"Yes, her name is An Xin Ya," Shouya said, turning to An Xin Ya. "This is a member of our medical team, named Jagana George Wells."
"Hello, Miss Shinya, please call me Jagana!" Jagana politely said, looking at the beautiful lady in front of him.
"Hello, Mr. Jagana," An Xin Ya replied with a slight smile.
An Xin Ya remained silent, quietly listening as Shouya and Jagana exchanged pleasantries. Then, with Shouya's assistance, they walked into their Medical and Experimental Center together.
Listening to their discussion about medical matters, An Xin Ya found it hard to understand what they were talking about due to the many technical terms involved.
Upon entering Jagana's office, Jagana sat down in a chair.
Shouya helped An Xin Ya sit down and turned to ask Jagana if he had reviewed the report he sent someone to deliver. Jagana confirmed that he had looked over the report and the slides. He noted that An Xin Ya's eye injury was indeed a complicated matter since many structures in her eye were damaged and pressing on the optic nerve.
Sitting quietly, An Xin Ya listened to every word Jagana said. It was similar to what she had heard before at the hospital in Las Vegas. She truly wanted to know if her eye injury could be treated.
"What is the success rate if surgery is performed?" Shouya asked directly.
"This requires further examination," Jagana replied. Although the report was sent from Las Vegas, as doctors, they needed to be cautious and responsible for every patient.
Shouya turned to look at An Xin Ya; her complexion seemed a bit off. He sat beside her, held her hand, and told her not to be afraid.
Jagana observed how concerned Shouya was for her and how he personally brought her to New York for surgery. It seemed their relationship was quite special. Jagana took out An Xin Ya's report from his drawer and suggested that Shouya take An Xin Ya for another examination.
Shouya returned to his office, took off his coat, and put on a white lab coat. This time he would focus on treating An Xin Ya's eye injury; no matter what, he would do his utmost to ensure her injury was healed.
An Xin Ya felt very nervous and scared but still followed Shouya for various eye examinations. The results were the same as those from Las Vegas: the success rate of the surgery was only twenty percent.
Shouya gathered all medical personnel in the conference room to discuss An Xin Ya's eye surgery.
An Xin Ya sat quietly alone in the office, holding a cup in her hands, feeling sweat trickle from her palms.
The door of the conference room opened, and all the doctors came out. They unanimously agreed to proceed with surgery on An Xin Ya, which would take place tomorrow since there were still some issues that needed further discussion.
Shouya returned to the office and approached An Xin Ya, who was sitting in a chair. He squatted down beside her, held her hand, and said, "The surgery will take place tomorrow!"
"I’m scared, Brother Shouya!" An Xin Ya said, her face pale and filled with panic. For a moment, she thought about giving up on the surgery.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here," Shouya reassured her.
Jagana passed by Shouya's office, knocked on the door, and called him out.
Shouya stood up, patted An Xin Ya on the shoulder, and then walked out. They discussed An Xin Ya's eye injury issue once again.
While discussing with Jagana, Shouya occasionally turned back to look at An Xin Ya sitting in the office.
After about ten minutes, once he finished his discussion with Jagana, Shouya returned to the office and said to Xinya, "Xinya, you will be staying in the hospital today."
Hearing this sensitive remark, An Xin Ya's heart skipped a beat, but she didn't say anything. After all, being here meant she had to listen to Brother Shouya.
The nurse took her to change into a white hospital gown. With the nurse's assistance, she walked into a spacious, bright, elegant, warm, and comfortable ward that was equipped with a color TV, refrigerator, air conditioning, and other necessary furniture.
At that moment, Shouya also walked in. The nurse gave her a slight bow and left them alone in the ward.
An Xin Ya sat on the hospital bed, her hand stroking the soft mattress. There seemed to be no pungent smell of medicine or disinfectant here.
Shouya approached her and said, "Xinya, tomorrow's surgery will take place in the morning."
Her previously calm emotions surged again; An Xin Ya was taken aback. She hadn't expected it to happen so soon, leaving her a bit unprepared.
"Brother Shouya, after tomorrow's surgery, will I be able to see again?"
"After the surgery, you will still need bandages. It will take about a week before they can be removed," Shouya informed her.
"Oh!" An Xin Ya realized it wouldn't be that quick; she would have to wait through a long seven days and nights before she could see again.
That night, An Xin Ya stayed in the hospital. She hardly slept at all throughout the night while Shouya stayed by her side to ease her anxiety.
Originally, Shouya was responsible for An Xin Ya's surgery. However, since he hadn't slept at all last night and had been with An Xin Ya until around three or four in the morning when he finally dozed off.
Jagana noticed his weary expression and frowned. After putting on the sterilized gown, she walked up to Shouya and placed a hand on his shoulder, saying, "You can't go into the operating room looking like this. Let me handle it."
"I..." Shouya wanted to perform the surgery himself, but he truly felt exhausted.
Looking at him, Jagana said, "The success rate of this surgery is only twenty percent, and after this operation... I hope you're prepared for that."
"I understand," Shouya replied quietly, lowering his head.
Jagana patted his shoulder without saying anything more and put on her mask before stepping out. Shouya followed her outside, watching as An Xin Ya was wheeled into the operating room by doctors and nurses.
He anxiously paced outside the surgery room for nearly five hours. The long wait felt like endless torment.
When the red light in the operating room turned off, Shouya saw Jagana and the other lead surgeons coming out. He rushed forward, eyes wide with concern, and asked Jagana, "How did it go?"
"The surgery went quite smoothly!" Jagana said with a smile as she removed her mask.
The weight that had been hanging over Shouya slowly lifted, and he smiled back. He saw Xinya being wheeled out by nurses, her eyes covered with white bandages.
Shouya stayed by An Xin Ya's side in the hospital, holding her hand tightly. The bandages would be removed in a week, but that week felt incredibly long and torturous.
Lying on the hospital bed with her eyes covered in white gauze, An Xin Ya found herself in darkness once again, just like when she was blind before. She timidly asked Shouya, "Brother Shouya, do you really think I will be able to see again in a week?"
"Dr. Jagana said the surgery was very successful! Jagana is a renowned doctor with exceptional skills. I believe he will heal your eyes and restore your sight," Shouya reassured her. He had hired Jagana at great expense and trusted in her expertise.
"Brother Shouya, really? I can actually see again?!" Hearing his words filled An Xin Ya with excitement. She longed to see everything again, to see her grandmother, and to see everyone... This was something she had hoped for so long, and now it seemed within reach.
"Yes!" Shouya felt just as excited as Xinya. He held her hand tightly and kissed it deeply, pressing it against his face as he looked at her affectionately.
During that week, for seven days and nights, Shouya stayed almost constantly by An Xin Ya's side. He fed her during meals and wiped her mouth; he kept her company while she slept. Since this was a high-end medical research center, the room where An Xin Ya stayed was spacious and bright, elegant and comfortable, equipped with all necessary furniture. There were usually more than two beds in a room; he could sleep on another bed while keeping an eye on her needs so he could assist her immediately.
A week can feel neither long nor short; for those waiting, it often feels prolonged and difficult to endure. Finally, that day arrived—the day to remove the bandages.
Jagana, Shouya, and the other doctors all watched nervously as two nurses prepared to remove the bandages from An Xin Ya.
At this moment, An Xin Ya's heart was equally tense, anxious, and even fearful. The layers of cloth had been removed, and she had finished unwrapping them. Her eyes were tightly closed. She heard Dr. Jiegana's voice beside her: "Miss Shinya, slowly open your eyes, take your time..."
Shouya stood next to her, quietly watching her, encouraging her to take it slow and not to be nervous.
"It might be a bit dazzling and uncomfortable at first, just take your time, and it will be fine..." Jagana instructed her from the side.
Listening to Dr. Jiegana's words, An Xin Ya slowly began to open her eyes little by little, but everything in front of her was still dark. She closed her eyes again and opened them once more, yet it remained pitch black. Panic and fear surged within her as she cried out in confusion: "Why? Why is it still dark in front of me? Why can't I see anything? Brother Shouya, didn't you say that after removing the cloth, I would be able to see? Why can't I see anything now?"
An Xin Ya broke down completely, tears streaming down her face as she frantically grasped Shouya's hand, repeatedly asking.
"Xinya, calm down!" Shouya said with a furrowed brow, holding the emotionally overwhelmed An Xin Ya who was in tears.
"How can you tell me to calm down..." An Xin Ya cried heartbreakingly. She had thought about the possibility of such an outcome and had prepared herself mentally for it, but when faced with this reality, she truly could not accept it. She completely could not come to terms with this fact.
Seeing An Xin Ya lose control of her emotions, Jagana immediately called for a nurse to give her a sedative.
After receiving the sedative, An Xin Ya quieted down completely and became motionless. Shouya picked her up and placed her on the hospital bed, his eyes filled with tears as he looked at An Xin Ya who was staring blankly with her eyes open. His heart felt like it was being torn apart.
All the doctors, including Jagana, left the ward. Shouya followed them out and furrowed his brows in confusion as he asked Jagana: "What exactly is going on? Didn't you tell me the surgery was very successful? Why can't she still see?"
His emotions were also somewhat out of control; however, as a doctor, he understood that postoperative failures were common. He knew how to control his emotions, but when it happened to An Xin Ya, the woman he loved dearly, he truly could not accept this reality.
