xinya lost in thought in her room, clearly reflecting on what Shouya had said earlier that day.
Not only was Xinya thinking, but after much contemplation, she decided to come in and have a good talk with Xinya.
"Grandma..." An Xin Ya came back to her senses, hearing the familiar footsteps and the familiar scent that belonged to her grandmother. She smiled lightly.
Grandma An sat in a chair facing Xinya, observing her with a serious expression. She couldn't help but let out a deep sigh in her heart, reaching out to hold her hand and saying, "Xinya, you should go to New York with Shouya!"
"Grandma, I..." Upon hearing her grandmother say this, An Xin Ya hesitated. It wasn't that she didn't want to go to New York with Brother Shouya, but she couldn't bear to leave her grandmother alone in the small town. What if something happened to her grandmother? She wouldn't know.
"I know you're worried about me being home alone and afraid that something might happen. But Grandma is old enough to take care of herself, so you can rest assured and go to New York. Even if there are any issues, I can ask our neighbors for help..." Grandma An looked at her granddaughter Xinya with loving eyes, patting the back of her hand.
An Xin Ya remained silent, unsure of what to say.
"You should go to New York with Shouya. Perhaps he really has a way to heal your eye injury and restore your sight. Then you will be able to see Grandma again, as well as everyone else and everything... Don't you want that?" Grandma An asked her softly.
Shouya had said something similar to her. With her large, hollow yet beautiful eyes fixed straight ahead, she seriously told her grandmother, "I want to see this world more than anyone!"
"Then go to New York! Don't overthink it; Grandma will take care of herself. My only hope is that you can regain your sight and fulfill this wish for me." Grandma An gently stroked An Xin Ya's face. Decades had passed in a flash; she had lost so much, but she could not lose her only granddaughter.
"Grandma..." An Xin Ya could no longer control her emotions; tears welled up in her eyes and fell down her cheeks as she cried, "I will."
With tears in her own eyes, Grandma An stood up and embraced An Xin Ya, gently stroking her head.
"Grandma, what if I go to New York for treatment and nothing changes..."
Before she could finish speaking, Grandma An interrupted hastily, "Nonsense! Don't you believe in Shouya's medical skills? Why do you think he keeps running around for you? Isn't it because he hopes you will regain your sight soon? No matter what happens, you cannot let down his sincere intentions! And how can you hurt Grandma's feelings like this or disappoint me..."
Grandma An looked at Xinya quietly, knowing she was afraid inside. She held tightly onto her hand and spoke somewhat incoherently.
That night, Grandma An stayed in An Xin Ya's room for a long time, talking with her and comforting her. When it was past ten o'clock, Grandma An said she needed to go back to her room to rest. However, An Xin Ya grabbed her hand and said, "Grandma, can you stay with me tonight? I haven't slept with you for a long time."
When she was six years old and just adopted by the Foster Parents, she wasn't used to sleeping alone. It was Grandma who slept beside her, telling stories until she fell asleep.
"Mm, okay!" Grandma An climbed onto the bed, hugged her, gently patting her back and smiling at her, as if she had returned to six years ago.
"Grandma, can you tell me a story? I haven't heard you tell a story in a long time." An Xin Ya reminisced about the happy moments of cuddling with her grandmother in her childhood.
"Alright, Grandma will tell you a story about 'Sleeping Beauty in the Woods.' Once upon a time, a queen gave birth to a princess, and the king invited all the fairies in the kingdom to bless the princess. The fairies bestowed the most beautiful gifts upon her: beauty, wisdom..."
A beam of soft sunlight streamed through the small window, waking An Xin Ya. She reached out beside her but didn't find her grandmother; she must have woken up early and was busy in the kitchen.
An Xin Ya sat up, got out of bed, and walked to the window to feel the sunlight. It was already late autumn, and winter was approaching. People often said that autumn was a season of longing.
She missed her adoptive mother in heaven even more, as well as her past friends, and so many others...
Shouya drove to An Xin Ya's house as usual. He seemed to have become a regular visitor, and Grandma An treated him like family.
Today he came to find out what Grandma An and An Xin Ya were thinking. They must have talked last night! He hoped to get their response because the report he sent to New York had yielded results. There were authoritative doctors and research technicians there, along with experimental centers that would benefit An Xin Ya's eye treatment and help restore her vision.
Knock knock...
The knocking sound came again. Grandma An, busy in the kitchen, heard it and quickly wiped her hands on her apron as she walked to open the door. When she saw Shouya, her face lit up with a smile.
As soon as Shouya entered, he asked where Xinya was!
Grandma An knew he was concerned about Xinya and told him that she was in her room but didn't know if she was awake yet.
Shouya walked directly to her room door, raised his hand, and gently knocked on it, saying softly, "Xinya..."
Sitting at her vanity table, An Xin Ya heard Brother Shouya's voice. Her eyes brightened with excitement as she got up and felt along the wall to open the door. A faint scent of jasmine wafted through: "Brother Shouya, why did you come so early today?"
An Xin Ya understood why he came so early; he wanted to know their response. She felt inexplicably touched by how much he cared for her; aside from her grandmother, no one else was this concerned about her.
"I came to see you..." Shouya looked at An Xin Ya with gentle eyes, noticing that she probably had just gotten out of bed.
"Have you had breakfast yet, Shouya?" came the voice of Grandma An from the kitchen.
"Oh, not yet!" Shouya replied loudly to Grandma An. He had come in a hurry and hadn't eaten much for breakfast; besides, he never had the habit of eating breakfast before. However, now that he frequently visited An Xin Ya's house, he could enjoy the breakfast and delicious meals prepared by Grandma An.
Grandma An walked out of the kitchen holding a tray with three bowls of freshly made pig liver soup noodles, garnished with cilantro and some chopped green onions. The aroma wafted through the air, making one's mouth water.
She placed the tray on the table and turned to see An Xin Ya still standing at the door. "Xinya, what are you doing standing there? Hurry up and wash your face and brush your teeth!"
"Yes, Grandma." An Xin Ya felt her way along the wall as she walked into the bathroom.
Seeing that she was having difficulty, Shouya reached out to support her. "Let me help you in!"
An Xin Ya was taken aback for a moment but did not refuse. She nodded and allowed Shouya to assist her into the bathroom.
Shouya then asked her which toothbrush was hers, helped her squeeze toothpaste onto it, and even filled a cup with water for her.
"Thank you, Brother Shouya." She took in all these little details, remembering them in her heart, and thought that she would repay him well when she had the chance.
"You're welcome." Shouya smiled at her. To him, these small gestures were nothing to be thanked for; his main focus was to take her to New York for treatment for her eyes.
He glanced at An Xin Ya once more before stepping out of the bathroom and into the living room.
